INSTRUCTIONS DP10 MICROSCOPE DIGITAL CAMERA SYSTEM

This instruction manual is for the Olympus DP10 Microscope Digital Camera System. To ensure the safety, obtain optimum performance and familiarize yourself fully with the use of this system, we recommend you study this manual thoroughly before operating the system. Retain this instruction manual in an easily accessible place near the work desk for future reference. A X 7 2 1 8 IMPORTANT

Connecting this digital camera system to an Olympus UIS or LB series optical microscope allows you to easily photograph and record the magnified images observed through the microscope. Optimal optical performance may not be achieved if the DP10 microscope digital camera system is mounted on a non-Olympus video microscope system.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

1. Use the provided AC adapter only. Using another AC adapter will prevent the camera system from operating at optimum levels and may cause it to malfunc- tion. 2. The cords and cables are not resistant to bending or twisting. Do not apply excessive force to them. 3. To prevent toppling of the microscope, keep the total height of the microscope below 1m when attachments are mounted.

Safety and Operation Symbols

The following symbols are found on the camera and hand switch. Study the meaning of the symbols, and always use the equipment in the safest possible manner.

Symbol Explanation Before use, carefully read the instruction manual. Improper use could result in personal injury to the user and/or damage to the equipment.

i 1 Getting Ready 1. The camera system uses precision components. Handle it with care and avoid subjecting it to a sudden or severe impact. 2. The image displayed on the LCD monitor may be affected when used near equipment generating strong electromag- netic waves. This is not a malfunction and will not affect the actual image being shot. To avoid interference during operation, keep the unit far from any source of electromagnetic waves. 3. When mounting the camera on a tripod, be sure to hold the camera box while turning the tripod clamping knob. 4. Do not use the camera in areas where it may be subject to direct sunlight, high temperature and humidity, dust or vibrations. (For operating environment conditions, see Section 6, “SPECIFICATIONS” on page 22.)

2 Maintenance and Storage

1. Clean all glass components by wiping gently with gauze. To remove fingerprints or oil smudges, wipe with gauze slightly moistened with a mixture of ether (70%) and alcohol (30%) or EE System Cleaner (Olympus EE-6310). Since solvents such as ether, alcohol and EE-6310 are highly flammable, they must be handled carefully. Be sure to keep these chemicals away from open flames or potential sources of electrical sparks --- for example, electrical equipment that is being switched on or off. Also remember to always use these chemicals only in a well-ventilated room. 2. Parts other than the glass components should be cleaned by wiping with a clean cloth. Do not use organic solvent to remove major stains. Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with a neutral detergent solution. 3. To avoid any degradation in performance, do not attempt to disassemble or modify any part of the system. 4. When not using the camera system, keep it covered with the provided dust cover.

CAUTION The camera box incorporates a rechargeable lithium battery used for data back-up. Nevertheless, if the camera box is not used for about 2 days without the AC adapter connected, data (such as date/ time) may be lost. Because the camera box incorporates a lithium battery, be sure to check local regulations for proper disposal procedures when disposing if it.

3 Caution

If the attachment is used in a manner not specified by this manual, the safety of the user may be imperiled. In addition, the attachment may also be damaged. Always operate the equipment as outlined in this instruction manual.

The following symbols are used to set off text in this instruction manual. : Indicates that failure to follow the instructions in the warning could result in bodily harm to the user and/or damage to equipment (including objects in the vicinity of the equipment). # : Indicates that failure to follow the instructions could result in damage to equipment. } : Indicates commentary (for ease of operation and maintenance).

Data Storage Caution

Recorded picture data may be lost in any of the following cases. Please note that Olympus as- sumes no liability for loss of recorded data.

· Improper handling of the SmartMedia (SSFDC). · Unauthorized servicing by the user or a third party. · The SSFDC is subjected to static or other electrical noise. · If the card cover is opened or the AC adapter is unplugged during SSFDC data recording or erasure (including formatting). · General equipment failure.

2 Attaching the Hand Switch (Fig. 3) ² Insert the hand switch connector @ into the connector ² on the camera @ box. # Insert the connector until it clicks. Check the connection by pulling it gently.

Fig. 3

3 Attaching the AC Adapter (Fig. 4) ³ # Always be sure to use the provided AC adapter. Using any other AC adapter will result in malfunction. @ 1. Insert the AC adapter plug @ into a power outlet ². ² | 2. Insert the AC adapter connector ³ into the DC input connector | on the camera box. }The AC adapter gets hot when it has been connected to a power outlet for a long period. This is not a malfunction.

Fig. 4 4 To unplug the AC adapter Set the main switch of the camera box to OFF, unplug the AC adapter connector ³, then remove the AC adapter plug @ from the power outlet ². CAUTION ◆ Always use a power supply with the specified voltage. ◆ Do not operate the camera system when the AC adapter plug is not completely inserted into the power outlet. ◆ Never insert or remove the AC adapter plug when your hands are wet. ◆ If the AC adapter or cord is excessively hot, or is emitting smoke or odor, immediately stop using the camera system and remove the plug from the power outlet. ◆ Never attempt to power the camera system using an AC adapter other than the provided. Doing so could cause a failure in the camera box or power supply or result in an unexpected acci- dent. Our warranty cannot cover problems caused by the use of an AC adapter other than the exclusive AC adapter provided with the system. ◆ When unplugging the AC adapter from the power outlet, do not pull it out by the cord. Always grasp the AC adapter body. Never pull, bend or twist the AC adapter cord excessively or try to ex- tend it. ◆ If the AC adapter cord is damaged or disconnected or there is a contact failure in its plug, immediately contact your local Olympus representative. ◆ Be sure to unplug the AC adapter from the power outlet when- ever the unit is not in use.

@ 4 Inserting (Removing) the Card (Fig. 5) ² # Commercially available 5 V cards cannot be used with this camera system. Always use a 3.3 V card. These are available directly from Olympus or can be obtained from a dealer. Before using a commercially available 3.3 V card, be sure to format it. (See page 14.) · Ensure that the main switch @ is OFF (the switch is not illuminated), then insert the card ² in the direction shown in Fig. 5.
