Press Release 12 January 2016 (For immediate release) SIDNEY POITIER TO BE HONOURED WITH BAFTA FELLOWSHIP London,12 January 2016: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts will honour Sir Sidney Poitier with the Fellowship at the EE British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 14 February. Awarded annually, the Fellowship is the highest accolade bestowed by BAFTA upon an individual in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, television or games. Fellows previously honoured for their work in film include Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Sean Connery, Elizabeth Taylor, Stanley Kubrick, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Judi Dench, Vanessa Redgrave, Christopher Lee, Martin Scorsese, Alan Parker and Helen Mirren. Mike Leigh received the Fellowship at last year’s Film Awards. Sidney Poitier said: “I am extremely honored to have been chosen to receive the Fellowship and my deep appreciation to the British Academy for the recognition.” Amanda Berry OBE, Chief Executive of BAFTA, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that Sidney Poitier is to become a Fellow of BAFTA. Sidney is a luminary of film whose outstanding talent in front of the camera, and important work in other fields, has made him one of the most important figures of his generation. His determination to pursue his dreams is an inspirational story for young people starting out in the industry today. Her primary interests lie in contemporary cultural movements and identity formation in Central and Southeast Europe. In her work, she examines how literary and filmic works contribute to cultural landscapes and offer insight into the formation of nations and nationalities, particularly as they relate to minority-majority relations and constructs of difference. More specifically, I use the 1970s Blaxploitation movement • Race and subsequent shift of African-American representation into • Representation films reliant on a realist aesthetic to contextualize analysis of the shortcomings of the Civil Rights Movement to provide broad integration for African-Americans. Given other similarities between the racialized positionalities of African-Americans and Roma, I argue that Blaxploitation can illuminate trends in the cinematic depictions of CSEE Roma, since the Roma Rights movement has had to contend with similar shortcomings in achieving political, social, and economic inclusion. -

Agitating for Change: The Alliance Schools Initiative Eight years ago, many schools in Texas, like this one, were plagued by gangs, truancy, and poor academic results. Teachers were ready to try something new. Enter Ernie Cortes—a community organizer who is also disturbed by seeing kids turned off at school. Cortes formed an Alliance Schools Initiative to shake up public schools in working-class districts. The Cortes strategy was to work with churches and community activists to break down old hierarchies, to excite and empower teachers, and to reconnect schools to their communities. -

This article first appeared in Vierundzwanzigfteljahrsfchrift der Internationalen Maultrommelvirtuofengenoffenschaft (VIM for short) in issue 6 and is published with the kind permission of Frederick Crane The Trump in the Movies up to 1997 by Frederick Crane If you're like me, there's a little sensor built into your nervous system that, whenever the slightest hint of that unique sound of a trump is detected, in a recording, on radio, on TV, in a movie, switches into full command mode, shutting off all irrelevant signals--other sights and sounds, including whatever pressing matters your spouse is trying to talk to you about--and focuses your entire consciousness on that sound. The utter uniqueness of the trump's sound helps. Guitars, lutes, and mandolins all sound somewhat alike; pipe organs, reed organs, and electronic organs are similar to a degree; but nothing sounds like the trump. Combine such an alertness to the trump's sound with a lifelong compulsion to make files, and you've pretty much got me pegged. What follows is merely the disgorging of the contents of my TRUMP IN THE MOVIES file. I have distributed these ninety-odd films into six categories: Animated Cartoons, Westerns, Modern Rural Settings, Comedy, Drama and Biography, and Documentaries and Instruction. These will be discussed in turn, followed by my conclusions and a checklist of films. Not all of these titles can easily be categorized; I don't guarantee that I've got it right. And there are quite a few films that I have not seen or have seen only in part; the discussion of these will be brief. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SIDNEY POITIER, HOLLYWOOD’S FIRST BLACK LEADING MAN, TO RECEIVE NINE-FILM RETROSPECTIVE April 9–17, 2016 at Museum of the Moving Image Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger in In the Heat of the Night Astoria, Queens, NY, March 14, 2016—Actor, director, activist, and humanitarian, Sidney Poitier was a pioneer on many fronts: He has been called Hollywood’s first black leading man, and was the first African-American actor to win an Academy Award, in 1963. Poitier emerged as an iconic movie star during the dawn of the civil rights struggle, and during a time when there were few opportunities for black actors or directors in Hollywood. He projected a sense of dignity, moral strength, and determination balanced with cool poise. From April 9 through 17, 2016, Museum of the Moving Image will present a nine-film retrospective of Sidney Poitier. The series, Sidney Poitier, is organized by guest curator Mia Mask, Associate Professor of Film at Vassar College, and the co-editor with Ian Gregory Stachan of the new book Poitier Revisited: Reconsidering a Black Icon in the Obama Age (2015, Bloomsbury). Informed by the essays in the book, the film series invites viewers to take a fresh look at Poitier’s career, which is varied and complex, and includes significant work as a director as well as an actor. Mask will introduce No Way Out, which marked Poitier’s feature film debut in 1950, and Buck and the Preacher, his directorial debut, both screening on the opening day of the retrospective (April 9).
