  • Chapter I Tsunami
Executive summary In the morning hours of 26 December, 2004, huge seismic sea waves triggered by massive undersea earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused the death of many thousands of people, leaving tens of thousands homeless in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Maldives. Fishermen, tourists and people living on the coast were unprepared for the waves that rose upto 6 meters high throughout the Indian Ocean, Andaman Sea and Arabian Sea. The earthquake, had its epicenter 257 km south southwest of Banda Aceh in Sumatra, Indonesia. This was the most powerful earthquake experienced in the region during the last 40 years. 176 persons were killed in Kerala as tsunami waves rising over the Arabian Sea invaded the land, wreaking havoc and destruction in the coastal fishing hamlets in the southern districts of the state. This report presents the impact of tsunami on natural eco systems. The marine environment in the southwest coast between Thottapally and Muttam has been successfully affected as a result of the impact of Tsunami , as reflected by the following findings : The concentration of nutrients has been reduced at all transects just after tsunami. However, values gradually picked up in the period from January to May 2005. Primary productivity had been drastically reduced in the wake of tsunami, especially near Vizhinjam and Kolachel. This also has improved considerably evident from the samples collected in May 2005. There was a lowering of plankton species diversity just after tsunami period, in January 2005. The fish catch has been reduced subsequent to tsunami. This has shown considerable improvement now, as reported by the fishermen from that area.

College Pandalam Abstract: Nineteenth century witnessed the emergence of a number of social reformers in Kerala who raised their voice against the caste discrimination. Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker was one among them, who challenged the assumed supremacy of the savarnas and tried to uplift the avarnas and thereby tried to purify Hindu society. To attain equality in the society he led a series of struggles. But as a pioneer reformer from a backward community, his contributions were not received the proper attention of the scholars. So this study tries to bring light on the unwritten contributions of Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker. Keywords: Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker, , Kerala. Introduction The dawn of nineteenth century did not shun the intensity of social and religious distress that had been suffered by the avarnas (the downtrodden classes) for many centuries. As the Hindu religion was under the shrill clutches of rigid caste system and the observation of mal-practices, the avarnas had to suffer a number of miseries. When the sufferings of low caste people had reached its zenith, nineteenth century gave birth to a number of social reformers in Kerala. In the gallery of historical personalities, there were numerous persons who personify themselves in the social and religious fields such as Vaikunda Swamikal, Chattambi Swamikal, Sri Narayana Guru, etc.

The BMCs of Kerala has also been declared as Environmental watch groups by the Government of Kerala vide GO No 04/13/Envt dated 13.05.2013. In Kerala after the devastating natural disasters of August 2018 Post Disaster Needs Assessment ( PDNA) has been conducted officially by international organizations. The present report of Rapid Impact Assessment of flood/ landslides on Biodiversity focus on community perspectives of the affect on Biodiversity and Ecosystems. It is for the first time in India that such an assessment of impact of natural disasters on Biodiversity was conducted at LSG level and it is a collaborative effort of BMC and Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB). More importantly each of the 187 BMCs who were involved had also outlined the major causes for such an impact as perceived by them and suggested strategies for biodiversity conservation at local level. Being a study conducted by local community all efforts has been made to incorporate practical approaches for prioritizing areas for biodiversity conservation which can be implemented at local level.

  • Jeffi Selvan.J Original Research Paper Zoology Deleep Packia Raj
Original Research Paper Volume-8 | Issue-5 | May-2018 | PRINT ISSN No 2249-555X Zoology WATER LEVEL FLUCTUATION AND INDICATOR BACTERIAL DISTRIBUTION IN QUATERNARY AQUIFERS ALONG PAMPA RIVER BANK, KERALA Jeffi Selvan.J Research Scholar, MS University, Tamil Nadu, India. Associate Professor and Research Guide, Scott Christian College, Nagercoil, Tamil Deleep Packia Raj Nadu, India. Dr. A Murugan Co- Guide, ABSTRACT Pampa, the third longest river in Kerala is one of the most stressed rivers in the state. Water level fluctuation and distribution of indicator bacteria in quaternary aquifers along Pampa river bank in Chengannur- Maramon sector during Southwest and North east monsoons and summer season of 2013-2014 is discussed in this paper. Monthly water level in dug wells is monitored and seasonal analysis of riverine and well waters for indicator bacteria is carried to understand the pollution contribution from the river to the well water and the same from the banks to the river. Water level of dug wells was generally the lowest in SW monsoon which did not show relative influence of their proximity with the river. Water level fluctuation at Maramon did not show seasonal influence probably due to fresh water flow from KIP canal with fractured walls. Higher occurrence of Total and Faecal coliforms in the study area during NE monsoon can also be contributed from the downstream water flow from pilgrimage site at Pampa. During SW Monsoon River water carries coliforms landward but do not infiltrate more than 200-300m off the bank. Contamination of faecal streptococci was ubiquitous in the study area. However, their presence in wells far inland in the absence of faecal coliforms can be of nonhuman in origin.

  • Kerala: the Tsunami and After T K Naveenachandran
Kerala: The tsunami and after T K Naveenachandran The infamous Indian ocean tsunami hit three states of India--Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Kerala, as well as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Tamil Nadu was the worst hit state. The tsunami hit the Kerala coast at about 11am, 26 December 2004. By then, many people were aware of its impending arrival through television broadcasts and ran away from the coast, an act that saved considerable lives. Government officials, such as personnel from the state observatory and department of natural disasters responded as if they were unaware of what a tsunami is. In fact, most of the government officers arriving at the coastal villages did not even comprehend the magnitude of the impending danger. This lack of awareness and understanding was also reflected in the manner of their assistance after the tsunami. In Kerala’s Kollam district, Alappad village, 132 persons died, while 39 persons died in Alappuzha district, Aratupuzha village. Considerable property was destroyed in other districts and villages, but there was no loss of life. Fishing boats, nets, houses, shops and other establishments were destroyed or severely damaged along the coast. Four thousand houses were reconstructed in Alappad and 1500 in Aratupuzha. The tsunami’s immediate devastation was far outweighed by its long term damage. Large areas of land for instance, were rendered useless due to salinity. This affected local farmers, particularly those dependent on paddy cultivation. The government’s response was limited to oral rhetoric such as, ‘We will give everything back to the people other than the lives lost,’ declared by state finance minister Mr K M Mani in a public meeting.
