  • GSC Films: S-Z
GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything.

  • The SS Ben Hecht
1 The S.S. Ben Hecht "The Mandate of Conscience" By Judith Rice Ben Hecht1 S.S. Ben Hecht shadowed by the British Navy She is the last ship afloat; the last man standing from the fight. She was the ship of the outcasts, the rejected, the despised. Jewish leadership, afraid to disturb, he cried out for the dying. The Aliyah Bet veterans are almost all gone now, passing under the grey waves of lapping history and forgetfulness. Peter Bergson & 1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Hecht 2 Ben Hecht’s struggle to save Jewish lives is still deliberately obscured, to protect the ethos, the myths of Jewish/Zionist leadership. As the blackening blood colored clouds of the coming Holocaust gathered before 1939, Europe’s Jews were desperate for refuge. No one wanted Jews, not even America. The famed words of the Jewish poetess Emma Lazarus2 on the Statue of Liberty in New York’s harbor, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest- tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" were meaningless. The American lamp was not lit for European Jewry. The door was tightly closed. The only place that did want them was the promised Jewish national home in Palestine, the Palestine of the Balfour Declaration3. The League of Nations4 British Mandate for Palestine envisioned for possible Jewish settlement encompassed 43,000 square miles. The size of the Jewish national home was massively reduced in 1922. Winston Churchill signed the severance of 32,500 square miles from the Palestine Mandate area.

1 Ben Hecht 1 The S.S. Ben Hecht By Judith Rice [Editorial note: following are selected parts from J. Rice’s original article The S.S. Ben Hecht - "The Mandate of Conscience" . Only the parts that are directly related to the story of the S.S. Ben Hecht are presented here; the full article was published in the June 2010 Edition of the Jewish Magazine, see www.Jashp.org] S.S. Ben Hecht shadowed by the British Navy Hillel Kook 2 was born in Lithuania in 1915, the son of Rabbi Dov Kook, the younger brother of Abraham Isaac Kook, the first Ashkenazi chief rabbi of the British Mandate in Palestine. In 1924, his family immigrated to Palestine, where his father became the first Chief Rabbi of Afula. Kook joined the pre- 2 state Haganah militia in 1930 following widespread Arab riots. In 1931, Kook helped found the Irgun, a group of militant Haganah dissidents, and fought with them in Palestine through most of the 1930s. He served as a post commander in 1936, and eventually became a member of the Irgun General Headquarters. In 1937 Kook began his career as an international spokesperson for the Irgun and Revisionist Zionism. He first went to Poland, where he was involved in fundraising and establishing Irgun cells in Eastern Europe. It was there that he met the founder of the Revisionist movement, Ze'ev Jabotinsky, and became friends with his son Ari. At the founders' request, Kook traveled to the United States with Jabotinsky in 1940, where he soon served as the head of the Irgun and Revisionist mission in America, following the elder's sudden death in August.

  • EXTRA! EXTRA! EXTRA! Yiddish Survives the Millennium!
January2000 Vol 10 No.1 EXTRA! EXTRA! EXTRA! Yiddish Survives the Millennium! Despite the vocalized nay-sayers of academia, our beloved mame-los-hn is thriving. There is a slight resurgence in Israel, the former USSR and even in the United States. There are an increasing number of colleges with Yiddish courses. There is the growth of the National Yiddish Book Center, and the increase of Yiddish conferences, institutes and festivals. We have the founding of our International Association of Yiddish Clubs, and the increase in Klezmer groups. All of this doesn't take into account the vast usage of Yiddish among the Haredi. Yiddish is alive and well!! One of the major reasons for the continued interest in Yiddish in outlying areas is the wonderful ability to communicate over the World Wide Web. Mendele, the #1 Yiddish list online, has over-2,000 members all over-the world. Having access to the highest levels of academia and being:able to ask questions makes this the true frontier-of Yiddish world-wide. Several Yiddishists stand out in the forefront of this Yiddish, cyberspace revolution. Notable among this young:group are; Iosif Vaisman, the primary moderator of the Mendele List, Mark David, who mns the-UYIP, and Rafoyel Finkel, whose web site is one of the very best. To this list must be added the wonderful work of the Paris-based newsletters and web site -truly gems. Der Bay is an acronym for Bay Area Yiddish, and starts its 10th year of continuous publication. Its growth in numbers and services are totally due to your support.

Sir Harold Mac Michael, was the fifth High Commissioner of the British Mandate for Palestine (1938-44). The Struma was a ship carrying Jewish refugees from Axis-allied Romania to Mandatory Palestine. The British authorities, led by MacMichael, refused to let it dock in Haifa. • YIDDISH ART THEATER/YIDDISH FOLKS THEATER) BUILDING, 181-189 Second Avenue, Manhattan
Landmarks Preservation Commission February 9, 1993; Designation List 249 LP-1764 LOUIS N. JAFFE ART THEATER (YIDDISH ART THEATER/YIDDISH FOLKS THEATER) BUILDING, 181-189 Second Avenue, Manhattan. Built 1925-26; architect Harrison G. Wiseman. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 467, Lot 31. On December 12, 1989, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Yiddish Art Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 28). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. A representative of the owner and lessee appeared and stated that they were not opposed to the designation. Three speakers testified in favor of designation. The Commission had previously received letters in support of this designation. 1 DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS Summary The Louis N. Jaffe Art Theater (Yiddish Art Theater/Yiddish Folks Theater) Building, designed by the prolific theater architect Harrison G. Wiseman, was constructed in 1925-26 for Louis N. Jaffe, a Brooklyn lawyer and prominent Jewish civic leader, who intended it as a permanent home for the Yiddish Art Theater, one of the leading Yiddish "art theater" companies, under the direction of preeminent Yiddish actor Maurice Schwartz. Although the Yiddish Art Theater company performed in the Jaffe Art Theater for only four seasons, this theater remained a Yiddish playhouse (most often as the Yiddish Folks Theater) nearly the entire time between its opening in 1926 and 1945, and was also the site of Yiddish theater revival productions in the 1970s and '80s. The Jaffe Art Theater Building is one of the most tangible reminders of the heyday of Yiddish theater in New York City in the early twentieth century, particularly along the "Yiddish Rialto" of lower Second Avenue, when this form of entertainment was a significant part of the rich cultural heritage of the Jewish Lower East Side of Manhattan.
