Won Gi Jung 39 PICTORIAL POSTCARDS OF A COLONIAL CITY: THE "DREAM- WORK" OF JAPANESE IMPERIAL- ISM Won Gi Jung Introduction by Yumi Moon, Associate Professor of His- tory, Stanford University The Japanese empire produced many kinds of visual sources in governing its colonies. Won Gi Jung focuses on postcards of colonial Korea collected in the LUNA Archive of the University of Chicago, analyzing their pictorial narratives and the contexts in which they were made and consumed. Comparing Japan’s case with Western colonialism, Won Gi associates the fourishing postcard industry with the development of modern tourism in the Japanese metropole. He also accentuates Japan’s interest in using foreign tourism to present positive images of its empire to the world. For this reason it was the colonial state of Korea, rather than private studios, that produced the postcards, carefully curating the images of main tourist sites in Keijō (present-day Seoul) and elsewhere. Won Gi also discusses several publications by Western tourists who visited colonial Korea and offers a balanced commen- tary on the colonial state’s “dreamlike” representation of Keijō. Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 16/2-3 Honji Suijaku Faith Susan Tyler The term shinbutsu shugo 神仏習合 is used when speaking of the early rapprochement of S h in to and Buddhism, while honji suijaku 本地垂逆 is most often used to refer to a theory according to which the kami were treated as incarnations of the Buddhist deities. This relationship 01 kami and buddhas is the major characteristic and apparent content of Buddhist/Shinto syncretism and the term konjt suijaku can be used to refer to fully developed syncretism. The impression given by most books about either Shinto or Bud dhism is that they were separate religions with borders that over lapped thanks to the theory of honji suijaku. On the other hand, innocent reading of texts such as Heike monogatari and observation of religious practice and religious places today suggest instead that mingled Shinto and Buddhism has been, and in some instances still is, an important system of belief and practice. Further investigation confirms this perception. Institutional mingling was pervasive enough to occasion widespread destruction when the religions were declared separate; and personal devotion was a complicated and effective par taking of both Shinto and Buddhism. The idea that Shinto can be studied separately from Buddhism, with still separate attention given to honji suijaku, is due not to a study of history, but to an overemphasis on doctrine to define reli gion and to the motives for the strict separation of Shinto and Buddhism, both in fact and in scholarship, from early Meiji until the end of the Second World War.* In reaction, it has recently 1 This is not due just to the attitude of scholars. -

It is a serial cultural property that has eight component parts, all of which are linked to the worship of a sacred island that has continued from the fourth century to the present day. These component parts include Okitsu-miya of Munakata Taisha, which encompasses the entire island of Okinoshima and its three attendant reefs, located in the strait between the Japanese archipelago and the Korean peninsula; Okitsu- miya Yohaisho and Nakatsu-miya of Munakata Taisha, located on the island of Oshima; and Hetsu-miya of Munakata Taisha and the Shimbaru-Nuyama Mounded Tomb Group, located on the main island of Kyushu. Okinoshima has unique archaeological sites that have survived nearly intact, providing a chronological account of how ancient rituals based on nature worship developed from the fourth to the ninth centuries. It is of outstanding archaeological value also because of the number and quality of offerings discovered there, underscoring the great importance of the rituals and serving as evidence of their evolution over a period of 500 years, in the midst of a process of dynamic overseas exchange in East Asia. -

Zeh, Ph.D., Dean, Graduate School May, 2017 i Abstract Shinto is a native Japanese religion with a history that goes back thousands of years. Because of its close ties to Japanese culture, and Shinto’s strong emphasis on place in its practice, it does not seem to be the kind of religion that would migrate to other areas of the world and convert new practitioners. However, not only are there examples of Shinto being practiced outside of Japan, the people doing the practice are not always of Japanese heritage. The Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America is one of the only fully functional Shinto shrines in the United States and is run by the first non-Japanese Shinto priest. This thesis looks at the community of practice that surrounds this American shrine and examines how membership is negotiated through action. There are three main practices that form the larger community: language use, rituals, and Aikido. Through participation in these activities members engage with an American Shinto community of practice. -

Morley for the degree of Master ofArts in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program: Asian Studies to be taken June 2009 Title: THE GODDESSES' SHRINE FAMILY: THE MUNAKATA THROUGH THE KAMAKURA ERA This thesis presents an historical study ofthe Kyushu shrine family known as the Munakata, beginning in the fourth century and ending with the onset ofJapan's medieval age in the fourteenth century. The tutelary deities ofthe Munakata Shrine are held to be the progeny ofthe Sun Goddess, the most powerful deity in the Shinto pantheon; this fact speaks to the long-standing historical relationship the Munakata enjoyed with Japan's ruling elites. Traditional tropes ofJapanese history have generally cast Kyushu as the periphery ofJapanese civilization, but in light ofrecent scholarship, this view has become untenable. Drawing upon extensive primary source material, this thesis will provide a detailed narrative ofMunakata family history while also building upon current trends in Japanese historiography that locate Kyushu within a broader East Asian cultural matrix and reveal it to be a central locus of cultural production on the Japanese archipelago. -

ABSTRACT The metal goes into the plastic deformation after the application of external load. Most of the metal forming industries work on this principle of plastic deformation. Thus the understanding of plastic deformation in the metal forming indus- try is important. The research on the single material plastic deformation has been carried out from many centuries be- fore the era of Tresca. In this study the two metals 0.05% C steel annealed (soft metal) and 0.6% C steel quenched and tempered (hard metal) were deformed plastically in the parallel combination in the composite form. This study has been carried out with simple mathematical theory and simulated numerical model. The comparison shows the exact match between the mathematical and numerical results.
