However, over the last several centuries this region has experienced intense land-use conversion. The most widespread and significant land-use change is the extensive cultivation of these soils. As a result, Chernozems of the region that were some of the most naturally fertile soils in the world with thick A horizons had become, by the second half of the 19th century, weakly productive, with decreased stocks of organic matter. -

Zabolotnia Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine and of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, Ukraine Received: 17 July 2017 / Accepted: 26 February 2018 / Published online: 01 May 2018 ABSTRACT According to the scientific researches of many scientists in the world, the climate fluctuations causes changes of the whole complex hydrometeorological factors. The main factor that determines the thermal regime of the rivers is air temperature. In this paper, the long-term tendencies of the average annual water temperature and air temperature in the Siverskyi Donets River Basin (within Ukraine) was researched. The period of observation on gauging stations is the start of observations till 2013 inclusive (the longest period is 1947-2013). The methodological approaches are based on the use of hydro-genetic methods. It was found that series of observations of the hydrometeorological data is homogeneous and synchronous. However, the fluctuations of the average annual water temperature are not always synchronous phase. The tendency to increase the average annual water temperature of rivers, caused by corresponding increase of air temperature, was found. Holliday Departments of Anthropology and Geosciences University of Arizona PO Box 210030 Tucson, Arizona 85721-0030 USA Running Title: Modern Human Dispersal in Eastern Europe 1 Hoffecker & Holliday ● Landscape Archaeology & Dispersal of Modern Humans in Eastern Europe ABSTRACT Homo sapiens dispersed into Eastern Europe before 40,000 cal BP and both the genetics of living humans and the archaeological record indicate that they may have arrived in two or more migratory waves. The archaeological record of the arrival and early settlement of modern humans in Eastern Europe (45,000–30,000 cal BP) is dominated by open-air sites on the large lowland plain that extends from the Carpathian to the Ural Mountains. The record exhibits many parallels to the terminal Upper Paleolithic (or Paleoindian) sites of the North American Plains and Southwest. Traces of large-mammal kill-butchery events and carcass-processing areas are common, although they often are associated with a habitation area (which is known but less common in the North American sites). The earliest movement of modern humans in Eastern Europe may be represented by an archaeological proxy in the form of many Levallois blade and point assemblages that appear to date to the same interval as the Bohunician assemblages of Central Europe (~45,000 cal BP). Direct migration from the Near East via the Caucasus Mountains is documented by bladelet assemblages in the Caucasus and on the central plain at roughly the same time the Proto-Aurignacian industry moved into southern Europe (i.e., 43,000– 42,000 cal BP). -

THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION This country report is prepared as a contribution to the FAO publication, The Report on the State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources. The content and the structure are in accordance with the recommendations and guidelines given by FAO in the document Guidelines for Preparation of Country Reports for the State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources (2010). These guidelines set out recommendations for the objective, scope and structure of the country reports. Countries were requested to consider the current state of knowledge of forest genetic diversity, including: Between and within species diversity List of priority species; their roles and values and importance List of threatened/endangered species Threats, opportunities and challenges for the conservation, use and development of forest genetic resources These reports were submitted to FAO as official government documents. The report is presented on www. fao.org/documents as supportive and contextual information to be used in conjunction with other documentation on world forest genetic resources. The content and the views expressed in this report are the responsibility of the entity submitting the report to FAO. FAO may not be held responsible for the use which may be made of the information contained in this report. Section I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Section I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The forest area of the Russian Federation is 809,090 ha or 20.1% of the total forest area of the world (Global Forest Resources Assessment 2010). The country's forests are mostly natural. Annually artificial reforestation (planting or seeding of native species) is carried out on an area of about 200 hectares, and reforestation by means of promoting natural regeneration (creating condi- tions for rapid stocking of valuable native tree species) is carried out on an area of over 600 hectares, which is very important to preserving/maintaining the genetic structure of natural forests. -

Environmental degradation of the river is made worse by the Trans-Dniestrian conflict, which, amongst others, hinders the use of joint infrastructure for wastewater treatment. The problem is of a transboundary nature, as the water flows from Ukraine to the Republic of Moldova and then back into Ukraine before being discharged into the Black Sea. Given the importance of the Dniester as a source of drinking water for major cities such as Odessa, the current situation threatens not only the environment but also human health. A Bilateral Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Republic of Moldova on the Joint Use and Protection of Border Waters was signed in 1994, and a Meeting of Plenipotentiaries has been instituted as a cooperation mechanism. Even though this cooperation is working with regard to flood management, the Agreement and its institutional mechanism need to be revised. Important guidelines for future developments include the UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes and (as both Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova aim to become members of the European Union) the EU Water Framework Directive.
