August 2020 | Page 2 IDCTA President’s PERSPECTIVE By Molly Fine In this issue, you will find the results of the IDCTA Summer Dressage Show, as well as pictures from the show. There were many good rides, despite the disruption that COVID-19 caused. Spectators were few and far between to avoid crowds at ring side; not our usual practice of supporting our barn mates and friends in the show ring! Many new rules were put in place to ensure social distancing and protection of show staff and competitors. It is now the norm to see masks worn throughout show grounds. This new normal has made it possible to have a show season, and we must maintain these practices to ensure that the season will not be cut short as the number of cases of COVID-19 continue to rise. Save taking your group pictures until after this pandemic is over and for the sake of continuance of the sport (unless, of course masks are included). Posting group pictures on Facebook without masks can be a red flag to those from USEF who are monitoring show activity. Thank you to all of the competitors who came out and participated in our brave new world. Your co- operation and up-beat attitudes made this a great show. Once again, it goes without saying that I am eternally grateful to those whose hard work and dedica- tion made this all possible. Without them there would be no show. I want to thank all of the volun- teers: Katie Miskovic, Joan Pecora, Pam Lang, Laura Jensen, Nicole Mosta. Jackie Puetz, Peggy Asseo, Robin Mattson, Abby and Emily Mallace, Becca Spellman, Eric Dierks, Michael Coghlan, Karen Ce- derholm and Cindy Lambert. Thanks to the staff: Anglika Coghlan, Deb Heier and her score keepers, Kathy Tardiff and Joanna Schroeder, our EMTs Ginny and Gary Randle, Sue Weiland, the staff at Silver- wood and those in the concession stand. Thanks to our officials: Lilo Fore, Jayne Ayers, Marie Johnson and Beth Davidson for traveling here to be with us and provide their wis- dom and expertise. A particular thanks goes to Lisa Froehlig for accommodating us at her wonderful property and for all of her help in preparing for the event. Without all of these folks; competitors, volunteers, staff and officials, our event would not have happened, and we would not have had the distinction of being one of the first shows held during the COVID-19 Pandemic Year of 2020. On a final note, because of COVID-19, the shortened season and the number of cancelled events, the board is revising the rules for this year’s year end awards. The requirements will be relaxed in alignment with the steps that USDF, USEA and USEF are taking. They will be posted on August 15 on the IDCTA website (www.idcta.org) and will be sent to you in an eblast. Stay tuned! Happy and healthy riding! Enjoy the hot weather (sometimes hard to do)!

August 2020 | Page 10 IDCTA Fatima Pawlenko-Kranz: A Responsible Approach to Showing The show season is off to belated start, with both organizers and com- petitors scrambling to stay abreast of the current COVID-19 recom- mendations. Because the various states have dif- ferent approaches to handling CO- VID-19, it is very important to check with ALL governing authorities at the location you are showing. That means not only are you to understand the show’s policy, but you must take care to learn both the show’s governing association’s policies (USDF, USEF, etc.), but also the hosting state’s policies. It appears COVID-19 policy has become a bone of contention, espe- cially along political lines. However, let me make this clear: If you don’t follow protocol at a show, not only will you risk being asked to leave the facility, but you might also shut the entire show down. HITS in Saugerties has already been slapped with a cease and desist order due to COVID concerns; they are now reopening, albiet with a careful COVID management protocol in place. Horse shows are a social outlet for many of us, but as hard as it is, you must leave friends and family at home until the threat of COVID has been erradicated. And please, please, do not pose for a group photo with your show team unless you are all wearing masks. Social media is be- ing monitored, and one careless photo could shut down a horse show for all. The bottom line is that horse shows bear the brunt of the responsibility for following COVID-19 protocol, and face fines and closures if they do not comply. The careless act of a few has the potential to negatively affect many. Please don’t be that per- son. A horse show is not the place to take a political stand. Take care, competitors! Good luck and stay well.

August 2020 | Page 12 IDCTA Eric’sTRAINING CORNER Training Philosophy By Eric G. Dierks, IDCTA VP of Eventing Photos courtesy of Eric Dierks A well trained horse should not only have a partnership with its rider, but should carry the accountability to balance themselves and offer the movement asked for. Too often I have seen horses either over or under ridden, enabling the horse to the point where either they block out the rider, or anticipate with anxiety. All of this can be avoided with a confident rider that understands the importance of rider and horse accountability. When training horses and their riders, I try to provide riders with a better understanding of their partners when taking the reins. Lessons for both horse and rider take multiple repetitions of consistency to be learned. Investing in regular training can get you and your horse on the right track toward your goals.

Eric Dierks started riding following his father’s footsteps in Dressage, then discovered Eventing, graduating as an “A” from the Fox River Valley Pony Club in Barrington, Il- linois. After competing in the North American Young Riders Championships, he went on to graduate from Illinois State University with a B.S. in Environmental Health Studies. Eric went on to pursue horses full-time as both a competitor and instructor, eventually leading him to be long-listed for the 2002 World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain and short-listed for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Having a for the , Eric has also won the first National Retired Race Horse Challenge in 2012, educating the public and promoting careers for the Thoroughbred when they are no longer racing. A big advocate for education, Eric has coached the Area IV Young Rider 3-Day Event Team at the North American Young Riders Championships, sat on the Board of Governors for the United States Pony Club, published countless articles on training, and continues to teach at his family’s Stonehedge Farm in Union Grove, Wisconsin. Today Eric continues to educate and compete in the Eventing, Dres- sage, and Hunter/Jumper arenas. Eric’s lessons and clinics center around the discovery of what makes things tick in the harmony of the horse and rider, highlighting Dressage principles across all disciplines.

IDCTA August 2020 | Page 15 Horse Shows Go Virtual by Becky Sturdy When the pandemic put most states into lockdown this spring, many of my online horse buddies started wondering what would happen to the show season after a winter of training. Enter the concept of a virtual horse show! I started seeing discussions of virtual dressage shows in April on internet forums and Facebook. The idea of entering a show without leaving home was very appealing and offered a good distraction from current events. The first step was to find virtual horse shows that I could enter once regular barn hours resumed. I researched the sites and classes offered and started texting with my coach about what would be good options, as Red and I are shooting to show Grand Prix by the end of summer. I knew we needed to be back in riding shape to complete a test that would make a suitable video. Our goal was to shoot a video at the end of June. Red posing for his hunter in hand class. August 2020 | Page 20 IDCTA IDCTA Clinic Affiliation Program In order to provide education opportunities for our members, we are establishing a program to affiliate with those barns who are giving clinics. We would like to be able work with a few barns like yours on two clinics per year. IDCTA requests that the hosting barn will: • Reserve two ride spots specifically for IDCTA members (if not filled three weeks before the clinic start date, these two slots can be filled with any rider). • Provide an auditor discount of $5-$10/day to IDCTA members. • Display the IDCTA banner during the clinic. • Provide advertising materials for the IDCTA Scribe and Social Media. IDCTA will: • Provide Insurance for the event through the IDCTA policy and furnish the barn with release forms for rider and auditor to sign. • Subsidize the barn with $100 to offset a small portion of the clinic cost. • Provide a rider subsidy of $400 per clinic for riders who are IDCTA members - If there are up to four IDCTA member riders, each rider would receive $100; if more than four, each rider would receive a portion of the $400 (i.e., if a clinic had six riders who were IDCTA members, each would receive $66). Each rider would be limited to two subsidies per year. • Provide an IDCTA member to man the auditor check-in table during the clinic. • Advertise the clinic on IDCTA’s Facebook page and on USDF Region 2’s Facebook page (using the communication form). In order for your barn to participate in this clinic affiliation program, your barn must be an IDCTA Business Member. This program is limited to two clinics per year. As an IDCTA business member, your barn would receive the following benefits: • One IDCTA Regular, Junior Rider or Young Rider membership including a Group Membership to USDF(go to http://www.usdf.org/join/ GMBenefits.pdf for a complete list of GMO benefits). • $60 of advertising in the IDCTA Scribe (good for one membership year, not cumulative). • An expanded listing in the IDCTA website Service Directory (www. idcta.org/membership/idcta-ser- vice-directory). • A condensed version of your website Service Directory listing in the IDCTA Scribe(see current issue for details). • Links to your website and/or email from both Service Directories, as well as any advertising you run in the Scribe. • Event listings on the IDCTA Calendar, both website and Scribe. • Email Blasts utilizing the IDCTA email list, a great way to advertise your business. If you would like to participate in this clinic affiliation program, your barn will be assigned a barn ambassador to ensure that there will be continuity and regular communication between the barn and the IDCTA board. We are excited about the program and are sure that there are benefits for each organization.
