V. RECENT SERVICE AT MACALESTER COLLEGE, 2010-PRESENT

2016-2017 Coanaged the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation "Lifelong Learners" grant with Tina Kruse, Karin Trail Johnson, and Paul Schadewald under the auspices of the Institute for Global Citizenship. I led and developed two successful week-long faculty and staff urban colloquia in the Pacific Northwest in May and June of 2017. Both continued to strengthen College relationships with community and academic partners in the Pacific Northwest and facilitated the exploration of critical urban issues. The Seattle program focused on innovation, homelessness, displacement, multiculturalism, and community development, while the Portland program was focused on urban sustainability broadly conceived. Colloquia also focused on helping faculty members consider the process of immersive learning and its meaning for a liberal arts education.

2012-2016 Developed two community based research courses, with strong civic engagement components.

In the three Food Politics and Policy courses I taught, students were assigned a Twin Cities organization for which they collaborated on a semester long project. These courses enabled students to make a difference in the community, and strengthened organizational relationships with Macalester College. For example, one group developed a (successful) Ramsey County Board proposal to allow Frogtown Farms to compost household organic vegetable matter on its premises. Other organizations included Open Arms, Urban Roots, Hmong American Partnership, Stone’s Throw Farm, the Wedge Co-op, Renewing the Countryside, and the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP).

I also helped design and mentor students in the Sustainability for Global Citizenship course, the 25-week long flagship seminar for the college-wide Educating Sustainability Ambassadors (ESA) initiative housed in the Institute for Global Citizenship. The course helped prepare students for a 10-week long “sustainability” project that they developed in collaboration with a local organization and worked on over the summer. These organizations included the American Refugee Committee (ARC), Hmongtown Marketplace, Macalester-Groveland Neighborhood Council, Project for Pride in Living, Children’s HeartLink, the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, the Metropolitan Council, and Friends of the Boundary Waters. With the exception of ARC, I mentored the students over the summer. This included weekly meetings with the student cohort, organizational site visits, and regular check-ins with their supervisors. Because students had to apply and interview for the course, I also was deeply involved in both the recruitment and selection process.

2010-2018 Supervised 53 community-based, academic internships for students interning for state and national legislative offices, policy think tanks, interest groups and other organizations.

2010-2016 Supervised 4 preceptors – one for Sustainability for Global Citizenship, one for Legislative Politics, and two for US Politics.
