Jackson continues to use his voice to speak on an atrocity that has plagued Black peo- ple for decades—the horrific act of lynch- ing. While in town to receive the 2018 Lifetime Legacy Award from the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) at their NNPA Awards National Legacy Awards Black Tie Gala and Annual Convention in Norfolk, Virginia, Rev. Jackson spoke to NNPA publishers about the need to adopt legislation to address the despicable act of lynching. “Lynching should be a federal crime,” Rev. Miller Professor of English and American Studies © Copyright 2011 by Sara Tenenbaum All rights reserved ii Abstract of Thesis "I Know I Am Someone: Michael Jackson, Thriller, and American Identity" This thesis addresses the cultural phenomenon surrounding Michael Jackson's 1982 album Thriller and uses it as a lens through which to view and analyze the development of a distinct American, primarily youth, identity in 1983 and 1984. It is structured using a three-prong approach that first analyzes the sonic work of the music of Thriller, second explores the characteristics of Michaelmania and the youth identity being constructed within the Michael Jackson pop explosion, and third analyzes the backlash from both the white and African American communities against Jackson in that time to illuminate his subversion and danger to the status quo. I argue that Jackson's act of profound crossover during the Thriller era triggered within the American youth an equally profound act of identity formation that transcended racial stratification in America's past and created a foundational part of our contemporary identity that moves slightly beyond America's troubled racial history. Using both the voices of his fans and his critics to tease out the work his person and his music did in the early 1980's, I advocate we keep Jackson and his work foregrounded in our study of popular culture in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, as his pop explosion fundamentally and permanently effected how Americans understand ourselves and our relations with each other.

His mother, Katherine, took care of the family and sometimes took part time jobs. Both of Michael's parents loved music. His dad played guitar for an R & B band and his mother sang and played the piano. Growing up, all of the Jackson children were encouraged to study music. The Jackson Family Michael grew up in a large family. He had five brothers (Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Randy) and three sisters (Rebbie, La Toya, and Janet). Michael was the third youngest with Randy and Janet both being younger. The Jacksons were fairly poor and lived in a small house with just two bedrooms for eleven people. A Strict Father Joe Jackson was a very strict father. He didn't allow the kids to have a lot of friends and he often whipped the children if they disobeyed.     1 Gary, Indiana ichael Joseph Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana, on M August 29, 1958. Gary is a poor industrial1 city in the northwest corner of Indiana near Chicago, Illinois. Gary had, and still has, the same problems that many cities in the U.S.A. have: high unemployment2, gangs3, drugs and crime. People in Gary were lucky to have jobs. Many worked in the steel mills4 along the southern shore of Lake Michigan. All day and all night, the smoke from the mills gave the air an awful smell. But nobody complained5 because it was the smell of jobs. Gary’s streets were lined with small single-family homes. The neighborhoods were quiet during the day but dangerous at night. After dark, the main streets of Gary came alive with nightlife. “Sin6 City” was what people called Gary. They gave it that name because it was where people from Chicago and other parts of Indiana went to do things they could not do at home. Not far from the bright lights of Sin City, at 2300 Jackson Street, lived Joe and Katherine Jackson. Joe Jackson had not had an easy life. He was born in Arkansas. When his parents divorced7, he moved with his father to Oakland, California. His father was a school teacher who expected obedience8 from both his children and his pupils. Joe learned an important lesson from his father. He learned that survival9 depended on discipline10 and hard work. He became a strict, hard-working man. When his father remarried, Joe moved to East Chicago to live with his mother.

Jackson (1868-1937) Photograph Collection, ca. 1880-1920 FB-109 Introduction The collection includes photographs, mostly of people, from the family of Joseph W. “Joe” Jackson, a doctor from Barre, Vermont, from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Jules Rabin of Marshfield, Vermont, donated the collection to the Vermont Historical Society, in March and June, 2004; he had purchased the collection in the summer of 1969. The collection is housed in three archival flip-top boxes and occupies 1.25 linear feet of shelf space. Biographical Note Dr. Joseph Wells Jackson was born in Stockholm, New York, on April 25, 1868, the only child of Dr. John Henry Jackson and Anna Dutton Wells. After his wife’s death in November 1868, Dr. J. Henry Jackson married Coralinn Augusta Wood and had three more sons, Arthur Wood Jackson, Fred Kinney Jackson, and Henry Hollister Jackson. Dr. Joseph Jackson was educated at Barre Academy, Goddard Seminary, Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, and received his M.D. at the University of Vermont's College of Medicine in 1890. He interned at Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, Vermont, Butler Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, and in Danvers Asylum, near Salem, Massachusetts. He married Susan F. Emery (1850-1926) of St. Albans, ME, on February 22, 1893, and began practicing medicine in Barre, Vermont, at that time. The Jacksons' adoptive son, Edward Wells Jackson, was born in Georgetown, Massachusetts, on August 13, 1894. Edward Jackson became a pharmacist and was the proprietor of drug stores in Montpelier, Vermont, and, later, in Port Huron, Michigan.
