Background South Asians refer to people from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and people from the South Asian Diaspora. In 2011, there were 1,567,400 South Asian people living in Canada* representing 4.8% of Canada’s total population. In Ontario, South Asians comprise 965,990 people, or 7.6% of the total provincial population of 12,651,795. In 2011, there were 356,430 South Asian people living in Peel Region. They represented 27.7% of the total Peel population and 48.6% of the total visible minority population in Peel. The South Asian population in Peel is growing at a faster rate than the Peel population as a whole. Between 2006 and 2011, Peel’s total population grew from 1,154,070 to 1,289,015 representing a growth rate of 11.7%. However, Peel’s South Asian population exceeded that growth rate, increasing from 272,690 in 2006 to 356,430 by 2011 (a growth rate of 30.7%). In Peel Region both the largest population and highest concentration of South Asians is in Brampton. As of 2011, the South Asian population in Brampton was 200,220 versus 154,210 in Mississauga and 1,995 in Caledon. In addition, South Asians comprise 38.4% of the total population in Brampton versus 21.8% in Mississauga and only 3.4% in Caledon. Diabetes Among South Asians This inventory is part of an exploratory study of diabetes among South Asians in Peel. Diabetes is a considerable health concern for the South Asian population. South Asians are more likely to develop diabetes, particularly Type 2, and more likely to develop it earlier on in life as compared to the general population. Women and immigrants of South Asian background may be of highest risk. Furthermore, due to language and cultural barriers, South Asians may encounter difficulties in accessing health care services, and they tend to be poorer at managing their diabetes. This puts them at greater risk of health complications (Muirhead, 2015). B. Purpose of the Inventory The purpose of the inventory is to provide workers in Peel’s human services sector with information about organizations that are focused on serving the South Asian community in Peel. The inventory can be used as a source for referrals to South Asian organizations, networking among human service workers in Peel, and collaboration between South organizations and other organizations (e.g., those providing diabetes related services, hospital & health care organizations, etc.) in Peel. * All population figures used in this report are for residents in private household only. 2 An Inventory of Agencies Serving the South Asian Community in Peel 2015 C. Methodology Data Sources A variety of data sources were consulted to gather data for this report including: An Inventory of Different Types of Settlement Services in Peel Region, 2010 An Inventory of Human Service Organizations Serving the Sri Lankan Community in Peel Region, 2008 An Inventory of Settlement Services in Peel, 2013 (rev.) Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Charities Listings Council of Agencies Serving South Asians, Service Directory Peel Information Network, Ontario, Canada (PINET) Region of Peel Website Settlement.org 211 Ontario Consultation with agencies or agency websites Primary Sample A survey of the above data sources provided information on the following types of agencies: South Asian-focused organizations in Peel (n = 16) † Mainstream agencies with specific services for the South Asian community (n = 5) ‡ In addition to these agencies, a list of some religious/spiritual organizations (n = 33) and a list of media in that may be of interest to those in the South Asian community in Peel have been included. † South Asian-focused agencies are organizations that are focused primarily on serving members of the South Asian community. ‡ Mainstream agencies are organizations that are focused on serving the general population, including newcomers to Canada and all ethnic groups in Canada. Some of them offer services that are geared to specific visible minority groups, in addition to their regular offering of services for the general population. In contrast, multi-ethnic and newcomer agencies specifically focus on ethno-specific groups and newcomers to Canada. 3 An Inventory of Agencies Serving the South Asian Community in Peel 2015 Related Organizations Given the focus of the project on diabetes among South Asians in Peel, the inventory includes contact information for diabetes-focused organizations and those providing diabetes-related services (45).
