Issue No. 155 Girlguiding Sussex Central Newsletter June 2015 Newsletter June 2015 County President I am pleased to say that the sun is shining as I write this Mrs Sylvia Smith MBE and I hope it continues! I know many of you will be making the most of the lighter evenings, getting out and about, enjoying the surrounding countryside, and County Commissioner Mrs Deborah Phillips getting involved in outdoor activities. ccgirlguidingsussexcentral Some of you will be taking your units away and the girls @gmail.com will enjoy their sleepovers, camps and residential events. These are such wonderful opportunities for the County Secretary girls, a chance to take part in new activities, enjoy time Mrs Lisa Barden together and make new friends. I am sure we can all remember our times away with our units, I have many fond memories of my days at Guide camp and you are all giving these girls those opportunities to create their own memories. Enjoy the time, whether you are staying within the County or going further afield. I hope all those Trefoil Guild members making the trip to Waddow have a lovely time and hope the sun shines for you! For the girls who enjoy being on the water, as always there are courses to take part in and two regatta days of canoeing fun at Southwater Country Park. The girls have an amazing time and our thanks go to the many organisers and helpers at the events. It is a busy term for the County and I hope to see a lot of you at our various events. Our weekend at Foxlease is a great opportunity not only to gain from our trainings, but a chance to chat and exchange ideas with other Leaders from around the County. I hope we are lucky again with the weather at our County Social. This year we are holding it at Little Trees as the site will be closing at the end of the year. Crawley Inside this issue: Division are, however, planning their new site in Tilgate Park and it is a very exciting time for them. Message from Deborah 1 I am also looking forward to our County Brownie Fun Day where over 500 Brownies from Trefoil Guild News 2 JoinUs around the County will be meeting at Blackland Farm for an exciting day of activities. Thanks to Val and her planning team who are busy organising this event. County Associates 3 County Awards 4-5 Last year we held our first Celebration of Achievements Evening for those girls who had Subs & Go! 6 gained their Queen’s Guide Award, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (through Girlguiding), Young Leader Qualification or Baden-Powell Challenge Award in the year. We also had a Division News 7-17 recipient of our County Young Person’s award. It was a very successful evening, so we County Diary 18 are repeating the event this year and I look forward to meeting the girls, their guests and their Leaders. It is a lovely way to acknowledge their achievement and hard work Roll of Honour 19 and to thank the Leaders and County Co-ordinators for all the support they give the girls. As always a big thank you for the time, enthusiasm and hard work you all put in to guiding in Sussex Central, without you the girls wouldn’t be having all these opportunities and FUN! Have a great summer. 1 Issue No. 155 Girlguiding Sussex Central Newsletter June 2015 Sussex Central Trefoil Guilds continue to hold their monthly meetings with various activities. There have been some changes of chairperson following the annual meetings. Sussex Central held their Annual Meeting in April, which was supported by 60 members, the Region Chair, our County President – who renewed her Promise as a Trefoil member, our County Commissioner, Division Commissioners and neighbouring County Trefoil Chairs. The song “This Little Guiding Light of Mine” was sang at appropriate points during the meeting and members held battery candles. Guilds reported on a different/favourite meet- ing during the year. The afternoon concluded with a cream tea, raffle, and an inspiring epilogue followed by “Taps” and “Go Well and Safely.” The County Trefoil holiday to Waddow was successful – 36 went and 36 came back! We had a fun filled, varied week. Waddow was a perfect guiding house for a holiday. There are lots of summery meetings and friendly events for the ACTIVE County Guild, to which EVERYONE is welcome: Croquet at Nymans on Wednesday 10th June, Trail Walk at East Grinstead on Thursday 2nd July. Jane Brown County Trefoil GuildChair Join Us The long awaited merge of the two waiting lists, “Waiting to Transfer” on GO! and “Waiting to Join” on JoinUs has now happened. You will have seen details in your e-letter from CHQ. But just to go quickly through: On your “Girl Enquiries”, looking at the first line (in Blue) choose reports. This brings up another line of tabs (in Pink) choose “Waiting List Report” and all should be revealed to you. At the moment I cannot help much than this, as you can see from the screen print my Unit doesn’t have anyone to show on this report, but hopefully I shall be able to find answers if you have any queries. So please do get in touch with me if necessary. 2 Pam Brakes County Join Us Co-ordinator Issue No. 155 Girlguiding Sussex Central Newsletter June 2015 Thank You from County Associates County Associates (the clever idea of Judy Fuller) is to close after 21 years. This is sad but inevitable as we all grow older or are still involved with guiding in some other way. Betty, Pam, Sylvia and Sue have worked really hard over the years to keep us interested and in contact with each other after retiring from our roles. Sylvia and Allan have held a tea party in their garden every year. Some of us have increasingly felt guilty to see Allan and Sylvia going to and fro with kettles, extension leads and all the paraphernalia of setting up a party outdoors up a slope to a lawn 100yds away from the house. They both, as excellent hosts, have had all the worry and planning of this lovely social event, whilst we just turn up and enjoy without much effort ourselves. Of course they have had the help of the committee, for which we are very appreciative. We will all still meet at different occasions around the County but this is the end of something special and we are, I am sure, both very grateful but sad. Thank you from us all. 3 Issue No. 155 Girlguiding Sussex Central Newsletter June 2015 Girlguiding Sussex Central Awards Have you ever looked at a badge or brooch that someone is wearing and wondered what it is? Well it may be a guiding award and in Sussex Central we are keen that those who give their time and their skills to guiding are recognised. Most of you will be aware of the long service awards which are given after 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 & 50 years’ service. However there are other awards given in recognition of particular service. The Awards committee has recently introduced 2 new awards and we thought it would be helpful for you all to know about the various awards. All nominations should be made confidentially. The nominee should not be alerted to the fact that the nomination is being made. Any member can nominate someone for an award. Guidance on the application process can be obtained from your Commissioner and can also be found on the County website. Awards for Young People Sussex Central Young Person’s Award for a member under 18 for service showing outstanding courage in the face of adversity. Nominations from the unit leader with a supporting letter from one other person are made to the Awards Committee who will make the decision on the award. Before arrangements are made for the presentation the unit leader should liaise with the parent/carer. The Guiding Star Award is a national award given to any member of Girlguiding (up to their 26th birthday) who has displayed exceptional courage or who has shown great initiative or responsibility. Nominations should be accompanied by the young person’s GO record and letters of recommendation. The Awards Committee will consider the nomination and if it meets the criteria will submit it to Region from where it will go to the National Awards Committee. Full details of this award can be found on the Girlguiding website www.girlguiding.org.uk (Members area>the Guiding manual>supporting information>thanks and recognition) Awards for Adults – Sussex Central Thanks Certificate- Given to any member or non-member, either by Districts or Divisions, in appreciation of a one off service locally.
