USIP’s Work in Somalia Making Peace Possible UNMISS Photo/JC Mcilwaine CURRENT SITUATION After decades of civil war and the collapse of the central government in 1991, Somalis and international supporters have made progress in re-establishing state structures, such as a provisional 2012 constitution and the country’s first elections for a government since 1969. The African Union and the United Nations, with U.S. assistance, support the Federal Government of Somalia in restoring President Hassan Sheikh institutions. United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) For Immediate Release PRESS STATEMENT 51/2014 SRSG Kay meets with Somali officials and foreign diplomats, calling for political stability ahead of Copenhagen Conference Mogadishu, 16 November 2014 – United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary- General (SRSG) Nicholas Kay met with Somali political leaders on 16 November 2014. He was joined by Danish Ambassador Geert Aagaard Andersen, European Union (EU) Special Representative for the Horn of Africa Alex Rondos, EU Special Envoy to Somalia Michele Cervone d'Urso, Italian Ambassador Fabrizio Marcelli, Swedish Ambassador Mikael Lindvall and UK Ambassador Neil Wigan for meetings with His Excellency President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, His Excellency Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed and His Excellency Speaker of the Federal Parliament Mohamed Osman Jawari. They discussed the ongoing political crisis and urged the leaders to find a solution that would allow the Federal Government to implement the Vision 2016 plan for Somalia’s political transformation in a timely manner. Their meetings came as the Federal Government and Somalia’s international partners prepare for the first Ministerial-level High Level Partnership Forum (HLPF) in Copenhagen on 19 and 20 November. “The HLPF will be a critical opportunity to review progress and chart the way ahead for the implementation of the New Deal Somali Compact. The Compact brings together national priorities agreed amongst the Somali people, the Federal Government and the international community. Much has been achieved, particularly through the concerted and joint efforts of the Federal Government. But significant challenges remain. The ongoing political crisis in Somalia is a serious risk to further progress. -

European Union Training Mission Somalia PRESS SUMMARY 13th April 2018 “In ‘Media’ stat virtus” EUTM - SOMALIA 13/04/2018 Blast Kills 4, Injures 13 at Somalia Soccer Match April 12, 2018 - Mohamed Olad Hassan - A bomb exploded during a local soccer (football) game in southern Somalia's restive Lower-Shabelle province on Thursday, killing at least four people, security officials said. "An improvised explosive device went off during the semifinal of a local soccer team's cup" in Barawe town, Bashir Mohamed Yusuf, the town's deputy commissioner for security, told VOA. Yusuf and hospital sources said at least 13 people were also wounded in Barawe, which is about 220 kilometers southwest of the Somali capital, Mogadishu. "The bomb was planted in the VIP section of the soccer stadium with the intention of harming the local authorities," said Yusuf. "But since we tactically sat at a different location today, it hit some of the football players and spectators." A spectator who was at the soccer field at the time and asked to remain anonymous said the bomb exploded at the start of the second half of the game between locally popular teams Elmen and SYL, and "it seems it was detonated remotely from the nearby areas." Barawe is a strategic port town and major base for African Union troops in the region. It is remembered for being a key stronghold of al-Shabab Islamists, but the Somali National Army captured it in 2014 with the backing of African Union forces. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. -

The topic of urban segregation has been neglected in both classic Somali studies, and recent studies of post-war state-building and governance in Somaliland. Such negligence of urban governance in debates over state-making stems from a predominant focus on national and regional levels, which overlooks the institutions governing cities. -

EUTM-S PIO – PRESS REVIEW March, 19th 2018 Jawari calls for re-deployment of Regular Forces in Parliament as he nods motion against him Mogadishu (HOL) - Lower House Speaker Mohamed Osman Jawari on Sunday called redeployment of Regular Security Forces in the Parliament a day after AMISOM took over the security of the House. Speaking to media in Mogadishu, Jawari said the forces deployed recently in the Lower House should vacate. "We want the new forces to leave the Parliament, the regular Forces take over the responsibil6 and allow the House to conduct its business, failure to do so, We will declare armed militia have forcibly taken over the House of the people," Jawari vowed. Jawari refuted claims that he had accepted to resign after pressure against him mounted. “I came here by ballot according to the law and will leave this office in accordance with the same law," he responded. The speaker accepted the motion against him to be tabled before the parliament within 10 days. "The motion is now accepted and it should be tabled before the parliament within ten as per the House Standing Orders," he noted. Executive Summary Over the last two years, Somalia experienced ongoing violence and a continuous reconfiguration of political and military forces. During a United Nations brokered peace process in Djibouti, the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) reconciled with one of its opponents, the moderate Djibouti wing of the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS-D).
