Sadly OverlookedBy Bill R. MooreTwo on a Tower is among Thomas Hardy's least known novels, and though not in his top tier, is excellent and would be nearly anyone else's best. It certainly deserves a far wider readership, as it has both many usual strengths and is in several ways unique, making it worthwhile for both fans and others.The main unique factor is the astronomy focus. Hardy had significant interest in and knowledge of astronomy, which pops up in his work here and there, but only Two deals with it extensively. The main male character is an astronomer, and the field gets considerable attention; readers can learn a fair amount about it from Two, as there are many technical terms, historical references, and other descriptions. The focus is indeed so strong that Two might almost be called proto-science fiction; astronomy is not integral to the plot, but its background importance is very high. Hardy was no scientist but researched extensively, taking great pains to be accurate, and it shows. -

humanities Article Folklore and the Hebrew Bible: Interdisciplinary Engagement and New Directions Susan Niditch Department of Religion, Amherst College, Amherst, MA 01002, USA; [email protected] Received: 16 November 2017; Accepted: 1 January 2018; Published: 10 January 2018 Abstract: This essay explores the rich interactions between the fields of folklore and biblical studies over the course of the 20th century until the present. The essay argues for the continued relevance of folklore and related fields to an appreciation of ancient Israelite cultures and their artistic inventions. It concludes with several case studies that underscore the fruitful realizations that emerge from this sort of interdisciplinary humanistic work. Keywords: form-criticism; oral tradition; formula; morphology; typology; social context; performance 1. Introduction The fields of biblical studies and folklore studies have always shared much in terms of content and methodology. Readers of the Hebrew Bible encounter narratives about the exploits of heroes and the creation of the world, they find descriptions of ritual actions rich in symbolic media, saying forms akin to proverbs and riddles, and verbal repetitions of various kinds betokening formulaic and traditional styles of speech—a corpus richly suggestive of folklore. Biblicists’ interests in life settings, prosody, literary forms, reception, and redaction in many ways, moreover, parallel those of folklorists who emphasize performance contexts and cultural settings, the texture, content, and structures of various folk genres, the significance of these aspects of genre for an appreciation of message, and the importance of developments in stories and other media across time and place. The scholarly interrelationship between the study of the Hebrew Bible and folklore studies has a long, complicated history. -

Analyse how Frankenstein and Blade Runner imaginatively portray individuals who challenge the established values of their times. Mary Shelley’s epistolary gothic novel Frankenstein and Ridley Scott’s 1994 seminal science fiction film Blade Runner both, despite their vastly contexts imaginatively examine the fundamental nature of what it means to be human as they challenge the established views of their times. These cautionary tales warn us of the dangers of the unethical pursuit power through scientific advancement, man’s fear of mortality and the destruction of the natural world. In Frankenstein, The Modern Prometheus Mary Shelley challenges the 19th Century view that the power of science alone will advance the quality of human existence through the character of Victor. Shelley was a key figure in Romantic literary movement and Frederic Schlegel defined Romanticism as “literature depicting emotional matter in an imaginative form” and dark Romanticism became a sub-genre known as Gothic. Victor, an archetypal Gothic character, is propelled to scientific endeavour to attain personal grandeur through sinister means. He reveals Shelly’s underlying fears as seen when he states with overwrought emotive language and personal pronouns, "I believed myself destined for some great enterprise”. He reinforces his selfish motives through high modality in the lines “Wealth was an inferior object; but what glory would attend the discovery”, emphasising his desire for immortal fame. His egotism is highlighted through verb usage when he claims grandiosely “I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation” reflecting the themes of dark Romanticism. -

Jones: Tess of the d'Urbervilles and the "New Edition" of Desperate Reme Tess of the d'Urbervilles and the "New Edition" of Desperate Remedies by LAWRENCE JONES N THE autumn of 1884, Thomas Hardy was approached by the re I cently established publishing firm of Ward and Downey concerning the republication of his first novel, Desperate Remedies. Although it had been published in America by Henry Holt in his Leisure Hour series in 1874, the novel had not appeared in England since the first, anony mous publication by Tinsley Brothers in 1871. That first edition, in three volumes, had consisted of a printing of 500 (only 280 of which had been sold at list price). 1 Since that time Hardy had published eight more novels and had established himself to the extent that Charles Kegan Paul could refer to him in the British Quarterly Review in 1881 as the true "successor of George Eliot," 2 and Havelock Ellis could open a survey article in the Westminster Review in 1883 with the remark that "The high position which the author of Far from the Madding Crowd holds among contemporary English novelists is now generally recognized." 3 As his reputation grew, his earlier novels were republished in England in one-volume editions: Far from the Madding Crowd, A Pair of Blue Eyes, and The Hand ofEthelberta in 1877, Under the Greenwood Tree in 1878, The Return of the Native in 1880, A Laodicean in 1882, and Two on a Tower in 1883. -

Through a detailed examination of the literary encounters with invisibility in pivotal American ghost stories from the end of the twentieth century, the project considers the rich literary trope of ghostly haunting according to its capacity to provoke an engagement with marginalized, liminal spaces. In traditional ghost stories, however, as ghosts are ultimately overcome and order is restored, normative structures resume, and such engagements are trivialized. -

In diagnosing the case, he is not much concerned with the surface of things, but is more interested in probing far below the surface to find the force behind them. Since this force in his novels is always Fate, and since he is always certain to make things end tragi cally, the writer of this study will attempt to show that he well deserves the name, "pessimist." In this study the writer will attempt to analyze Hardy1 s novels in order to ascertain the nature of his pessimism, as well as point out the techniques by which pessimism is evinced in his novels. PRIVILEGED ATTORNEY-CLIENT COMMUNICATION EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SECOND AMENDED AND RESTATED LICENSE AGREEMENT (“SPIDER-MAN”) CREATIVE ISSUES This memo summarizes certain terms of the Second Amended and Restated License Agreement (“Spider-Man”) between SPE and Marvel, effective September 15, 2011 (the “Agreement”). 1. CHARACTERS AND OTHER CREATIVE ELEMENTS: a. Exclusive to SPE: . The “Spider-Man” character, “Peter Parker” and essentially all existing and future alternate versions, iterations, and alter egos of the “Spider- Man” character. All fictional characters, places structures, businesses, groups, or other entities or elements (collectively, “Creative Elements”) that are listed on the attached Schedule 6. All existing (as of 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that are “Primarily Associated With” Spider-Man but were “Inadvertently Omitted” from Schedule 6. The Agreement contains detailed definitions of these terms, but they basically conform to common-sense meanings. If SPE and Marvel cannot agree as to whether a character or other creative element is Primarily Associated With Spider-Man and/or were Inadvertently Omitted, the matter will be determined by expedited arbitration. All newly created (after 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that first appear in a work that is titled or branded with “Spider-Man” or in which “Spider-Man” is the main protagonist (but not including any team- up work featuring both Spider-Man and another major Marvel character that isn’t part of the Spider-Man Property). The origin story, secret identities, alter egos, powers, costumes, equipment, and other elements of, or associated with, Spider-Man and the other Creative Elements covered above. The story lines of individual Marvel comic books and other works in which Spider-Man or other characters granted to SPE appear, subject to Marvel confirming ownership. -
