He was born at Lauterbach near Oelsnitz, Kingdom of Saxony, and died at Rätz, Saxony. Franz Delitzsch (Leipzig, February 23, 1813 – Leipzig, March 4, 1890) was a German Lutheran theologian and Hebraist. Born in Leipzig, he held the professorship of theology at the University of Rostock from 1846 to 1850, at the University of Erlangen until 1867, and after that at the University of Leipzig until his death. Delitzsch wrote many commentaries on books of the Bible, Jewish antiquities, biblical psychology, a history of Jewish poetry, and Christian apologetics. As an extremely tactful queen, Queen of Sheba could shun any risky confrontation that eventually might lead to war against King Solomon at that time. This study is intended to show to what extent such a prudent queen could lead her sovereignty to safety and thriving. By avoiding being obsessed with declaring war against King Solomon, Queen of Sheba attained many privileges that belong to both her personality and her subjects.     Studies in the Life of Solomon ∙ Lesson 1 ∙ Text: 1 Kings 1; 2 Chronicles Introduction: There are many reasons one could give for choosing to study the life of Solomon. I began with the thought of using this study as a follow-up to our study, The Life of King David. Secondly, we have always greatly benefited from our studies of biblical characters (Daniel, Esther, Ruth, Elijah to name some). But perhaps what drew me most to Solomon was my reading of a study by Dr. Philip Graham Ryken on the life of Solomon, which we will use to guide us in our study along with Tyndale’s Cornerstone Biblical Commentary by William Barnes, The Expositors Bible Commentary by R. D. Patterson, and Focus on the Bible series by Dr. Dale Ralph Davis. It should be noted that we will not be studying the entire book of 1 Kings, only the life of Solomon, which is covered in the first 11 chapters of 1 Kings. It should also be noted that the book of 2 Chronicles will be used as an additional source for our study as it provides insights not provided by the writers of 1 Kings. One final note, by William Barnes regarding the authorship of 1 Kings: “As is the case with many of the books of the Old Testament, the author (or authors) of the books of 1-2 Kings is unknown. The title “Kings” clearly has to do with the content of Kings, not with the identity of the author. This is also the case, for example, with 1-2 Samuel, in which Samuel the prophet himself is last mentioned in 1 Samuel 28, when he was already dead and called up from the grave!.

    King Solomon and the Divided Monarchy The Books of Kings Like First and Second Samuel, First and Second Kings were originally one work that was divided into two when it was translated into Greek in ancient times. Since they form a unit, this introduction will discuss both books as one. The Books of Samuel concern the creation of the monarchy and its early growth. In the Books of Kings, monarchy is an established fact, but the narrative continues to question its value. The narrative presents the history of the monarchy until the destruction of the northern kingdom in 701 BC and of the southern kingdom and Jerusalem in 587 BC. First and Second Kings include many different literary forms, such as prophetic stories, battle narratives, and short notices concerning royal achievements. Some of this material was evidently drawn from sources now lost to us but mentioned in the text: “the book of the chronicles of Solomon” (1 Kings 11:41), “the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel” (1 Kings 14:19), and “the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah” (1 Kings 14:29). The prophetic stories and other narratives may derive from oral tradition or now unknown written sources. The narrative structure is episodic; the many brief stories have no obvious relationship to one another. Consequently, many readers think of First and Second Kings as a loosely edited collection of various narratives. However, the attentive reader will find many patterns that hold the diverse narratives together and indicate the care with which the whole was compiled.

While Solomon's wisdom is generally perceived as being focused on his parables and poetry (I Kgs. 5:12) or his insights into human nature (I Kgs. 3:28), his political and economic acumen is often overlooked. The rapid ex- pansion of Israel's commerce, trade and industry during his reign was due to a number of reasons, foremost being the political. Either by treaties of friend- ship or subjugation, David had extended the sphere of Israel's influence so that by the time Solomon succeeded to the throne the nation possessed a vast potential for expanding trade and the inflow of tribute. Displaying political and administrative wisdom, Solomon proved equal to taking full advantage of the unparalleled opportunity for economic growth and development. Still another reason was the freedom from armed conflict during Solomon's reign, 1 a rare phenomenon in antiquity. For the first time in Jewish history, international commercial ties were es- tablished and developed to a very advanced degree. Roads were built to meet the new needs of world trade as well as a merchant fleet. Natural resources in mines and stone quarries were exploited and put to use. Foreign trade also brought about a significant change in Israel's domestic economy. From that time onward there emerged a professional merchant class engaged not only in negotiating trade agreements with foreign states, but also in procuring foreign goods for the home market and selling domestic products abroad.

The Qur’anic Epic in Iranian Cinema Abstract The er presentation of religious figures in Islam has become particularly controversial in recent years. The creation of religious films has, therefore, turned into a highly sensitive undertaking. Iranian cinema is one of the very few in the Muslim world to have employed this new medium in imagining and narrating stories of revered religious figures. In this article I examine the complex socio-political context of Iran to study the relatively late emergence of the epic genre in Iranian cinema. I then study the recent creation and development of ‘Qur’anic Films’ within Iranian cinema with specific efer rence to Kingdom of Solomon (Mulk-i Sulayman-i Nabi, Shahriar Bahrani, 2010), which I argue is the first Qur’anic epic in Iranian cinema if not in the Muslim world. The ra ticle also draws from the Iranian television series Imam Ali (Davud Mirbaqeri, 1997) in examining the ways in which Iranian filmmakers negotiate the balance between religious authenticity and dramatic effectiveness.
