[SIR HAROLD MACMICHAEL] MURDER! SIR HAROLD MAC MICHAEL, KNOWN AS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR PALESTINE WANTED FOR MURDER OF 800 REFUGEES DROWNED IN THE BLACK SEA ON THE BOAT “STRUMA” Palestine c 1942 Small hand bill 17 x 13 cm. Sir Harold Mac Michael, was the fifth High Commissioner of the British Mandate for Palestine (1938-44). He rigidly implemented the anti-Zionist policy of the 1939 ‘White Paper,’ refusing to admit Jewish refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe to Palestine. The Struma was a ship carrying Jewish refugees from Axis-allied Romania to Mandatory Palestine. The British authorities, led by MacMichael, refused to let it dock in Haifa. On the ship’s return to Europe, it foundered in the Black Sea and nearly 800 Jewish passengers were killed. There was only a single survivor. [ref: 19920 ] £350 2. [ANTI-SEMITISM] CAPP, AL - HENRY EDWARD SCHULTZ, HERMAN WOUK. - MAMMY YOKUM AND THE DOGPATCH MYSTERY New York Anti-Defamation League of the Bnai Brith 1956 Original wrappers, 26cm, 17 un-numbered pages mostly cartoons, there is a foreword by Henry Edward Schultz, the National Chairman of the Anti-Defamation League of the Bnai Brith. Postscript by Herman Wouk, the Pulitzer Prize winning novelist. This comic book reprints a fable about prejudice and racial harmony by Al Capp. The story first appeared in Capp's L'il Abner comic strip. It was printed and distributed by the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith. When a family with square eyes moves into Dogpatch, the round-eyed residents form a mob to drive the newcomers away. When one of the square-eyed children is hurt, Mammy Yokum discovers that what she has in common with the new folks is more important than their differences. She stops the mob and helps her neighbors get to know the new family. Mammy Yokum declares, "We is all square shooters, so we gotta give them folks wif th' square eyes a square deal!! Th' l'il diff'runces between folks shouldn't hide th' big things thass th' same 'bout all of us!!" [ref: 19918 ] £300 3. PHOTO ALBUM RELATING TO THE SS BEN HECHT [ABRIL] - ALIYAH B. Illegal immigrants circa 1947. 38x32cm This album was compiled by a student who travelled to the USA to go to UCLA. He left from Haifa in March 1947. Includes photographs of the crew of the Arbil [renamed the SS Ben Hecht]. It is unclear what the connection the student had to the SS Ben Hecht. Hecht wrote the script for the Bergson Group's production of A Flag is Born,[see next item] which opened on September 5, 1946 at the Alvin Playhouse in New York City. The play, which compared the Zionist underground's campaign in Palestine to the American Revolution, was intended to increase public support for the Zionist cause in the United States. The play starred Marlon Brando and Paul Muni during its various productions. The proceeds from the play [$400,000] were used to purchase a ship [Arbil] that was renamed the SS Ben Hecht, which transported Holocaust survivors to Palestine in March 1947. The Royal Navy captured the ship after it docked, and 600 of its passengers were detained as illegal immigrants and sent to the Cyprus internment camps. The SS Ben Hecht later became the flagship of the Israeli Navy. The crew was imprisoned by the British authorities in Acre Prison, and assisted in the preparations for the Acre Prison break. One the crew was Walter Cushenberry. Tall, 33 years old, originally from Mayfield, Kentucky, he was living in Brooklyn at the time he volunteered for the voyage. Berkovits, who became particularly friendly with Cushenberry, remembered: "As a Black man, he knew what it was like to be kicked around, and he didn't like seeing the Jews get kicked around." Captain Levitan described him as "one of the gentlest men you could ever meet, and he just liked helping out the underdog. The Abril sailed, December 27, 1946, for Southern France and Port du Bouc. March 1, 1947, she left France for Palestine. Her decks were crammed with over 600 Holocaust survivors eagerly looking eastward. While at sea, the Abril was renamed the S.S. Ben Hecht. Seven days later, March 8, she was spotted by British reconnaissance aircraft. British destroyers intercepted the Ben Hecht. She was boarded, impounded and towed to Haifa under British control. The refugees were sent to the prison camps in Cyprus. The American crew was arrested and sent to the infamous Acre Prison. "Dealing with the American crewmen, however, was more complicated. While the British government pondered their fate, Cushenberry and the rest of the crew were taken to the Acre Prison fortress, where they were jailed alongside members of the Irgun Zvai Leumi underground militia. The album contains about 166 photographs in total. The album starts with him leaving Haifa and the journey to the USA there are 19 photographs of the crew of the SS Ben Hecht. He arrived in NY on April 16th 1947. There are some photographs of NY, his trip across the USA to California and finally photographs of UCLA. [ref: 19219 ] £850 4. A sorry account of the collapse of traditional Jewish life among New York’s immigrants. The Hungarian-born author records the fact that in a city of 100,000 Jews and 130 Orthodox congregations, there are to be found no more than three or four bona fide halachic experts, whereas there are hundreds of “darshanim” or preachers of homiletics (p. 4). However, Weinberger notes the opening of Yeshivath Eitz Chaim, an institution he feels to be well equipped to instill a sense of faith and learning into its charges. Eitz Chaim was the seed which, upon amalgamation with the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Seminary, became New York’s Yeshiva University. See S. • Loving the Convert Prior to a Completed Conversion: with a Test Case Application of Inviting Conversion Candidates to Pesach Seder and Yom Tov Meals
147 Loving the Convert Prior to a Completed Conversion: With a Test Case Application of Inviting Conversion Candidates to Pesach Seder and Yom Tov Meals By: MICHAEL J. BROYDE and BENJAMIN J. SAMUELS Introduction The Torah enjoins us numerous times concerning the mitzvah of Ahavat ha-Ger,1 which literally means the love of the stranger or sojourner, though is primarily understood in Jewish legal sources to refer more specifically to loving the convert to Judaism.2 Furthermore, the Torah commands us that “you shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18), and also charges us to love God (Deuteronomy 6:4), creating multiple duties of love as halakhic obligations. This article will explore the question: When does the duty to love the convert commence and does it impact the con- version process? Does it apply only to a newly converted Jew, or to a Noahide who is in the process of converting, or even to a Gentile who has expressed an interest in converting? The process of conversion to Judaism can be divided into three fun- damental stages: In the first stage, the person makes a personal decision 1 See Leviticus 19:34; Deuteronomy 10:18-19. The Torah also prohibits oppress- ing the convert, “lo toneh” and “Lo tonu”—see Exodus 22:20; Leviticus 19:33; TB Bava Metzia 58b, 59b, and Ben Zion Katz, “Don’t Oppress the Ger,” Seforim Blog <https://seforimblog.com/2019/07/dont-oppress-the-ger/>. However, this article will not investigate the question of when the prohibition against oppressing a convert begins, which may or may not track in parallel with the mitzvah of Ahavat ha-Ger.

  • British Mandate By: Rabbi Jeremy Rosen
British Mandate by: Rabbi Jeremy Rosen Whether it is in drama, journalism, or academia, there are always subjective and different ways of examining historical events. A new Channel 4 series The Promise, by Peter Kosminsky, illustrates once again the deception and dishonesty of presenting only one side of a story. The series purports to objectively illustrate how so many British soldiers, seeing at first hand in Europe the result of what the Germans perpetrated against the Jews, came to Palestine to serve in the British Mandate Army, imbued with a pro-Jewish feeling, a sense that the Jews deserved a refuge–but the actions of the wicked Zionists turned them against the Jews and left them feeling completely on the Arab side. So here is another point of view. And if you doubt my objectivity I refer you to Conor Cruise O’Brien’s The Siege for a disinterested perspective. When I first went to Israel as a teenager in 1956, I remember vividly how surprised I was when I encountered so much ill feeling and resentment towards the British Mandate. I was made to feel that being British was an embarrassment. It is not as though I did not know about the history of the British Mandate. Britain had captured the Middle East from the Turks in the First World War. The Balfour Declaration had promised a homeland for the Jews in their ancestral lands, but the interests of the Arab population had to be preserved. When Britain was granted the mandate in 1922, the first High Commissioner, Sir Herbert Samuel, a Jew, succeeded in alienating everyone.

Khoury Associate Professor of History and International Affairs For my parents, Pamela and Stephen, and for my sister, Jennifer… who remind me every day to seek out “story potential.” ii Acknowledgements I am endlessly indebted to my brilliant committee members. Dina Khoury first introduced me to memory studies at the beginning of my graduate career and I would not have finished this process without her guidance, enthusiasm and advice. Many thanks to Walter Reich for all his anecdotes and legends that never appeared in the history books, and for calming me down when the work seemed overwhelming. Every young woman graduate student should be lucky enough to have a role model like Hope Harrison, who first introduced me to the twin joys of contemporary Holocaust memory and spargel season in Berlin. I have been deeply privileged to have these three scholars as readers and advisers for this thesis. Also from the GWU History Department I would like to thank Leo Ribuffo, who taught the first history class of my undergraduate career and inspired me to stay for another eight years. Director Geri Rypkema of the Office of Graduate Assistantships and Fellowships has been a wonderful supervisor and friend through much of my graduate career.

  • GSC Films: S-Z
GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything.

  • Shabbat in Outer Space Astronaut Ilan Ramon’S Question: “When Should I Observe Shabbat on the Columbia?” Shabbat 69B
Haya Mehalech Bamidbar - Teacher’s Guide 1 Thinking Gemara Series: Haya Mehalech Bamidbar Haya Mehalech Bamidbar Shabbat in Outer Space Astronaut Ilan Ramon’s question: “When Should I Observe Shabbat on the Columbia?” Shabbat 69b Teacher’s Guide Colonel Ilan Ramon, of blessed memory, posed the following halachic question to Rabbi Tzvi Konikov, the rabbi of Cape Canaveral: When should I observe Shabbat while I am on the space shuttle Columbia? The forty-eight year old Ramon was a veteran Israeli fighter pilot before he was picked to be Israel’s first astronaut. Ramon, whose father was a German refugee who fought in Israel’s War of Independence, and whose mother was an Auschwitz survivor, brought on board the shuttle a miniature Torah scroll that had made its way to Israel from the Nazi concentration camps. Since Ilan Ramon considered himself to be representing the Jewish people and Israel, he asked NASA to provide him with kosher food during the flight, and arranged to keep the Sabbath while in orbit. Though the question of when to keep Shabbat in space had been the topic of theoretical discourse since the 1960s, Ilan Ramon was the first Jew in world history to ask it halachah lema’aseh, with an eye to applying it as practical halachah. The Space Coast, Florida rabbi posed the question to some leading halachic authorities, including Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Halperin, the director of Jerusalem’s Institute for Science and Halacha.
