The logic for choosing the first editions lies in the project’s historicist approach and in its frequent concern with biographical details surrounding the original publication. In the interest of biographical accuracy, however, this study takes care to flag up any important changes made from earlier versions, for example holograph and serialised forms, to first editions (usually in volume form) that might further illuminate the findings of this study. As the project is also interested in perceptual changes over the course of the author’s life, it pinpoints any relevant subsequent revisions in later editions of the novels. Instead, my project focuses on the entanglement of Wessex with overseas imperial spaces, arguing for multiple, varied and, more importantly, deeply uneven forms of contact with the empire in the fiction. It explores the particular linkages in Hardy’s texts between empire and the tripartite class structure (upper, middle and lower) that, as Hardy critic Roger Ebbatson has argued, became ‘progressively stabilised’ in Britain following the industrial and agricultural revolutions. I identify a shift in Hardy’s fiction from elite- to labour-focused conceptions of empire. Whereas in the early fiction (1871-1882), India and Africa are more prominent imperial destinations for overseas movement, in later works (1883-1897), the settler regions of empire, including Canada, New Zealand, Brazil and Australia, become principal areas of relocation for Wessex emigrants and exiles. A cultural materialist approach is employed to explore this shift. To that end, I avoid reading the presence of empire in Hardy’s fiction through allegorical strategies that create congruence or equivalence between gender, class and colonial oppressions. Each of the core chapters pivots around the imperial aspirations, interests, predicaments and perils of a different representative class. I demonstrate that each of the classes can be identified with a different imperial frontier in Hardy’s fiction. In addition, correlations are drawn between the presence of a given frontier and Hardy’s own specific location within the tripartite class structure. Chapter Two, the first of the project’s core chapters, considers how the relocation of the lower middle classes to India, including ambitions to achieve social mobility and prosperity, connects with Hardy’s own drive in the early fiction to secure an independent income. Chapter Three makes links between upper-class adventure, big-game hunting and the pursuit of imperial celebrity in the African interior and Hardy’s own efforts to introduce ‘fashionable’ spaces into the middle fiction. Chapter Four argues for indissoluble ties between the plights of rural working-class emigration to, and often return from, the settler regions of the empire and the author’s growing antipathy for ‘the business of social advancement’, relocation to his native Dorchester and consequent full immersion in local histories. Despite the changing emphasis on social class and imperial frontier during each of the three core phases (early, middle and late) in Hardy’s prose years and an evident preoccupation with both elite and labour frontiers across those phases, the thesis maintains that the kind of critique that emerges throughout is working-class in orientation. In other words, all works ultimately challenge, through a range of formal devices, the exploitation of empire in order to oppress or deracinate class and gender. Out of these two principal points of dissent emerge other vital working-class critiques that ultimately humanise and affirm native colonial cultures and practices. The project strives to engage and influence two strands of criticism. It aims to contest notions of global ‘interconnectedness’ across Wessex and the empire in Hardy studies.     Thomas Hardy and His Readers: Contradictions of the Rebellious Serial Writer Adelina Sánchez Espinosa The ambiguous relationship established between Thomas Hardy and his readers marked the three decades in which his career as a novelist took place. Looking into this aspect is essential if we want to fully comprehend his novels. We can approach this rapport in two different manners: one way is to attend to what Hardy himself have to say about his novels in their prefaces; the other leads us to a tracing of the differences between the serial publication of each one of the novels and their final publication in volume form. Such differences respond to Hardy's editing, revising and deleting material from the original manuscripts when it came to serial publication in family magazines followed by a persistent attempt to reconstruct his original intentions when it eventually came to the volume publications. Such cutting and pasting operations could only result in contradictory versions of the same novel, as can easily be appreciated when comparing the serial versions of his novels with the final volume versions, something we can now do thanks to the fundamental scholarship by earlier textual critics such as R.L. Purdy, F. B. Pinion and John Paterson in the 1950s and 60s and the later seminal studies by John Laird, Patricia Ingham and Rosemarie Morgan on Tess, Jude and Far respectively. As a writer of books, Hardy experiments with these questions in his novels, placing the Victorian love-plot at the center of conversations about the (un)importance of humankind and a rapidly changing world. I suggest that Hardy’s recycling of narrative structures, both where he borrows plots or characters from medieval sources and where he repeats scenes across his own novels, is a form of experimentation; Hardy is testing the bounds and limitations of Victorian ways of thought.     Sendai Shirayuri Women's College Reappraisal of Thomas Hardy’s Earlier Novels YOSHINO Satoko Introduction Thomas Hardy’s novels have inspired a massive body of criticism and analysis, but almost all of which has been devoted to his ‘major novels’, such as The Return of the Native, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, Jude the Obscure and so on. Among his fourteen novels Hardy’s earlier works, especially his first novel Desperate Remedies and the third one, A Pair of Blue Eyes have been consistently undervalued and neglected. Only Under the Greenwood Tree, the second published work has an established value as a ‘pastoral romance’, but it still is ‘very slight and rather unexciting’.1 Each work has merits and defects. Yet a reading of these works as a whole can reveal the unity and consistency of Hardy’s art and his fictional world. They should deserve a fuller and more sympathetic reading than they have conventionally been accorded. So this study pro- poses a reappraisal of these Hardy’s earlier and ‘lesser’ novels, Desperate Remedies, Under the Greenwood Tree and A Pair of Blue Eyes, and it also does aim to be a contribution towards their reevaluation. If we can discover and enjoy the individual delights which they have to offer, this paper will have served its purpose. Desperate Remedies is Hardy’s first published novel. He completed this work in the spring of 1870, and it was sent to Macmillan and Co. which was the most distinguished and successful publishing house of the time. This story includes impersonation, illegitimacy and murder, and is concerned with barriers of social class.

That portrait of his sitting and contemplating his mother's chair, or fingering a lock of Eustacia's hair, shows a man more content with symbols than longing for tangibles. Alone in his dark house through which the sounds of life can only filter through, or on the Barrow at a distance from the people to whom he preaches, he is like so many of Joyce's Dubliners a study in stasis. In his resolve to preach only on "morally unimpeachable subjects" (p. 485) which will involve him in no controversy, he is a man whose body may move from place to place, but whose soul remains stationary. Unlike Lawrence's Paul Morel who chooses life in the end, or even Gerald erich who elects death, Clym is life-in-death - a tragic example to Hardy of the family trap. It is now well-known that the book was the result of George Mere­ dith's admonition to "write a story with a plot," and critics in the nineteenth as well as the twentieth century agree that Hardy was eminently successful in following Meredith's advice.
