Putting her job as a newspaper reporter in jeopardy, she helps Daniel through chemotherapy and the last months of his life, trying to convince Daniel to end his relationship with his drug-addicted brother Shane in the process. During her time home, Kerry learns secrets that upend everything she knows about her family, forcing her to evaluate her life, and the anger she's felt toward those in it. v EXT. NEW YORK CITY PARK - DAY A small AUDIENCE gathers around a podium, where MACK BRAVER, 50s, slippery politician, speaks. As he talks, KERRY RYAN, 30, hard-edged and cerebral, scribbles notes on a notepad, holding a folded newspaper. MACK Those of us in this city who struggle with drug addiction need help. They deserve help. And if I’m elected mayor this November, I will press the governor to gather every resource possible to help them. The crowd APPLAUDS and CHEERS. Kerry watches, displeased. She writes more on the notepad. AFTER Mack strolls toward his car. Kerry runs him down. KERRY Mack, I really have to ask you something. MACK You always have to ask me something. Call Alejandra and we can schedule an appointment. KERRY You promised you’d up state assistance for drug addicts. Then you voted against it. That makes no sense. MACK You guys are always trying to do this gotcha stuff. Kerry writes this down as a quote. MACK (CONT’D) I’ve evolved in my thinking. I know I said we didn’t need it before, but new facts caused me to rethink my position. 1 KERRY So you admit you said the funding wasn’t needed. MACK That’s public record, Kerry. Of course I did. Kerry pulls out the folded newspaper. KERRY The last time you said the funding wasn’t needed was two days after you promised you’d fight for it. MACK What are you talking about? KERRY Fundraiser in Astoria. We had a stringer there. MACK Well, he obviously got it wrong. Kerry shows Mack the newspaper. Some lines are highlighted. KERRY Direct quote. Mack steps back. KERRY (CONT’D) Why won’t you just admit this wasn’t about saving money? The pandering is pretty obvious. MACK I’ve done no such thing. KERRY It’s public record, Mack. Of course you did. She hands the paper to Mack. KERRY (CONT’D) Why were you pandering to the conservative voters back there? MACK I don’t appreciate this kind of character assassination. 2 KERRY So no comment? MACK Goodbye, Kerry. Mack stomps away toward his car. Kerry strolls off, smirking. KERRY (V.O.) I can’t believe I’m even talking to you. You swore you would drop dead if you went to the doctor. EXT. CITY STREET - DAY Kerry speeds along with purpose, talking on her cell phone. DANIEL (V.O.) I almost did. A strapping young man violated me by plunging his finger up my ass. KERRY I don’t want that image in my head. DANIEL (V.O.) Then ask nicer questions. KERRY It couldn’t have been that bad. DANIEL (V.O.) He bent me over, lubed his hand up, and went to town. He said he was looking for bumps. I asked him if he could find my dignity. KERRY Yet you survived. See? Going to a professional leads to good things. DANIEL (V.O.) And you’re a doctor now? KERRY No. But I know they know more than you, Dad. She looks up at a large building ahead of her, and runs to the front door. 3 INT. NEW YORK HORIZON - NEWSROOM - DAY A bustling daily newspaper. REPORTERS type away at computers, and work the phones. Kerry darts in and weaves through everyone, heading to the CONFERENCE ROOM Where JACQUELINE ROSARIO, 40s, African-American, leads a meeting of REPORTERS. Kerry pops in and sits down. JACQUELINE Alejandra just called. Said ‘you went far beyond the pale attacking a sitting politician running for mayor.’ Kerry is shocked. She’s about to respond - JACQUELINE (CONT’D) Great work. The reporters chuckle. Kerry is happily relieved. JACQUELINE (CONT’D) What’d you nail him for? KERRY Lying about the drug addict assistance pledge. One reporter, BRETT GROVES, 30s, intense, nods at Kerry. BRETT (whispers) Nice. JACQUELINE What else? KERRY What else? He didn’t cover up the Mueller report. JACQUELINE You know there’s more. KERRY And I’ll find it. 4 JACQUELINE Good. The person who replaces Marco as news editor should be able to dig until they find what they’re looking for. Kerry smiles. BRETT And I’ll let you know everything that I find. The room LAUGHS. Kerry and Brett smile at each other. JACQUELINE Good. So what’s this I’m hearing about a swingers club in NYPD? We hear HEAVY BREATHING get louder until - INT. BRETT’S APARTMENT - BEDROOM - DAY Brett’s head falls hard on a pillow on her bed. He EXHALES. Kerry falls on top of him and kisses him. They have sex, going at it like greased weasels. Kerry’s in another world. She tenses up... KERRY Yes! She collapses on top of Brett. Brett pats her shoulder, a little scared. BRETT Where did you go? KERRY Some place really, really nice. She takes a deep breath, kisses Brett, then gets up and puts a T-shirt and jeans on. Brett looks around, confused. BRETT You don’t have to leave. Kerry sits back down on the bed. 5 KERRY What’s the problem? BRETT It’s not a problem. KERRY It’s a problem if you’re thinking it is. You think I’m too cold? No answer from Brett. KERRY (CONT’D) You think I’m only interested in that beautiful dick of yours? BRETT That’s not it - KERRY Just fucking tell me. BRETT Well. It’d be nice if we got to just hang out and enjoy ourselves. KERRY Weren’t you just inside me? BRETT Kerry - KERRY What? BRETT Nothing. I’m good. I just get overemotional sometimes. Kerry stares him down, skeptical. BRETT (CONT’D) I’m glad my beautiful dick made you come so hard. KERRY You’re full of shit. 6 Brett folds his arms. Stonewalls. Kerry smirks. KERRY (CONT’D) Okay then. Kerry stands. Puts her pants and shoes on. Brett sits up. BRETT Lock the door when you leave! Kerry zips out. The door SHUTS. But no locking sound. Brett throws a pillow off the bed, frustrated. INT. RESTAURANT - DAY Kerry and JESSICA BOLES, 30s, bubbly and funny, gobble up omelettes. Two nearly empty champagne glasses sit by them. JESSICA You really need to give him the time of day after you get off him. KERRY He’s fine. JESSICA Five minutes of cuddling is common courtesy. KERRY Well, you’re nicer than me. They clink their glasses. KERRY (CONT’D) And what I’m about to say will confirm that. JESSICA No... KERRY I won’t be able to drive with you to New Orleans. JESSICA Are you serious? You told me six months ago - 7 KERRY I have an incredible opportunity at work. This could be the biggest career jump I’ve ever made. Jessica shovels a bite of omelette in her mouth. JESSICA (mouth full) Not happy. KERRY I’ll come down right after the election. You’ll be moved in, and we can celebrate. JESSICA Very slightly happy. KERRY Drinks on me? JESSICA And promise you’ll give Brett quality time after nailing him. He doesn’t deserve an ice queen. KERRY You sound like his sex therapist. Jessica doesn’t budge. KERRY (CONT’D) Fine. Kerry finishes off her drink. INT. APARTMENT - DAY Kerry unlocks her front door and strolls in. She drops her keys on the counter and heads into the LIVING ROOM Where she falls on the couch and grabs her laptop. As she reads, her cell RINGS. She glances at it, then picks up. 8 KERRY Yes, father. DANIEL (V.O.) Hey, sweetheart. KERRY Last time you called me sweetheart, Uncle Shane was in prison. DANIEL (V.O.) That is true. KERRY What’s he in for this time? DANIEL (V.O.) He’s not. KERRY He get HIV from a bad needle? DANIEL (V.O.) The bad news isn’t about him. KERRY Okay... DANIEL (V.O.) The doctor called an hour ago. Kerry’s eyebrow raises. After a long silence... DANIEL (V.O.) I’ve got a condition. Kerry sits up, nervous. INT. DOCTORS OFFICE - DAY Kerry and Daniel sit in the office of DOCTOR TESSLER, 40s, fatherly. He holds a stack of papers in his hand. Kerry furiously writes in her notebook. 9 DR. TESSLER His Gleason score came back really high, so we got a biopsy done. That’s when we found it. KERRY How advanced is it? DR. TESSLER We’ll know soon. After surgery, there’s a fifty percent chance it won’t spread beyond his prostate.
