RECENT SERVICE AT MACALESTER COLLEGE, 2010-PRESENT 2016-2017 Coanaged the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation "Lifelong Learners" grant with Tina Kruse, Karin Trail Johnson, and Paul Schadewald under the auspices of the Institute for Global Citizenship. I led and developed two successful week-long faculty and staff urban colloquia in the Pacific Northwest in May and June of 2017. Both continued to strengthen College relationships with community and academic partners in the Pacific Northwest and facilitated the exploration of critical urban issues. The Seattle program focused on innovation, homelessness, displacement, multiculturalism, and community development, while the Portland program was focused on urban sustainability broadly conceived. Colloquia also focused on helping faculty members consider the process of immersive learning and its meaning for a liberal arts education. 2012-2016 Developed two community based research courses, with strong civic engagement components. In the three Food Politics and Policy courses I taught, students were assigned a Twin Cities organization for which they collaborated on a semester long project. These courses enabled students to make a difference in the community, and strengthened organizational relationships with Macalester College. For example, one group developed a (successful) Ramsey County Board proposal to allow Frogtown Farms to compost household organic vegetable matter on its premises. Other organizations included Open Arms, Urban Roots, Hmong American Partnership, Stone’s Throw Farm, the Wedge Co-op, Renewing the Countryside, and the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP). I also helped design and mentor students in the Sustainability for Global Citizenship course, the 25-week long flagship seminar for the college-wide Educating Sustainability Ambassadors (ESA) initiative housed in the Institute for Global Citizenship. The course helped prepare students for a 10-week long “sustainability” project that they developed in collaboration with a local organization and worked on over the summer. These organizations included the American Refugee Committee (ARC), Hmongtown Marketplace, Macalester-Groveland Neighborhood Council, Project for Pride in Living, Children’s HeartLink, the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, the Metropolitan Council, and Friends of the Boundary Waters. With the exception of ARC, I mentored the students over the summer. This included weekly meetings with the student cohort, organizational site visits, and regular check-ins with their supervisors. Because students had to apply and interview for the course, I also was deeply involved in both the recruitment and selection process. 2010-2018 Supervised 53 community-based, academic internships for students interning for state and national legislative offices, policy think tanks, interest groups and other organizations. 2010-2016 Supervised 4 preceptors – one for Sustainability for Global Citizenship, one for Legislative Politics, and two for US Politics. 2013-2018 Interviewed applicants for the Truman Scholarship 2015-2016 Led two sessions for the Semester’s Study-away Returnee Lunch Series 2016-8 Served on Political Science Awards Committee 2014-2017 Involved in discussions to develop a Food and Agricultural Studies Concentration 2015 Selected for, participated in, and helped lead a session for Educating Sustainability Ambassadors workshop. 2014 Selected for and participated in Seattle Faculty Urban Colloquium 2011-2016 Helped mentor students and evaluated letters for students applying and participating in the national Project Pericles policy conference in concert with Paul Schadewald at the Civic Engagement Center 2011 Participated in discussion panels organized by the student Political Science Association on elections and health care policy. 2011 Supervised two independent student projects on food policy, both focused on food access (Camille Mefleh and Simon Kassel) 2011-2012 Supervised Honors Thesis for Kaitlin Roh, “Challenges to Policy Implementation: An Examination of an Integrated Health Care Delivery Demonstration Project.” 2010 Mentored Bonner Public Policy Fellows developing policy wiki pages in concert with Macalester’s Civic Engagement Center VI. • Senior/Graduation Fee
Senior/Graduation Fee What is this fee? This nonrefundable fee would be applied to degree‐seeking students who reach senior status or apply for graduation using the WSU Graduation Application. This would include students earning an Associate, Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral degree. A student would be charged a single fee per degree, so a student having to reapply or move their graduation application would not be charged multiple times. This fee will not impact the eligibility of graduation or hinder the awarding of a degree. This will prevent the mailing of official transcripts and printing of the diploma. When will this fee be assessed? This fee will ideally be assessed at the time that a student reaches their senior/final year. How much is this fee? We are asking for a $25 Senior/Graduation Fee. What will the revenue from this fee be used for? These funds would be used for the expenses associated with graduation, the Warrior Grad Celebration, and commencement. This will include diploma covers, academic honors cords, printing diplomas, mailing diplomas, commencement costs which may include but are not limited to printing costs, refreshments, decorations, music, and other supplies. What is the expected amount of revenue from this fee? It is anticipated based on past, current, and past trends, that roughly 1835 students would have this fee assessed each fiscal year. This would equate to $45,875.00 annually. Why is this fee being requested? Currently there is no budget exclusive to graduation/commencement. Primarily Academic Affairs and the Registrar’s Office have paid for these expenses from their own operating budgets.

HANSON PresidenT’s Message Welcome to BSU’s biannual magazine – outstanding as ever, and now with a new name, Bemidji State University. The former name, Horizons, had been in place for many years, but it was time this important publication had a clearer connection to the institution. Once you’re done reading about the people and progress that make us all so proud, I hope you will give your copy an honored place on your coffee table at home or at work.
