Sonatine is easier than some of his other works, such as , and Ravel who was anxious about his skills as a pianist probably performed it because of this. He did not, however, perform the third movement, as it was technically challenging for him. Carlos Salzedo transcribed Sonatine for flute, harp and cello or viola , titling the transcription Sonatine en Trio. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Mouvement de menuet. In addition, while Ravel recorded a piano roll of the first two movements, he felt unable to play the technical third movement and frequently left it out while playing concerts in America in the late s. The opening theme of the first movement is subject to variations and transformations in the second and third movements, especially the opening 'falling fourth' motif, which is reversed into a series of ascending fourth 'horn calls' at the start of the third movement. The first movement is in sonata-allegro form and echoes of the following transformations can already be heard in the final bars. The second minuet movement lacks the traditional trio section, in keeping with the shortened form of the Sonatine. While it is structurally based on the minuet, Ravel's use of accents and changes in tempo stop the movement from turning into a simple waltz. The third movement is a highly technical piece and has been described as a virtuosic tour de force. Reception for the Ravel's Sonatine has been mixed but generally positive. Marcel Marnat wrote that the Sonatine captivates from the very first measure in its depth, [ 4 ] adding that in its concision and radiance, it is one of Ravel's defining works. In contrast, Arbie Orenstein has written that while the Sonatine is pleasant enough, it does not compare to the later . One notable arrangement known as Sonatine en Trio of Ravel's Sonatine is for flute, harp and cello or viola and. This arrangement was done by Carlos Salzedo and is well known among harpists and many other classical musicians. Ravel seems to have greatly valued the Sonatine because he kept including the clearly and almost classically structured work in his own concert programs. This name will appear next to your review. The first movement is in F-sharp natural minor Aeolian mode and is a sonata-allegro form. The Sonatine is a cyclical work that uses a descending perfect fourth F-sharp—C-sharp and its inversion, the perfect fifth, as a recurring motive. The opening theme of the first movement is transformed in the two subsequent movements——a technique refined by Liszt, whom Ravel greatly admired for that compositional device as well as for his virtuosity c. The internal accompaniment should be kept quiet and not allowed to "run away. Ravel frequently instructed pianists to make a short break at the end of the main theme in measures 3 and 61 and again in measure 28 just before the repeat. I have added commas to reinforce his wishes. He often said that his indications should be strictly observed. Especially important are the accented upbeats that begin on the F-sharp at the end of measures 3 and 5, and also 61 and 63, on the F- sharp in measures 26 and 28 within the first ending , on the C-sharp in measure 34, and on the B at the end of measure The thematic transformation has already begun. The second movement minuet lacks the traditional trio, perhaps in keeping with the abbreviated nature of a sonatina. It is written in D-flat major instead of C-sharp major , and its modal inflections recall an earlier Ravel work, the of ten years before. Ravel emphasizes the upbeat accents of the theme as he did in the first movement. These accents, coupled with an aristocratic tempo, prevent this movement from becoming a waltz. According to pianist Vlado Perlemuter, Ravel said that it should be played sensitively, but not over-refined. Most pianists will find the awkward G octave with added A-flat in measure 8 easier to play by placing the thumb carefully along the edge of the A-flat and playing both keys G and A-flat at the same time. Rolling the chord is not advised. Sonatine (Ravel, Maurice) - IMSLP: Free Sheet Music PDF Download

I have added some additional pedaling suggestions in parentheses. Ravel dedicated the Sonatine to his dear friends Ida and Cipa Godebski. The Sonatine quickly became popular with audiences and Ravel performed the first two movements regularly on concert programs across Europe and during his tour of America in He did not often perform the last movement because he did not feel capable of playing it well enough. Ravel made a reproducing piano roll of the first two movements for the Welte- Mignon Company in which is now available on LP records and CDs. The first movement is in F-sharp natural minor Aeolian mode and is a sonata-allegro form. Rolling the chord is not advised. Likewise, do not roll the chords in measure 21 or in measures Be sure to replay the low E in the left hand at the end of measure It is slurred, not tied. But it might take up a lot more practice time than the first two movements, so If I were you I would start looking at it. Worked my way through the 1st, 2nd, and then started on the third.. Maybe you find that your own way is more comfortable with you. I didn't, but you never know:P Anyway, it shouldn't be that hard to get up to speed. That of course depends on your level, but I find it at least easier to sight-read than the two first movements. I'm not finished with it yet myself Bye for now! So which movement can you call your favourite one? I really love to play the 2nd movement, you know.. Great idea to post some recordings on PF! I really want to hear how you guys play this piece! Anyway, I bet you guys have got recordings of this sonatine, too played by other pianists? I love to hear him playing Ravel and also Debussy.. All three movements are really beautiful.. But at the moment the second is my favourite as well It is just so.. But I have been on holiday much of the time, so I haven't been able to practice that much.. But I'm now back practising more intense than ever! He plays it very good, he manages to make the voices really sing. But I'd love to hear other versions I think I'm going to look for the recording of Entremont. Sadly, this is one of the few Ravel piano pieces my teacher didn't record I'm not at all finished with the third movement, nor the first two, musically speaking and when I present it to my teacher I'll probably end up being even less finished than I thought I was.. I just started learning this piece - can anyone tell me which edition is the best? I would normally buy Durand UMP , but it's the most expensive, and there's an 'Urtext' Peters edition edited by Nichols which is probably good. Any opinions? I have the Durand edition and I'm very satisfied with it. I haven't seen any other editions though. But I'm sure there'll be more replies. I think I've got the Phillipp edition, but I'm not very sure.. I bought the Peters edtion it was recommended by the Associated Board. If anyone's interested I'll post my thoughts on it when it arrives. I'm interested! Well the Peters edition arrived today, and it's very good. It has some useful performance notes, particularly regarding the tempi that Ravel wished the movements to be played at. The music itself contains quite a few editorial suggestions accents, dynamics etc. The suggestions are marked in brackets clearly. The music also includes una and tre corde directions based on Ravel's piano roll recordings. All the actual notes appear to be the same as the Durand edition I played from. Anyway, it's a good edition and it's probably worth buying as it seems pretty authoratitve lots of notes on sources etc. It's also quite cheap. Quote from: qwerty quaver on July 17, , AM. Anyone already finished this piece? Maybe we should post some recordings of it I'm almost finished..
