The village appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as and was held by William the Conqueror. In 1538, Henry VIII built the beautiful Nonsuch Palace, considered to be one of his greatest building projects, and was a favourite of his hunting grounds. The estate is now known as Nonsuch Park and whilst the original palace was destroyed in the 17th century, in its place is Nonsuch Mansion which is a Grade II listed 18th century house that is sometimes open to the public. Samuel Pepys was a regular visitor to Ewell between 1663 and 1665 and spells it as in his diary. In 1811, Mr White and Mr Brumfield established a National School and was built by Thomas Calverley in 1814 - a large, architecturally-listed imitation castellated style property – which gave the school financial benefaction in 1860. Other notable residents of Ewell include Petula Clark, the singer who was born in Ewell in 1932, Michael Frayn, author and playwright, footballer Ron Harris and TV presenter Michaela Strachan. Ewell has connections with the English Civil War with secret tunnels that date from this period underneath the village, but these are poorly documented and not accessible to the public. However, one such secret passage is said to emerge under the shop on the corner of West Street and High Street. Ewell is also noted for its rather large telephone exchange which is equipped with underground facilities that were designed to be able to survive a nuclear conflict during the later Cold War years. There are a number of landmarks in Ewell including Grade II listed Bourne Hall in the centre of the village; a modernist circular structure with a central glass dome which houses the public library, a subterranean theatre, gymnasium, café and local museum. In the surrounding gardens is a garden wall and waterwheel that previously belonged to Garbrand Hall, a large mansion that Bourne Hall replaced. In the adjoining Ewell Court neighbourhood is Ewell Court Park which incorporates Ewell Court House and Ewell Court Lake. Ewell boasts plenty of leisure, sport and recreation facilities including the Ebbisham Sports Club, Ewell Athletics Track, which is a Class B UK Athletics track where the Epsom & Ewell Harriers have trained since the 1950s, Ewell Tennis Club, Hogsmill River and its former gunpowder mills, pubs and cafes, delightful restaurants and fashion boutiques. There are two railway stations, Ewell West and Ewell East, and plenty of bus routes providing links to Kingston Upon Thames, Worcester Park and London. Ÿ Ewell West and Ewell East mainline rail stations with regular services to London Waterloo and London Victoria (approximately 20 minutes), as well as Horsham, Dorking and Guildford. Ÿ Within a short driving distance is the A3 and M25 motorway network providing easy access to London, the south coast, Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Ÿ Excellent choice of schools including Ewell Grove and Glyn & Nonsuch High School.
