The CHAIRMAN then called on Lieut.-Col. F. A. Molony, O.B.E., to read Mr. George B. Michell's paper entitled " The Land of Goshen and the Exodus," as the author of the paper was unable to be present. THE LAND OF GOSHEN AND THE EXODUS. By GEORGE B. MICHELL, O.B.E. HE accompanying map has been compiled from many T sources. It represents the conditions just before the Suez Canal was dug. The various irrigations of Egypt, some dating from the times of the early dynasties of Pharaohs, have cut up and altered the surface of the Delta so much that it is not always possible now to trace exactly the original water-courses, natural and artificial. Some of the ancient branches of the Nile have been canalized, diverted, silted or stopped up, or have run dry. Still, the general geology of the country has not altered more in historical times than can be accounted for by known causes, and certain features suffice to show the ancient conditions. Briefly, my purpose is to show (a) that the Wadi Tumilat was always a waterless and uninhabitable desert, and (b) that the popular identification of the Wadi with the Land of Goshen and the initial part of the route of the Exodus is completely erroneous and unjustifiable. -

Akhenaten and Moses
Story 27 A k h e n a t e n . and MOSES !? Aten is a creator of the universe in ancient Egyptian mythology, usually regarded as a sun god represented by the sun's disk. His worship (Atenism) was instituted as the basis for the mostly monotheistic — in fact, monistic — religion of Amenhotep IV, who took the name Akhenaten. The worship of Aten ceased shortly after Akhenaten's death; while Nefertiti was knifed to death by the Amun priesthood! Fig. 1. The relief dated 1350BC of the sun disk of Aten is a lime stone slab, with traces of the draufts- man’s grid still on it, found in the Royal Tomb of Amarna, the ill-fated capital of the founder of mono- theism long before Moses claimed it for Judaism. Aten was the focus of Akhenaten's religion, but viewing Aten as Akhena- ten's god is a simplification. Aten is the name given to represent the solar disc. The term Aten was used to designate a disc, and since the sun was a disc, it gradually became associated with solar deities. Aten expresses indirectly the life-giving force of light. The full title of Akhenaten's god was The Rahorus who rejoices in the horizon, in his/her Name of the Light which is seen in the sun disc. (This is the title of the god as it appears on the numerous stelae which were placed to mark the boundaries of Akhenaten's new capital at Amarna, or "Akhetaten."). -

A Sketch of the Geography and History of Egypt
A SKETCH OF THE GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY OF EGYPT EGYPT, situated in the northeastern corner of Africa, is a small country, if compared with the huge continent of which it forms a part; its size about equals that of the state of Maryland. And yet it has produced one of the greatest civilizations of the world. Egypt is the land on both sides of the lower part of the river Nile, from the town of Assuan (Syene) at the First Cataract (i.e. rapids) down to the Mediterranean Sea. Nature herself has divided the country into two different parts: the narrow stretches of fertile land adjoining the river from Assuan down to the region of modern Cairo--which we call "Upper Egypt" or the "Sa'id"- and the broad triangle, formed in the course of millennia from the silt deposited by the river where it flows into the Mediterranean. This we call "Lower Egypt" or the "Delta." In the course of history, a number of towns and cities have sprung up along the Upper Nile and its branches in the Delta. The two most impor- tant cities in antiquity were Memphis in the north and Thebes in the south. The site of Memphis, not far south of modern Cairo, is largely covered by palm groves today. At Thebes the remains of the temples of Amon, named after the neighboring villages of Karnak and Luxor, are still imposing witnesses of bygone greatness and splendor. The only other sites I shall mention are those from which specimens in our collection have come. -

Following this welcome development, we received an avalanche of feedbacks asking: “where is Midian?” “What society produced the learning and experience that informed such knowledgeable, concise and timeless counsel?” “Jethro was not Jewish and the interface with Moses predates Christianity; so, of what religion was he priest?” Thereafter, the publication of another article that also reviewed the works of Jethro from another perspective and the reactions it also generated gave us the desired impetus to search further. -

Practicing Medicine in Ancient Egypt Michael R. Zimmerman March 28, 2017 Michael Zimmerman is Adjunct Professor of Biology at Villanova University, Lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, and Visiting Professor at the University of Manchester (UK) KNH Centre for Biomedical Egyptology. et us start by imagining what Albert Einstein called a “thought experiment.” It is the year 5015 CE L and an excavation of an ancient hospital, ca. 2016 CE, uncovers an ancient book, written on paper rather than on the current electronic device. Although the book is in poor condition there is a partial hieroglyphic title, transcribed by an Egyptologist and a paleopathologist as Merck Manual. The book seems to be a compilation of disease descriptions and treatments by a long forgotten Dr. Merck. The diseases are difficult to decipher in an era when humans live to the age of 150 and die only when aged organs fail. It appears that the body could be attacked by minute parasitic organisms, visible only with an ancient tool called a “microscope.” Some cells appear to have taken on a life of their own, destroying the body by causing diseases known by a variety of poorly preserved terms such as “cancer” or “neoplasm.” The task of our future paleopathologist is analogous to that of the difficult undertaking of deciphering ancient Egyptian medical papyri. There are a number of surviving papyri, in various degrees of completeness, which have been studied by physicians and Egyptologists. They have done remarkably well, particularly in that the writing is mostly in the difficult hieratic rather than hieroglyphic text.
