Background Information Prof. L.R. Brown and Mr. C. L. Cook were appointed by Royal HaskoningDHV (previously SSI) to undertake a preliminary ecological assessment for the scoping phase of the proposed EIA for the P-166 road from the north of White River to the south of Mbombela. Four alternatives alignments were proposed for the new P1-66 road linkage. It must be stressed that no comprehensive vegetation or faunal surveys have been undertaken due to severe financial and time constraints as well as access on privately owned properties; but merely a brief assessment of the current ecological status of the proposed road alignments. By surveying the proposed road alignment as well as immediate areas adjacent to the proposed alignment for specialised habitats, as well as the remaining vegetation and specific habitats, one can make an assumption of the possible presence or absence of threatened plant and animal species. An initial site visitation of the proposed alignment was conducted on the 20-21st October 2012. The survey was supplemented by literature investigations; personal records, historic data and previous surveys conducted in the White River-Mbombela areas (2000-2012) as well as in similar habitats. -
Species Accounts
Species accounts The list of species that follows is a synthesis of all the botanical knowledge currently available on the Nyika Plateau flora. It does not claim to be the final word in taxonomic opinion for every plant group, but will provide a sound basis for future work by botanists, phytogeographers, and reserve managers. It should also serve as a comprehensive plant guide for interested visitors to the two Nyika National Parks. By far the largest body of information was obtained from the following nine publications: • Flora zambesiaca (current ed. G. Pope, 1960 to present) • Flora of Tropical East Africa (current ed. H. Beentje, 1952 to present) • Plants collected by the Vernay Nyasaland Expedition of 1946 (Brenan & collaborators 1953, 1954) • Wye College 1972 Malawi Project Final Report (Brummitt 1973) • Resource inventory and management plan for the Nyika National Park (Mill 1979) • The forest vegetation of the Nyika Plateau: ecological and phenological studies (Dowsett-Lemaire 1985) • Biosearch Nyika Expedition 1997 report (Patel 1999) • Biosearch Nyika Expedition 2001 report (Patel & Overton 2002) • Evergreen forest flora of Malawi (White, Dowsett-Lemaire & Chapman 2001) We also consulted numerous papers dealing with specific families or genera and, finally, included the collections made during the SABONET Nyika Expedition. In addition, botanists from K and PRE provided valuable input in particular plant groups. Much of the descriptive material is taken directly from one or more of the works listed above, including information regarding habitat and distribution. A single illustration accompanies each genus; two illustrations are sometimes included in large genera with a wide morphological variance (for example, Lobelia). -

Box FM730, Famona, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe Vegetation Survey of Mt Gorongosa, page 2 SUMMARY Mount Gorongosa is a large inselberg almost 700 sq. km in extent in central Mozambique. With a vertical relief of between 900 and 1400 m above the surrounding plain, the highest point is at 1863 m. The mountain consists of a Lower Zone (mainly below 1100 m altitude) containing settlements and over which the natural vegetation cover has been strongly modified by people, and an Upper Zone in which much of the natural vegetation is still well preserved. Both zones are very important to the hydrology of surrounding areas. Immediately adjacent to the mountain lies Gorongosa National Park, one of Mozambique's main conservation areas. A key issue in recent years has been whether and how to incorporate the upper parts of Mount Gorongosa above 700 m altitude into the existing National Park, which is primarily lowland. [These areas were eventually incorporated into the National Park in 2010.] In recent years the unique biodiversity and scenic beauty of Mount Gorongosa have come under severe threat from the destruction of natural vegetation. This is particularly acute as regards moist evergreen forest, the loss of which has accelerated to alarming proportions. -

Author for correspondence: Ben-Erik van Wyk, [email protected] Abstract Phylogenetic analyses of the cpDNA trnQ-trnK 5′ exon region for 27 genera and 42 species of Saniculoideae and early diverging lineages of Apioideae were carried out to assess or confirm the tribal placements of the following anomalous genera: Annesorhiza, Astydamia, Chamarea, Choritaenia, Ezosciadium, Itasina, Lichtensteinia, Marlothiella, Molopospermum and Phlyctidocarpa. To accommodate these unique early diverging members of the Apiaceae and to reflect their relationships, a new tribal classification system has become necessary. Many of the early diverging genera (herein referred to as the pro- toapioids) can readily be distinguished from the euapioids (the remaining apioids) by the presence of scattered druse crystals in the mesocarp. The major morphological discontinuity within the family, however, lies between the combined protoapioids and euapioids (representing an expanded Apioideae s.l., including the Saniculoideae) and the subfamilies Azorelloideae and Mackinlayoideae. -

PO Box 148, Sunninghill, 2197 25 July 2007 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The objectives of this study were to provide an assessment of potential impacts on flora, fauna and ecology by the proposed powerline infrastructure. This report comprises the ecological assessment of the study area for the Scoping study and serves to assist in assessing potential impacts of the proposed routes and thus assist in selecting a preferred route for the 50 km 400kV powerline. The proposed project contains a number of route alternatives. These include two main route alternatives, the Western alternative and Eastern alternative, as well as some localised alternative routes, the Southern sub-alternative, the R555 sub- alternative and the Northern sub-alternative. There is also the Turn-in line in the south of the study area and the substation. A literature survey was undertaken to describe broad vegetation patterns and compile a preliminary plant community map of the study area. This preliminary map was ground-truthed during a brief field visit from 25-27 June 2007. The published studies also provided an indication of species composition, diversity and the presence of plant species of special concern within different plant communities. The general status of the vegetation was derived by updating the National Landcover data layer for the study area. A list of Red Data flora species which could potentially occur within the study area was compiled on the basis of existing data (from SANBI) as well as from literature sources. -

Svensson, and Peter John Taylor Abstract Scientific investigations on the mammals of Angola started over 150 years ago, but information remains scarce and scattered, with only one recent published account. Here we provide a synthesis of the mammals of Angola based on a thorough survey of primary and grey literature, as well as recent unpublished records. We present a short history of mammal research, and provide brief information on each species known to occur in the country. Particular attention is given to endemic and near endemic species. We also provide a zoogeographic outline and information on the conservation of Angolan mammals. We found confirmed records for 291 native species, most of which from the orders Rodentia (85), Chiroptera (73), Carnivora (39), and Cetartiodactyla (33). There is a large number of endemic and near endemic species, most of which are rodents or bats. The large diversity of species is favoured by the wide P. Although always exciting to see, especially for the first-time Africa visitor, once you move beyond the cliché of the ‘Big Five’ you will soon realise that our wilderness areas offer much more than certain flagship animal species. Africa’s large mammals are certainly a big attraction that one never tires of, but it’s often the smaller mammals, diverse birdlife and incredible reptiles that draw one back again and again for another unparalleled visit. Seeing a breeding herd of elephant for instance will always be special but there is a certain thrill in seeing a Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, cheetah or a Lilian’s lovebird – to name but a few. As a globally discerning traveller, look beyond the obvious, and challenge yourself to learn as much about all wildlife aspects and the ecosystems through which you will travel on your safari. -
A Review of Medicinal Uses, Phytochemistry and Pharmacological Activities of Alepidea Species
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC & TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH VO`LUME 10, ISSUE 05, MAY 2021 ISSN 2277-8616 A Review Of Medicinal Uses, Phytochemistry And Pharmacological Activities Of Alepidea Species Alfred Maroyi Abstract—Alepidea species are widely used as traditional medicines in southern Africa. This study aims at providing comprehensive information on the medicinal uses, phytochemical and pharmacological properties of Alepidia species. Electronic databases, including Web of Science, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, and Springer Link were used as information sources. Additional information was obtained pre-electronic sources such as books, book chapters, scientific journals and other grey literature obtained from the University library. The diterpenoids, particularly kaurene derivatives, alkaloids, flavonols, flavonoids, phenols, proanthocyanidin, saponins and tannins were the main phytochemical classes identified in the extracts of Alepidea species. Some species of Alepidea exhibited various pharmacological activities, including antibacterial, antifungal, anti-HIV, anti- inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, antioxidant, antiplasmodial, antiprotozoal, cardiovascular, diuretic and cytotoxicity activities. The genus Alepidea is a valuable source of bioactive phytochemical compounds with therapeutic potential in different diseases. More in vitro and in vivo animal studies are required to confirm the efficacy, safety and the mechanisms of actions before future clinical studies involving Alepidea species.
