  • A New Formula in the Battle for Fallujah | the Washington Institute
MENU Policy Analysis / Articles & Op-Eds A New Formula in the Battle for Fallujah by Michael Knights May 25, 2016 Also available in Arabic ABOUT THE AUTHORS Michael Knights Michael Knights is the Boston-based Jill and Jay Bernstein Fellow of The Washington Institute, specializing in the military and security affairs of Iraq, Iran, and the Persian Gulf states. Articles & Testimony The campaign is Iraq's latest attempt to push militia and coalition forces into a single battlespace, and lessons from past efforts have seemingly improved their tactics. n May 22, the Iraqi government announced the opening of the long-awaited battle of Fallujah, the city only O 30 miles west of Baghdad that has been fully under the control of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group for the past 29 months. Fallujah was a critical hub for al-Qaeda in Iraq and later ISIL in the decade before ISIL's January 2014 takeover. On the one hand it may seem surprising that Fallujah has not been liberated sooner -- after all, it has been the ISIL- controlled city closest to Baghdad for more than two years. The initial reason was that there was always something more urgent to do with Iraq's security forces. In January 2014, the Iraqi security forces were focused on preventing an ISIL takeover of Ramadi next door. The effort to retake Fallujah was judged to require detailed planning, and a hasty counterattack seemed like a pointless risk. In retrospect it may have been worth an early attempt to break up ISIL's control of the city while it was still incomplete.

Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/injuries-continue-to-keep-jets-in-sick- bay-476497963.html?k=QAPMqC Injuries continue to plague Jets Seven wounded players missed Saturday's game By: Mike McIntyre WASHINGTON — Is there a doctor in the house? It’s been a common refrain for the Winnipeg Jets lately, as they just can’t seem to get close to a full, healthy lineup. Seven players were out due to injury in Saturday’s 2-1 loss in Philadelphia. Here’s what we know about all of them, with further updates expected today as the Jets return to action with a morning skate and then their game in Washington against the Capitals. Mark Scheifele has missed two games with a suspected shoulder injury, and there will be no rushing him back into action. He’s considered day-to-day at this point, and coach Paul Maurice had said last week he was a possibility to play either tonight, or tomorrow in Nashville. But don’t bet on it. Defenceman Toby Enstrom is battling a lower-body issue which kept him out for four games, saw him return in New Jersey last Thursday and then be back out on Saturday. Maurice said it’s a nagging thing that can change day-to-day, so his status is very much a question mark. Defenceman Dmitry Kulikov missed Saturday’s game after getting hurt Thursday in New Jersey. Maurice hasn’t said how long he could be out, only that it’s upper-body. Goalie Steve Mason has been sent back to Winnipeg for further testing on a lower-body injury he suffered late in the game against the New York Rangers last Tuesday, which was his first game back from his second concussion of the season.

Our field work in Iraq would not have been possible without the help of Sherzad Khidhir. His willingness to connect us with in-country stakeholders significantly contributed to the breadth of our interviews. Those interviews were made possible by our fantastic translators, Lezan, Ehsan, and Younis, who ensured that we could capture critical information and the nuance of discussions. NHL MORNING SKATE: STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS EDITION – JUNE 22, 2021 THREE HARD LAPS * The Lightning matched a franchise playoff record with eight goals to claim an 8-0 victory on home ice and move within one win of their second straight appearance in the Stanley Cup Final. * Brayden Point became the second player in NHL history – and first in 45 years – to post an eight-game goal streak in one postseason, following Reggie Leach who had a 10-game run with the Flyers in 1976. * After three straight one-goal games, including back-to-back overtime contests, the Golden Knights and Canadiens will square off for a 3-2 series lead tonight in Las Vegas. LIGHTNING SCORE EARLY AND OFTEN TO MOVE WITHIN ONE WIN OF FINAL After missing most of his team’s Stanley Cup run in 2020, captain Steven Stamkos (2-1—3) scored two of Tampa Bay’s eight goals as the Lightning benefited from another high-scoring outing at home to push the Islanders to the brink of elimination and move within one victory of advancing to the Stanley Cup Final. * The Lightning, who matched a franchise record for goals in a playoff game, became the fifth team to win a contest in the Conference Finals/Semifinals by a margin of eight or more goals, joining the Canadiens (11: Game 5 of 1944 SF), Oilers (9: Game 1 of 1985 CF), Red Wings (8: Game 2 of 1947 SF) and Bruins (8: Game 2 of 1972 SF). * Tampa Bay is averaging 4.50 goals per game at AMALIE Arena these playoffs, the highest single-postseason total in franchise history and highest by any team at home (min.
