VANCOUVER ISLAND’S THEATRE GETAWAY MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR MARK DUMEZ For the Chemainus Theatre Festival, an organization dedicated to exploring and nourishing truth, hope, redemption, love and the human spirit, Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables is an exciting undertaking. The core of the tale goes straight to the heart. To tell the expansive story, we’ve brought in our largest team, extended technical rehearsals and pre-production planning and added other resources to the show. And yet, in this intimate theatre, we get to enjoy this sweeping epic up close and MARK DUMEZ ARTISTIC DIRECTORpersonal – in compelling closeness. It’s been a thrill. In Hugo’s world, we are faced with opportunities to witness the embrace of another person or dismissal of them, characters who seek only their own survival and those who engage in acts of service. Everyone in this story has desperate needs – seeking justice, finding safety, reconciling their past and choosing to love as they would want to be loved. And yet, the most powerful elements of the story turn on acts of mercy, love and forgiveness. The sweeping arcs of these characters reflect to us our own realities and ask how will we respond when faced with our own sets of difficult choices? How then shall we live? VANCOUVER ISLAND’S THEATRE GETAWAY DIRECTOR’S NOTES What is it that has made Les Misérables, the musical a worldwide phenomenon? Let us start with an attempt to sum up the 1463 page novel written by Victor Hugo. This book is a drama whose first character is the Infinite. Man is the second. … Whenever we meet the Infinite in man, whether well or poorly understood, we react with respect. There is in the synagogue, in the mosque, in the pagoda, and in the wigwam, a hideous side that we detest and a sublime side that we adore. What a subject of meditation, and what a limitless source of reverie is this reflection of God upon the human wall! This quote from the novel gives us a sense of what this story is truly about. It’s not about a minor uprising in the history of France. It’s not even about the salvation of Jean Valjean. It’s about that which is infinite and that which is hideous in us all. We all experience misery in some way – we are all “les misérables.” From that place of misery we have two choices: To descend further into the shadows or to climb toward the light, the infinite! How do we climb toward the light? We love. Because, “to love another person is to see the face of God.” This is all expressed through the characters of Les Misérables. Primarily by Jean Valjean, who is constantly being asked to navigate the hideous and sublime that lives within him; and Javert, who lacks the capacity to see the infinite in anyone. So, we can say that this story in its own way reaches to articulate nothing other than the infinite… Making it the ultimate subject for a musical. , at its best, attempts to articulate that which is ineffable (because with music we can reach for what cannot be said by words alone). And what is harder to articulate than the infinite? With a score so expansive, so reaching, Les Misérables, the musical, does a miraculous job expressing Victor Hugo’s, “limitless source of reverie.” Which leaves those who see it with a renewed feeling of hope and a stronger connection to the infinite. Perhaps that is why Les Misérables has become the most beloved musical of all time.

PETER JORGENSEN Director The Chemainus Theatre Festival is beginning to feel like a second home to Peter as Les Mis marks his 5th production here as director. Also for Chemainus: Oklahoma!, Guys and Dolls, , and his own adaptation of It’s a Wonderful Life that premiered here this past December. As an artistic producer with Patrick Street Productions Peter has directed , The Fully Monty, Bat Boy: the Musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein: Out of a Dream, Floyd Collins and The Light in the Piazza (Jessie & Ovation awards for Outstanding Production). VANCOUVER ISLAND’S THEATRE GETAWAY Jessica BaYntUn Costume Designer Jessica Bayntun obtained her bachelors in fashion design at Kwantlen Polytechnic University kick starting her for colour, texture and movement. She is currently teaching drafting and sewing at Kwantlen, designing for theatre, and constructing one of a kind garments for Messica Demolition including custom corsetry, lingerie, and swimwear. Theatre including; Bat Boy, The Wild Party, The Light in the Piazza, , and It’s a Wonderful Life.

MICHELLE Bardach Eponine Michelle graduated in 2012 from the Musical Theatre Program at Capilano University. Favorite credits include Star-To-Be in (RCMT), Kate McGowan in (TUTS), Irene Molloy in Hello, Dolly! (Exit 22), and Sister Sophia in The Sound of Music (Gateway). She won the 2012 Ovation Award for Outstanding Supporting Performance in Riverview High, and the 2012 Broadbent Award for Titanic. For more information, check out michellebardach.com.

JITEN Beairsto Violin Jiten Beairsto is from Vancouver, BC and earned a degree at the University of Victoria in Violin Performance. He studied with Sharon Stanis at UVic and won the UVic Concerto Competition in 2012. He has participated in the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and often plays in ensembles such as the Victoria Symphony and the Galiano Ensemble. Jiten also holds a degree in English literature and plans to start a Masters of Music in the near future.

LAUREN Bowler Fantine Lauren’s delighted to be making her Chemainus Theatre debut, having loved visiting here while growing up on Salt Spring. Recent theatre: Chelsea Hotel (Firehall Arts Centre); Fiddler on the Roof (Western Canada Theatre); High Society (Jessie Award nomination), Blood Brothers, Gypsy (Arts Club); My Fair Lady, Thoroughly Modern Millie (Gateway); (Vancouver Playhouse, Citadel Theatre, National Arts Centre). VANCOUVER ISLAND’S THEATRE GETAWAY REUBEN Broadway Gavroche Reuben lives in Clearwater, BC and regularly participates in the Kamloops Festival of the Arts. In the 2014 Festival he won six First Place Vocal Awards as well as the Marion Owens Award for the “Most Promising Elementary Musical Theatre Award” for the song “Where is Love” from the musical Oliver. He is actively pursuing singing and theatre as a student of Meredythe Broadway of the Cowichan Valley.

EMILY Burton Cello Emily Burton grew up in Vernon, BC and attended the University of Victoria to earn degrees in both Cello Performance and Biochemistry. At UVic, she studied with Professor Pam Highbaugh-Aloni. Her musical studies have taken her to the Aspen Music Festival, Morningside Musicbridge in Shanghai, and the Quartet Program in New York. She has performed concertos with the Okanagan Symphony, Kamloops Symphony and UVic Orchestra.

SARAH Carlé Ensemble Sarah is thrilled to return to the Chemainus Theatre Festival and work on Les Misérables! CTF credits include: The Buddy Holly Story; The Gifts of the Magi; and Steel Magnolias, for which she received a Jessie Award nomination. Other credits: Sola, Smalltown (Theatre SKAM); Chiffon, Little Shop of Horrors (Blue Bridge Rep); Mother, Nevermore (Urban Arts Productions). She also performs with Victoria’s Gotta Getta Gimmick musical theatre company.

GRAHAM Coffeng Enjolras Graham moved to Vancouver 3 years ago and has appeared on TV in shows such as Supernatural & Fringe as well as the new web series The True Heroines, recent winner at the LA Webfest & Van Webfest. Also, he co-produced and acted in the feature film, Afterparty winning Best Ensemble and the Reel Can. Indie Award at the Can. Film Fest 2014. Recent theatre: It’s A Wonderful Life (CTF) and Floyd Collins (PSP/TIFT). Love to Joshua, Ben, Mum & Dad.

VANCOUVER ISLAND’S THEATRE GETAWAY Kevin Michael Cripps Musical Director Kevin is a full time instructor in the Musical Theatre program at Capilano University. Recently, Kevin completed his Masters Degree in the Practice of Voice and Singing (Ma PoVaS) at Guildford School of Acting in Guildford, England. While studying, Kevin contributed music and arrangements to The Bakewell Bakeoff, A New Musical now published by Rodger’s and Hammerstein EU. Recent music direction credits include Titanic for Theatre Under the Stars and The Drowsy Chaperone for Capilano University.

Vanessa Croome Cosette Nanaimo-raised soprano, Vanessa won the BC Provincial Champion for Classical Voice in 2009. A graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy, now at Oberlin Conservatory in the United States for her Bachelors Degree of Music in Vocal Performance. This will be Vanessa’s third show in Chemainus, she was last seen in Fiddler on the Roof and Miracle on 34th Street. More recently she was in Albert Herring with the Oberlin Conservatory Opera.

JAY Davis Javert Jay recently made his west coast debut in Patrick Street’s production of Floyd Collins in Vancouver. Many thanks to Peter and Katey for the introduction to the theatre community on this beautiful coast. Recent Canadian premiere productions: Queen For A Day starring Alan Thicke, I Love You Because, and Ordinary Days. SHIFRA DAY Viola Shifra is a violist, pianist, and teacher in Vancouver. She is happy to be back on the coast after graduate studies with André Laplante in Montreal and completing her MMus and BMus in piano performance with secondary studies in viola. She has received many awards, including third prize in Knigge National Piano Competition, been heard on radio in Quebec, appeared on CTV and NBC with Michael Bublé and been published in the Canadian Music Educator.

VANCOUVER ISLAND’S THEATRE GETAWAY CRAIG DeCarlo Ensemble Craig is thrilled to join the cast of Les Misérables. Select credits include Roger in the first all-Canadian cast of , Grease (Footlight Theatre), Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding (The Second City, Toronto), Grey’s House of Anatomy (Jubilations/Celebrations), Mad Mission to Mars (Madscience/NASA, FL), Oh Canada Eh?! EMMA Hammond Apprentice Stage Manager Emma is a stage manager based in Vancouver, and is happy to be back in Chemainus for her second summer production. She is thrilled to be working on her father’s favorite musical. Past credits include: Lungs (Mitch and Murray), Armstrong’s War, (Arts Club), (Pacific Opera), Singin’ in the Rain (Chemainus). LILY Killam Little Cosette Lily is 8 years old and she is excited to be playing one of her dream roles as “young Cosette!” Lily first got her start playing Gretel in Sound of Music , she has also been in Oklahoma! and My Fair Lady all with the South Island Musical Theatre. She most recently was in Dear Edwina with Chalkboard Theatre. Lily has also starred in an international footwear commercial. Lily plans on continuing with her goal of being on stage and film.

BRAD L’écuyer Ensemble Seventeen years ago, Brad started his musical journey with Les Mis and he is is thrilled for another summer in Chemainus! VANCOUVER ISLAND’S THEATRE GETAWAY HOLLAS Longton Violin Hollas Longton began his violin studies with Yasuko Eastman. Other teachers have included Gerald Stanick, Paul Kling, Burkhard Godhoff, Ann Elliott-Goldschmid, and Denes Zsigmondy (at the Hochschule fur Musik in Augsburg, Germany). Hollas has performed as soloist with the Victoria Chamber Orchestra, Victoria Civic Orchestra, Sooke Philharmonic, UVic Symphony Orchestra (as a prizewinner of the UVic concerto competition), and Victoria Symphony.

JESSE Martyn Ensemble Jesse returns to Chemainus for a fifth time after Jeeves in Bloom, Singin’ in the Rain, Gifts of the Magi, and Joseph. He recently ambled about as Slim in Hardline Productions’ Vancouver smash, Of Mice and Men. JEFFREY Pufahl Ensemble Originally from Saskatoon, Jeffrey is an accomplished actor, singer and director, who has worked in theatres across Canada, the US, and the UK. He was last seen in Chemainus as the accordion playing Avram in Fiddler on the Roof. He holds a B.Mus in Voice from McGill University, an MFA in Theatre Performance from the Cincinnati Conservatory and recently completed his MFA in Theatre Directing at the University of Victoria. www.jeffreypufahl.com

MICHEAL Querin Bishop/ Ensemble Thrilled to be making his Chemainus Theatre Festival debut in Les Misérables. Micheal has been a member of both The Stratford Shakespeare Festival and The Shaw Festival, performing in over thirty productions ranging from the works of the eponymous Shakespeare and Shaw to Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, as well as many other musical and theatre classics. He has performed across the country from Victoria to St. John’s. This is his 33rd year in the biz.

SARA Robb Stage Manager After a great summer of Singin’ In The Rain, Sara is excited to be back to work at Chemainus Theatre. As the resident Stage Manager of Pacific Opera Victoria, she has wrapped up her 3rd season (11th show) with The Marriage of Figaro. Sara is a graduate of VIU, and apprenticed at the Belfry Theatre (2008- 2010) and at Bard on the Beach - Studio Stage (2010). Other credits: Little Shop of Horrors, Blythe Spirit, Fire (Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre).

VANCOUVER ISLAND’S THEATRE GETAWAY SAYER Roberts Marius This past Christmas, Sayer made his home in Chemainus while he played Harry Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life. He is overjoyed to return for the summer, in what is truly a dream show for him. Other credits include; Out of a Dream (Patrick Street Productions), Curly in Oklahoma!, Barnaby in Hello, Dolly! (RCMT), Rolf in The Sound of Music (Gateway), and Barrett in Titanic (TUTS).

SHIMA TAKEDA Viola Shima Takeda is a freelance musician who lives and works in Victoria. She studied at the University of Victoria and has been active in the professional music community, performing with the Victoria Symphony, as well as performing as a member of the DieMahler Quartet and Doug Farr Jazz Ensemble. Other ensembles include the Sidney Classical Orchestra, the Saltspring Island Chamber Orchestra, Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra, and the Palm Court Light Orchestra.

Mike Taugher Lighting Designer Mike is the Chair, Theatre Manager, and Stagecraft Instructor for the Vancouver Island University Theatre Department, Nanaimo. His last lighting designs at Chemainus were All Shook Up and Steel Magnolias, he is delighted to be back for Les Misérables. Before moving to the Island (and he won’t say how long ago that was) he was with U of Calgary Drama Dept. He has designed for Chemainus, Theatre One, DJD, TNW, and countless Univ. shows.

PAUL Tedeschini Sound Designer Paul is a sound designer, as well as a full time mixing and mastering audio engineer. Live mix credits include: Liona Boyd, Sheri Ulrich, Barney Bentall and Tom Taylor, John Gogo. Recent sound design credits include: Home Is A Beautiful Word (The Belfry Theatre ); It’s a Wonderful Life, Chickens, The 39 Steps (Chemainus Theatre Festival); Noises Off (Western Canada Theatre); Fresco (Shadbolt Centre / TheCultch); and Circle Mirror Transformation (Arts Club Theatre).

VANCOUVER ISLAND’S THEATRE GETAWAY JILLIAN Telfer Little Cosette Jillian is a bright and loving 7 year old student at Queen of Angels Catholic School. Born and raised in the beautiful Cowichan Valley, this youngest of three loves singing, swimming, school & spending time with her family and friends. Jillian has been enjoying the Chemainus Theatre for all of her years and couldn’t be more excited and grateful for this amazing opportunity.

SEBASTIAN Tow Gavroche Sebastian spent the first seven years of his life in Chemainus and it means so much to be on this stage. Credits: Gavroche Les Misérables, Ralphie A Christmas Story and Tiny Tim A Christmas Carol for Western Canada Theatre, Kamloops. He will be acting alongside his mom, Anita Wittenberg and sister, Emma Tow in The Patron Saint of Stanley Park at Theatre North West in Prince George this fall. This performance is dedicated to his dad, Jeremy Tow.

JULIA Ullrich Ensemble Julia holds a diploma in Musical Theatre Performance from Capilano University and has completed an additional year of acting training at UBC. Favorite credits include Canadian Songbook Cabaret (Touchstone, In Tune), Polly Browne in The Boy Friend (Exit 22) and Madeleine Astor in Titanic: A New Musical (TUTS). She would like to thank Peter for this wonderful opportunity and her parents for their unwavering support. “Go big or go home!”

ANDREW Wheeler M. Thenardier Andrew is delighted to be making his Chemainus Theatre debut. Recent theatre credits include; Seminar (Stages Theatre), Proud (Firehall), Re:Union (Pacific Theatre), Gordon, Clybourne Park (Arts Club), and 9 seasons at Bard On The Beach. Recent film and TV credits include; Gracepoint, Motive, The Killing, Blood Line and World On Fire.

Alain Boublil Alain Boublil’s first musical, La Revolution Française in 1973, marked his transition from songwriting to musical theatre and the start of his collaboration with Claude-Michel Schöenberg with the hit album that became the first ever staged French musical. His idea of writing a musical version of Les Misérables brought them together again in 1978. The acclaimed show was written over a two-year period and recorded as an album before its opening at the Palais de Sports in Paris in September 1980. In 1983 Mr. Boublil met Cameron Mackintosh which led to his first London production Abbacadabra (a musical fairy-tale set to ABBA music) and to working with Claude-Michel and directors and writers on the English language adaptation of Les Misérables. The show has subsequently opened in 19 countries and 14 languages. Among the many awards Mr. Boublil has received were two Tony Awards in 1987 for Best Score and Best Book for the NY production and a 1988 Grammy for the Best Original Broadway Cast Recording which he co-produced with Claude-Michel Schöenberg. Miss Saigon opened on September 20, 1989 at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London and on April 11, 1991 in NY. The show has also played in Tokyo and Toronto with future production scheduled for Sydney, Australia and Stuttgart, Germany. Mr. Boublil will maintain a close association with all the international productions of Les Misérables and Miss Saigon while working with Claude-Michel on the screenplays for motion picture versions of both musicals.

Claude-Michel Schönberg Claude-Michel Schönberg is a successful record producer and songwriter who began his collaboration with Alain Boublil in 1973, writing the very first French musical, La Revolution Française. Mr. Schönberg played the role of Louis XVI in that production and also co-produced the double-gold record album of the show. In 1974, he recorded an album, singing his own compositions and lyrics, which included the number one hit single Le Premier Pas. In 1980, after two years’ work on the score, Mr. Schönberg and Mr. Boublil’s musical Les Misérables opened in Paris, where it was seen by more than 1.5 million people. In 1983, Mr. Schönberg produced an opera album in Paris with Julia Migenes Johnson and the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. Following work on the London production of Les Misérables (the 3rd longest running musical in British theatre history), Mr. Schönberg co-produced the double-platinum London cast album and became involved in casting all the major overseas productions of the show, including the American, Japanese and Australian companies. He won two coveted Tony Awards, for Best Score and Book, for the Broadway production of Les Misérables and a Grammy Award for the Best Original Cast Recording, which he co-produced with Alain Boublil. He also worked closely on the symphonic recording of the show. His score for Miss Saigon, again written in collaboration with Alain Boublil, is now repeating the international success story of Les Misérables. Produced by Cameron Mackintosh and again bringing together many members of the creative team behind Les Misérables, Miss Saigon opened with huge success at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London in September 1989, in NY in April 1991, in Tokyo in May 1992 and in Chicago (the first national U.S. tour) in November 1992. Future productions will open in Sydney, Australia and Stuttgart, Germany. Now Claude- Michel is back at the keyboards, composing their next musical, , while keeping close eye on the development of the screenplays for Les Misérables and Miss Saigon.

VANCOUVER ISLAND’S THEATRE GETAWAY Herbert Kretzmer Herbert Kretzmer, born in South Africa, came to London in 1954, and has since pursued twin careers as a newspaperman and songwriter. He was a feature writer at the Daily Sketch and a profile writer at the Sunday Dispatch. He joined the Daily Express in 1960 and later became its drama critic, a post he held for 18 years. Since 1979 he has been writing TV criticism for the Daily Mail and has won, in this capacity, two national press awards. As a lyric writer he wrote weekly songs for BBC-TV’s That Was The Week That Was. He won an Ivor Novello Award for the Peter Sellers/Sophia Loren comedy song Goodness Gracious Me. Other award-winning lyrics include two written for Charles Aznavour: Yesterday When I Was Young and the chart-topping She. Mr. Kretzmer wrote book and lyrics for the West End’s Our Man Crichton, which starred Kenneth More and Millicent Martin, and lyrics for the Theatre Royal Drury Lane’s The Four Musketeers. He also supplied lyrics for the Anthony Newly film Can Heironymous Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe And Find True Happiness? Tony Award, 1987, Best Score, Les Misérables.
