  • Illustration and the Visual Imagination in Modern Japanese Literature By
Eyes of the Heart: Illustration and the Visual Imagination in Modern Japanese Literature By Pedro Thiago Ramos Bassoe A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy in Japanese Literature in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Professor Daniel O’Neill, Chair Professor Alan Tansman Professor Beate Fricke Summer 2018 © 2018 Pedro Thiago Ramos Bassoe All Rights Reserved Abstract Eyes of the Heart: Illustration and the Visual Imagination in Modern Japanese Literature by Pedro Thiago Ramos Bassoe Doctor of Philosophy in Japanese Literature University of California, Berkeley Professor Daniel O’Neill, Chair My dissertation investigates the role of images in shaping literary production in Japan from the 1880’s to the 1930’s as writers negotiated shifting relationships of text and image in the literary and visual arts. Throughout the Edo period (1603-1868), works of fiction were liberally illustrated with woodblock printed images, which, especially towards the mid-19th century, had become an essential component of most popular literature in Japan. With the opening of Japan’s borders in the Meiji period (1868-1912), writers who had grown up reading illustrated fiction were exposed to foreign works of literature that largely eschewed the use of illustration as a medium for storytelling, in turn leading them to reevaluate the role of image in their own literary tradition. As authors endeavored to produce a purely text-based form of fiction, modeled in part on the European novel, they began to reject the inclusion of images in their own work.

  • For the Rainbow's Beauty Cast After Floods of Human Tears, Arks of Safety
Songs re-written: For the Beauty … For the rainbow’s beauty cast after floods of human tears, arks of safety in the past, -- claiming faith and conquering fears God of all, to you we raise -- this our hymn of grateful praise. For the joy of human love – partners named by church and state, allies here and friends above who, with joy, have silenced hate – God of all to you we raise – this our hymn of grateful praise. For the church with open doors, for the pews where all may rest, for each child by love restored, once outside, now home and blessed – God of all, to you we raise -- this our hymn of grateful praise. Woke Up this Morning with my Mind I woke up this morning with my mind -- stayed on Jesus I woke up this morning with my mind -- stayed on Jesus I woke up this morning with my mind -- stayed on Jesus Hallelu, hallelu, Hallelujah. I'm singing a rainbow with my mind -- stayed on Jesus I'm singing a rainbow with my mind -- stayed on Jesus I'm singing a rainbow with my mind -- stayed on Jesus Hallelu, hallelu, Hallelujah. We opened the doors up in our church -- stayed on Jesus We opened the doors up in our church -- stayed on Jesus We opened the doors up in our church -- stayed on Jesus Hallelu, hallelu, Hallelujah. Just as I am Just as I am, your holy child, my truth so fragile, undefiled, I turned to you and then you smiled – O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

  • Western Influence on Japanese Art Song (Kakyoku) in the Meiji Era Japan
WESTERN INFLUENCE ON JAPANESE ART SONG (KAKYOKU) IN THE MEIJI ERA JAPAN JOANNE COLE Master of Music Performance (by Research) Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts and Music The University of Melbourne December 2013 Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music Performance (by Research) Produced on Archival Quality Paper Abstract The focus of this dissertation is the investigation of the earliest Western influences on Kōjō no Tsuki (Moon over the Castle) the composition of Japanese composer Rentaro Taki. Kōjō no Tsuki is an example of an early Japanese Art Song known as Kakyoku composed during Meiji Era Japan (1868 - 1912). The dissertation is divided into four chapters with an introduction. Chapter One explores the historical background of the Meiji Era Japan, highlighting the major impact of the signing of the treaty between the United States of America and Japan in 1853. This treaty effectively opened Japan to the West, not only for trade, but for exchange of social, political and cultural ideas. The resulting evolution that occurred in Japan from feudal society to one of early twentieth century is illustrated by reference to articles and writings of the Meiji Era. The second chapter examines the Japanese Art Song form Kakyoku using the example of Rentarō Taki’s song, Kōjō no Tsuki. This chapter presents an argument to illustrate, from an anthropological viewpoint, why this new form of Japanese Art Song could have its own identity based on Western ideas and not be categorised as a Japanese Folk Song known as Minʹyō or Shin Minyō.

  • Detecting Japanese Vernacular Modernism: Shinseinen Magazine and the Development of the Tantei Shôsetsu Genre, 1920-1931
DETECTING JAPANESE VERNACULAR MODERNISM: SHINSEINEN MAGAZINE AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TANTEI SHÔSETSU GENRE, 1920-1931 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Kyoko Omori * * * * * The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Professor William J. Tyler, Adviser Approved by Professor Richard Torrance Professor Mark Bender Adviser Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures ABSTRACT The post-war discourse on modern Japanese literature has presented the binary opposition between “pure” versus “popular” literature as a historical fact, configuring popular literature as the disposable “other” of “pure” literature. Consequently, Japanese literary studies have paid relatively little attention to popular forms such as mystery fiction, samurai “period” fiction, the romance novel, and “nansensu” humor. This dissertation examines the discursive formation of the Japanese modernist popular genre known as “tantei shôsetsu” or “detective fiction.” Focusing on the popular monthly magazine Shinseinen and several of its writers, it discusses the theoretical and practical dimensions of “tantei shôsetsu” as a vernacular form of modernist literary production. In doing so, it situates the genre within contemporaneous debates about the meaning of both modernity and literature in Japan during the 1920s. Chapter One establishes the theoretical terms for “vernacular modernism” by illuminating the ways in which popular literary production engaged with the forces of commercialism and Westernization that also shaped the development of canonical Japanese literature during the early twentieth century. Chapter Two surveys established critical views of Modernism in Japan and shows that they fail to account for the significance of vernacular expression.

March 26, 2021 File No. 20.0153134.30 Mr. Randal Goddard 146 Larabee Street Horicon, Wisconsin 53032 Re: Post‐Mitigation January and February 2021 Indoor Air and Cabinet Air Test Results Dear Mr. Goddard: With this letter, GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA) follows up on our February 2, 2021 and February 26, 2021 telephone conversations regarding the indoor air sampling at 146 Larabee Street in Horicon, Wisconsin between January 18 and 19, 2021 and on February 23, 2021. As set forth below, that sampling did not show evidence of trichloroethylene (TCE) originating from vapors beneath the basement of your home, which is where TCE would be expected to be found if TCE vapors were entering from an underground source. TCE was detected in the first and second floor levels and traced specifically to a storage cabinet on the second floor that previously contained cleaning agents that off‐gas TCE. Outside of that cabinet, the concentrations measured in the first and second floors were detected, but below the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ (WDNR’s) applicable adverse carcinogenic effect threshold of 0.89 parts per billion by volume (ppbv). The applicability of the carcinogenic effect threshold for your home is described in the discussion section below. INDOOR AIR SAMPLING Because of the extensive past efforts taken to assess and update the sub‐slab depressurization system installed to address the vapor intrusion pathway and the pre‐ and post‐mitigation sampling efforts, the January 24, 2020 summary report1 documenting assessment and mitigation of the vapor intrusion pathway is provided in Attachment 1 for your convenience.
