07.09 — 10.09 CALVERT 22, E2 7JP SPONSORS / WELCOME / Emerging in 2006 as a passion project amongst creative enthusiasts to commemorate ‘Small Films for Small Screens’ and flour- ishing into an anticipated annual celebration of shorts, we are proudly back for our thirteenth year. As the brainchild of The Smalls company, an international community of 17,000+ filmmakers, our show-stopping admires all matter of diverse and innovative creative mediums across the globe. After the triumph of last year’s “Dimensions of Diversity” theme – high- lighting the essential need for diversity in our collective future – we turn our attention in 2018 to the necessary fight for gender equality. In light of recent times, industry discussion is fixated on the importance of equal rights and here at The Smalls, we are no different. With an equal workforce of men and women, we are utilising our platform to ad- dress pressing matters regarding women’s roles: how can we guarantee women’s voices are being heard, both on our screens and in the film community? The fight begins with honouring their work. “Fighting for 50/50 in Film” introduces a brand new category dedicated to this sole purpose, as we’re intent on creating equal reign in the creative industry. Nurturing and acknowledging those who may previously have been ignored is where the journey begins. With a celebratory screening for each creative contribution followed by a lively Q&A discussion that will be taking place at the Barbican, our event will provide opportunity to discover the creativity and drive behind each visual essay. Championing independent filmmaking and creatives for over a decade, we are cordially inviting you this year to join us in a very important cele- bration: “Fighting for 50/50 Film” both within and outside the film industry.

We pride ourselves on our ability to willingly confront and deconstruct the disparities present in our collective filmmaking community. In 2017, we kicked down the doorway to create a space for discussion on the dimensions of diversity, with the necessary appreciation of artistic tal- ents from across the globe. This year, we proudly continue such trends by focusing our thematic magnifying glass on the gendered nature of the cinematic universe. Whether the polarities between men and women in the creative industry are conscious or subconsciously apparent, their very existence can no longer be denied after the recent media storm. Fuelled by the flame of social media, we witnessed the momentum of hashtag activism in em- powering those whose voices have previously been ignored or denied. Rewriting the dynamics of equality begins with facing the nightmarish realities of our unequal footing, for to achieve gender parity, issues must be tackled and changes must be made. We believe there is power in seeing film differently. Continually evolving and transforming since our creation in 2006, we have pioneered a company that refuses to submit to any finite realities and gendered limitations. Boasting an equal workforce throughout, we are bold in our deconstruction of a rigged system. We begin our fight by championing an equal platform for programming, with women’s narra- tives and creative input being respected and, rewarded in a brand new category. We invite you to visualise a future with a powerful cohabitation of gender dynamics, cutting chords with the disproportion of the past and setting sights on a digital age founded on equal percentages. It is those who interrogate the inequalities of our industry that initiate change, and thus we welcome you in fighting for a 50/50 future in film.
