COMUNE DI BONEFRO Provincia di Campobasso Regione Molise BONEFRO e il suo patrimonio storico, architettonico, culturale e paesaggistico INTRODUZIONE / INTRODUCTIONE La tradizione popolare fa risalire alla leggenda del “ratto delle venefrane” le origini del primo insediamento di Bonefro. Documenti storici, attestano l'esistenza di un castello di Binifro o Benifro nell'XI secolo. Un diploma del 1049 riporta la notizia della donazione del monastero di Sant’Eustachio, fatta da un conte dei principi longobardi di nome Adelferio, al monastero di Montecassino. La presenza del castello nel 1049 permette di ipotizzare, con una certa sicurezza, la nascita di un nucleo abitativo nel periodo longobardo. La storia successiva, dalla dominazione borbonica agli anni successivi all'unità d'Italia, è stata segnata da vicende comuni a tutto il meridione come rivolte e brigantaggio, provocando numerosi episodi di violenza e di repressione da parte della guardia nazionale. Popular tradition goes back to the legend of the "rape of the venefrane" the origins of the first settlement of Bonefro. Historical documents attest the existence of a castle of Binifro or Benifro in the 11th century. IL PAESE / THE HAMLET Bonefro, mt 631 s.l.m., dalla caratteristica forma urbana a terrazza, è incuneato fra i colli “Verzelli” (841mt) e “Totaro” (879 mt). Nel contesto urbanistico e artistico dell'abitato assunsero rilevante importanza il Castello e la chiesa di Santa Maria delle Rose, costruiti sulla parte alta di uno sperone roccioso, nella zona comunemente detta Terravecchia. Qui sono conservate quattro porte, vestigia del periodo feudale, quando l'abitato era circondato dalle mura : “Porta Molino”, “Porta Piè la Terra”, “Porta Fontana”. Nel corso dei secoli il paese si sviluppò nei luoghi detti "Il Piano", "Il Monte" e "Le Lame". Nel 1700 la parte vecchia e la parte nuova del paese furono unite dalla "Piazza" ricavata nell'area del piano con la realizzazione di una quarta porta, “Porta Nuova”. Con la costruzione del Monastero nel 1716, Bonefro raggiunge la sua struttura base definitiva. IL CASTELLO / THE CASTLE Non è noto il periodo della sua costruzione, ma si può affermare che i primi feudatari di Bonefro possedevano sicuramente una costruzione fortificata sin dai tempi dei longobardi: un documento del 1049 parla, infatti, del “Castello de ipso binifro”; un diploma nel quale Adelferio, conte dei principi longobardi di Benevento, dona il Monastero di Sant'Eustachio a quello di Montecassino. Probabilmente si può affermare che l'attuale Castello fu riedificato e ampliato, sopra il precedente edificio, nel periodo normanno e aragonese. Attualmente il castello, a pianta quadrata, presenta quattro torri. Esisteva una quinta torre, probabilmente risalente al periodo svevo data la sua struttura, che andò distrutta verso il 1888. Da fortezza è stato trasformato in palazzo baronale intorno al 1400. CHIESA DI SANTA MARIA DELLE ROSE CHURH OF SANTA MARIA DELLE ROSE La chiesa madre, sotto il titolo di Santa Maria delle Rose, sorge nel centro storico di Bonefro, nelle immediate vicinanze del castello. La chiesa ha subito nel corso del tempo molti rifacimenti che hanno mascherato il disegno originale: tuttavia sono ancora visibili alcuni elementi della fabbrica (la mole, il peso e il volume della struttura) che mostrano che essa fu edificata nel periodo romanico, probabilmente nel XIII secolo. The mother church, under the title of Santa Maria delle Rose is located in the historic heart of Bonefro, near the Castle. The Church has undergone over time many remakes which have masked the original drawing, but you can still see some elements of the factory (the mole, the weight and volume of the structure) which show that it was built in the Romanesque period, probably in the 13th century. Attaccato alla chiesa troviamo il campanile di forma quadrangolare, formato da quattro ordini sovrapposti. Il campanile subì la mutilazione della guglia nel 1963 e al suo posto venne costruita una ringhiera in ferro battuto. In origine la torre campanaria era una struttura a sé stante, ma venne inglobata nella pianta della chiesa nel corso della restaurazione del 1700. Attached to the Church is the Bell Tower of quadrangular shape, formed by four overlapping orders. The campanile underwent the mutilation of the Spire in 1963 and in its place was built a wrought iron railing. Originally the belfry was a facility of its own, but was incorporated into the plan of the Church during the restoration of 1700. Internamente la chiesa ha un aspetto settecentesco in conseguenza della restaurazione, secondo il gusto barocco, avvenuta nel 1728 per volontà di Mons. Giovanni Andrea Tria. La chiesa ad andamento longitudinale è suddivisa in tre navate con presbiterio rialzato di un gradino. Un arco trionfale immette nella zona presbiteriale ove troviamo un pregevole altare maggiore in marmi bianchi e policromi con intarsi, bassorilievi e altorilievi, realizzato da Antonio di Lucca, uno dei più importanti maestri marmorari del regno di Napoli. Nel corso dei lavori di restauro degli anni '60 ci fu un importante ritrovamento: venne alla luce la porta di accesso alla stanza situata sotto il coro, che era l'antico cimitero dei sacerdoti, si accedeva tramite una botola esistente dietro l'altare maggiore, richiusa nel 1925.
