Vinko Kerr-Harris Wellington, 2019 1 McDiarmid’s infamous publication of 1815, Striking and Picturesque Delineations of the Grand, Beautiful, Wonderful, and Interesting Scenery around Loch-Earn: A Description of the Beauties of Edinample and Lochearnhead, is an apt exemplar of what this thesis would have resembled otherwise. i ii Abstract The development of Minoan society has traditionally been considered by scholars to have been an insular phenomenon unique to the southern Aegean. Such assumptions, however, fail to acknowledge the wider context of the Bronze Age in the Eastern Mediterranean. Contact between the people of Crete and their contemporaries in Egypt and the Levant is well attested in the archaeological record, with a plethora of artefacts – imported and imitation – appearing on both sides of the Libyan Sea. Whilst investigations into the economic nature of these exchanges have been undertaken, little thought has been given to the cultural consequences of inter-regional contacts. This thesis examines the evolution of palatial society upon Crete and considers the extent to which interactions with comparatively more mature civilisations may have influenced the increasingly hierarchal trajectory of Minoan society, by re-evaluating the corpus of material culture and interconnectivity. iii Maps, Tables & Charts Maps Map 1.     THE MYCENAEAN SEMINAR 1954–2017 Olga Krzyszkowska and Andrew Shapland This list gives titles of individual seminars (and related events) with links and references to their publication in BICS. Initially discussions and some summaries were printed in the Seminar minutes, which were privately circulated (only from 21st January 1959 were minutes headed ‘Mycenaean Seminar’). The first published summaries appeared in BICS 13 (1966), soon superseding the minutes. Some seminars/public lectures were published as full-length articles (page references to these are given in bold). Summaries were usually, but not always, published in the subsequent year’s BICS and some never appeared at all. However, from 1993–94 onwards summaries of all Seminars and virtually all public lectures relating to Aegean prehistory held at the Institute were published in BICS. The summaries for 2014–15 were the last to appear in the print edition of BICS, which has now become thematic. Excavated by Gerald Cadogan under the aegis of the British School at Athens in the early 1970s on the top of a hill (Pyrgos) near the modern town of Myrtos, Myrtos-Pyrgos is one of the most important and long-lived Bronze Age sites on the southeastern coast of Crete. The study of the Neopalatial pottery from Cistern 2 contributes to two inter- related research fields: pottery studies of Minoan (i.e., Bronze Age) Crete and theories of political reconstructions based on pottery analysis. The presentation of the Neopalatial pottery from Cistern 2 contributes to the knowledge of ceramics and ceramic production in Crete: this dissertation presents in detail the Neopalatial pottery assemblage from Myrtos-Pyrgos, providing stylistic analysis and contextualization within the broader ceramic production of Neopalatial Crete; thus, it also improves the current knowledge of southeastern Crete, an area whose ceramics remain poorly known.

Haggis) The Early Iron Age (c. 1200-700 B.C.) on Crete is a period of transition, comprising the years after the final collapse of the palatial system in Late Minoan IIIB up to the development of the polis, or city-state, by or during the Archaic period. Over the course of this period, significant changes occurred in settlement patterns, settlement forms, ritual contexts, and most strikingly, in burial practices. Early Iron Age burial practices varied extensively throughout the island, not only from region to region, but also often at a single site; for example, at least 12 distinct tomb types existed on Crete during this time, and both inhumation and cremation were used, as well as single and multiple burial.

    Pharaohs, Dynasties and Kingdoms in Ancient Egypt The kings of Egypt were called pharaohs by the later Greeks and Hebrews: the name originates from the Egyptian per-aa, meaning ‘great house’. Most Egyptian kings and queens are grouped in dynasties (a family in which all the rulers in a time period belong). There is no archaeological evidence for the earliest Egyptian kings, so we cannot be sure if they existed. There are good records of the kings after 3100 bc, so the period before this is called Prehistoric (meaning ‘before written records’) or Predynastic (meaning ‘before the dynasties’). Like most cultures, the Egyptians dated historical and political events according to the years during which people ruled. Some written sources, called ‘king lists’, list when each Egyptian king ruled and the dynasty to which s/he belonged. Egyptologists (people who study Egypt) date history and art according to the rulers and dynasties. The ‘king lists’ are found in works of writers from the Roman period as well as inscriptions and papyri. Josephus, Sextus Julius Africanus and Bishop Eusebius of Caesarea quoted a Greco-Egyptian priest, Manetho, who wrote a history of Egypt. In his history, which does not survive, Manetho divided the rulers of Egypt into thirty dynasties. The list begins at around 3000 bc and ends at 343 bc with Nakhthoreb (Nectanebo II, as the Greeks called him), the last native Egyptian ruler. The dates are all approximate.     Ahmose, son of Ebana: The Expulsion of the Hyksos Ahmose, son of Ebana, was an officer in the Egyptian army during the end of the 17th Dynasty to the beginning of the 18th Dynasty (16th century BCE). Originally from Elkab in Upper Egypt, he decided to become a soldier, like his father, Baba, who served under Seqenenre Tao II in the early campaigns against the Hyksos. Ahmose spent most of his military life serving aboard the king’s fleet - fighting at Avaris, at Sharuhen in Palestine, and in Nubia during the service of Ahmose I, and was often cited for his bravery in battle by the king.
