Walter Kohler served as Wisconsin Governor from 1929 to 1931, thus Riverbend is often referred to as the Governor’s Mansion. Situated on a landscaped rise overlooking a bend in the Sheboygan River, Riverbend was built on a site that was formerly an Indian camp known as Longbend. Riverbend’s name was created from a combination of the words Longbend and Riverside (the original name of the Village of Kohler). It is considered one of the 30 most beautiful homes in the 1930s and is featured in the book Great Houses of America. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Olmsted Brothers designed Riverbend’s landscape. Private membership club opened in 2001; Club and Golf memberships are available. The renovated estate offers 31 guest rooms and occupies 51,042 square feet on four levels. Initiation deposit at time of joining, plus annual dues. The spa features in-room massage and a screened gazebo near the river for an outdoor massage experience. A boat and boat dock provide guests with access to River Wildlife land, located across the Sheboygan River. There are thirty-nine fireplaces in the mansion. Membership referrals are appreciated. Any associate who is responsible for a successful membership referral receives a complimentary night stay, with dinner and breakfast included. 7 LODGING | St. Andrews, Scotland Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa Kohler Company acquired the Old Course Hotel in October 2004. The hotel borders the renowned 17th Road Hole of the Old Course golf course and overlooks the famous Links courses, the West Sands Beach and the beautiful Scottish coastline. Many of these spectacular views can be seen in the Oscar-winning movie Chariots of Fire. (The current limit is 35 mph.) The change, which will go into effect in the near future, also includes a special 15 mph zone on Greenfield Drive and on Upper Road for children going to and from school. Signs will be flagged to alert motorists to the lowered limit. The lowered speed limit will also make the area safer for pedestrians crossing Greenfield Drive and Upper Road for activities taking place at Ebben Field. Kohler Police Chief Bill Rutten said the Kohler Police Department knows there will need to be some transition time, and will give warnings when appropriate. Dating from about 6,000 B.C., the earliest known tax records 3 were in the form of clay tablets unearthed in the ancient city-state of Lagash in mod- ern day Iraq. Property taxes were also col- lected in ancient Egypt, Persia, and China. 2 In the 11th century A.D., Lady Godiva rode naked on a white horse through Coventry, England to protest the tax assessment on her husband's property (he received a reduction). My qualifications? I am a straight, white, man.
