That is the case in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Syria and Iraq, as well as in North and West Africa and the Horn of Africa. -

Mukhw Somalia has enjoyed a unique role in the history of African nationalism. As the only country in Africa whose population is vinually homogeneous, most speak a common language, all are Muslims and claim to be relaled to a common (or several common) distant ancestors. One might therefore expect thai its independence movement would have been more unified than those ofother African territories where tribal and regional differences came to be reflected in political party groupings after World War Il. Also Somalia was the only country to be partitioned seveml times: once at the end of the 19th century during the scramble for Africa and again in the 1940's following the break-up of the lIalian East African Empire. This would seem to have been another factor that unified Somalis in a sense ofcommon nationalism. However, the drive for Somali independence gave rise to not just one but several political parties. Were these panies based on regional or "tribal" differences of a particular Somali son? Did they have differtnt views ofSomali nationalism and self-government? These questions are difficuh to answer, not only because source materials are limited but also because one Somali party, the Somali Youth League (SYL), came to dominate the political scene in the 1950's and was the majority party at the time of Somali independence in 1960. -

Nairobi Meeting on Repatriation of Sudanese The Government of Kenya was led by Mr. Refugees in Kenya: Peter Kusimba, Commissioner for Refugee The 5 th Meeting of the Tripartite Commission Affairs; the Government of Sudan was led by on Voluntary Repatriation of Sudanese Dr. Mohamed Ahmed M. Introduction 1. From 19 July to 2 August 2008, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) undertook a preliminary human rights assessment mission on Somalia. The mission was dispatched at the request of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) of the United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS) and in accordance with Human Rights Council Resolution A/HRC/RES/7/35 of 28 March 2008 (See Annex 1), requesting OHCHR to strengthen its presence in Somalia to provide technical assistance and advisory services to the relevant Somali institutions. In addition, the mission was also prompted by Security Council Resolution S/Res/1814 of 15 May 2008 (See Annex 2), requesting the Secretary-General to establish an effective capacity within UNPOS to monitor and enhance the protection of human rights in Somalia. 2. Further to these requests, in June 2008 the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in consultation with the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (TFG) through its Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva, approved the deployment of an OHCHR mission to Somalia and the region to analyse and conduct a preliminary assessment of the current human rights challenges in Somalia with a view to formulating recommendations for steps to be taken to advance human rights protection, promotion and advocacy in the short, medium and long term. -

The US National Counterterrorism Center is pleased to present the 2016 edition of the Counterterrorism (CT) Calendar. Since 2003, we have published the calendar in a daily planner format that provides our consumers with a variety of information related to international terrorism, including wanted terrorists; terrorist group fact sheets; technical issue related to terrorist tactics, techniques, and procedures; and potential dates of importance that terrorists might consider when planning attacks. The cover of this year’s CT Calendar highlights terrorists’ growing use of social media and other emerging online technologies to recruit, radicalize, and encourage adherents to carry out attacks. This year will be the last hardcopy publication of the calendar, as growing production costs necessitate our transition to more cost- effective dissemination methods. In the coming years, NCTC will use a variety of online and other media platforms to continue to share the valuable information found in the CT Calendar with a broad customer set, including our Federal, State, Local, and Tribal law enforcement partners; agencies across the Intelligence Community; private sector partners; and the US public.
