    Chapter 13: Marine Fisheries, Fisheries Management, and Florida Bay South Florida waters have been attractive to fishermen for millennia. Some mar- ket fishing by boats from Cuba began in the eighteenth century. Commercial fishing became more viable after 1900 when sources of ice for preserving the catch became more reliable. Well-heeled sportfishermen, mostly from the North, began taking trips to the Everglades region in the 1870s, frequently hiring locals as guides. By the time Everglades National Park was authorized in 1934, both sport and commercial fishing were well established in Florida Bay and along the Gulf Coast. The dividing line be- tween sport and commercial fishermen was not always sharp. Many individual fish- ermen and the captains who guided them were in the habit of selling excess fish to fish house operators. Although they would surely represent themselves as sportsmen, when they sold part of their catch, these individuals were entering the commercial market. Operations by commercial fishermen in park waters proved to be one of the most contentious issues in Everglades National Park’s history. During the campaign for the park’s authorization, NPS officials came to understand that Monroe County interests would adamantly oppose the park unless given adequate assurances that com- mercial fishing could continue. The Service provided public assurances to commercial fishermen while internally acknowledging that restrictions on fishing would very likely be necessary in the future. To further natural resource management goals, park manag- ers gradually established limitations, culminating in a total ban on commercial fishing and bag limits for sportfishermen, which became effective January 1, 1986.667 Early NPS Assurances to Fishermen Park Service officials in the 1930s were quick to assure South Floridians that sportfishing was a long-accepted recreational pastime in national parks and would be permitted in the proposed Everglades National Park.

Along with cooking, sewing was one of the most time consuming chores faced by women. Sewing was an essential skill. In addition to meeting her family’s basic clothing needs, women also sewed cloaks, jackets, hats, and formal clothes plus the household’s linen, bedding, and quilts. These items, requiring many hours of labor, were hand sewn.1 The sewing machine changed all that. Francis Trevelyan Miller proclaimed in 1913 that “no invention has done so much to deliver woman from drudgery. No one piece of machinery has done so much to deliver her from her burdens, her seclusion, her serfdom” as the sewing machine; the sewing machine gave women their “self-reliance and freedom.”2 An 1897 official Singer Sewing Machine Company history summarizes the societal benefits this way: “And so the great importance of the sewing-machine is in its influence upon the home, in the countless hours it has added to woman’s leisure for rest and refinement; in the increase of time and opportunity for that early training of children, for lack of which so many pitiful wrecks are strewed along the shores of life; in the number less avenues it has opened for woman’s employment; and in the comforts it has brought within the reach of all, which could formerly be attained only by the wealthy few.”3 The fifth United States patent for a sewing machine was issued to Elias Howe in September 1846 for the lock-stitch and the eye-pointed needle, which were essential for any working sewing machine.4 His patent was initially contested but once it was upheld by the courts in 1853, Howe began charging sewing machine manufacturers a $25 license fee, about half the average price of a machine.

The widespread presence of Singer in Electronic, Print and Digital media has assisted the brand to create for itself a robust and lasting impression on the customers’ minds. Research findings reflect that consumers believe in SINGER as a contemporary brand which is relevant to their lives. Innovative campaigns and activities helped the brand to reach even closer to consumers. Product-centric field activations, shop-centric fairs, product demonstrations, free service campaigns and mobile shops have been helping the brand to be engaged with more consumers. A number of new television commercials on Voice Control TVs, Washing Machines and No-frost Refrigerators were released during the year. Extensive campaigns were launched during Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha and the Cricket World Cup. Abolombon: A SINGER - BRAC Initiative In Bangladeshi society, developing earning skills is a key for women to be empowered. Women particularly belonging to extreme poverty level are considered as the underprivileged as they do not have the financial capacity or access to mainstream skill development educations. In this backdrop, SINGER Bangladesh, in association with leading development agency BRAC, took a joint initiative titled – ‘Abolombon’. The objective of this two-year long project was to facilitate the underprivileged women with free of cost tailoring training to develop sewing skills. Under this initiative, 5,000 women, living below the poverty line, received tailoring training for free at 15 BRAC centres across the country.
