Atti Acc. Rov. Agiati, a. 258, 2008, ser. VIII, vol. VIII, B: 101-312. Enrico Gelmi (1855-1901) was one among the most active explorers of the flora in Trentino (Province of Trento - Northern-Italy) during the last decades of XIX cen- tury. This paper outlines his biographical sketch from a scientific point of view, most- ly using data coming from his herbarium, at present housed in the Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali, where it is one of the most important historical nuclei. The par- tially annotated catalogue of the herbarium, completely revised by the authors, is pre- sented too; the samples personally collected by Gelmi and the ones coming from oth- er collectors are separately considered. Enrico Gelmi (1855-1901) è stato uno dei più attivi esploratori della botanica tridentina negli ultimi decenni del secolo XIX; ne viene qui delineato il profilo scien- tifico, desunto principalmente dal suo erbario, che è attualmente custodito presso il Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali e ne costituisce uno dei nuclei storici più im- portanti. Si presenta altresì il catalogo, parzialmente commentato, dell’erbario stesso, interamente sottoposto a revisione; vengono considerati separatamente i campioni raccolti personalmente da Gelmi e quelli provenienti da altri raccoglitori. -

Piero Redaelli and Raffaele Ciferri transferred (1934) C. farciminosum to the genus Histoplasma, as H. farciminosum (Rivolta and Micellone 1883, Redaelli and Ciferri 1934), mainly because of its dimorphic nature that made it similar to the tissue form of H. capsulatum var. capsulatum Darling 1906. Robert J. Weeks, Arvind A. Padhye and Libero Ajello, at the Division of Mycotic Diseases, Center for Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control (C.D.C.) Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. (1985), observed that this fungus generated macro- and microconidia resembling those of the capsulatum and duboisii varieties of H. capsulatum when incubated at room temperature, thus reducing the fungus to a varietal status as H. capsulatum var. farciminosum (Rivolta, 1873) Weeks, Padhye & Ajello, 1985. Gordon, at the Communicable Disease Center (C.D.C.) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A., included cycloheximide in a mycological medium, named “mycobiotic agar” or “Mycosel”, for the selective isolation of Coccidioides immitis (1951). The medium, integrated with the antibiotic at low concentrations, inhibiting the growth of saprophytic fungi but also of some pathogens (such as Cryptococcus neoformans), had a great impact in the mycological culture studies [Espinel- Ingroff, 1996; Georg et al., 1951]. Morris A. Gordon, of the Laboratories for Mycology and Mycobacteriology, Infectious Disease Institute, Centers for Laboratories and Research, New York State Department, Albany, New York, U.S.A., then at the Communicable Disease Center (C.D.C.), reported that he had succeeded to cultivate “spherical forms” of Malassezia furfur (Pityrosporum orbiculare) by including olive oil or saturated fatty acids in Sabouraud dextrose agar [Espinel-Ingroff, 1996; Gordon, 1951]. Edward E. Evans and John F. Kessel, from the Department of Medical Microbiology, School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A., described, 1 on the basis of previous studies by Evans himself, that Cryptococcus neoformans may be distinguished into three serological types, A, B and C, according to the antigenic differences detectable by agglutination reactions (1951). -

Lubicz 46, 31-512 Kraków, Poland * Correspondence to: [email protected] Abstract — The paper presents a short history of the mycological collection of the Jagiellonian University Herbarium (KRA, Kraków, Poland). The Herbarium holds over 22,000 specimens, including some interesting European and extra-European fungal exsiccata. One of the most valuable fungal collections (including many type specimens) in the Herbarium is that containing Javanese fungi gathered by Marian Raciborski at the end of 19th century. Key words — fungi of Pieniny Mts., fungi of Gorce Mts., ascomycetes, basidiomycetes, Peronospora The history The origin of the Jagiellonian University Herbarium dates back to 1780, when the Faculty of Chemistry and Natural History was established, and with it the Natural History Room (Köhler 1999; Köhler 2001a). The Herbarium, which was long associated with the Chair of Botany at the Botanical Garden, is now part of the Institute of Botany of Jagiellonian University. The first record of fungi being kept in the Herbarium dates from 1812, and the oldest specimen with a date placed on the label is from 1807 (Fig. 1). In the past the Herbarium collections served mainly an educational function (Köhler 2001b). Until 1910 each set of specimens, including purchased, exchanged, or donated exsiccata and collections, was kept separately and a taxonomic criterion was not applied to the Herbarium’s arrangement. -

The comprehensive indices attached to books by Persoon and Fries summarized names known at those times. Later compilations appeared piecemeal in journals or free-standing, always improving but hardly available for “rapid retrieval.” Twentieth century Index of Fungi required tedious data entry from thousands of journals over many years, but the result could later be inserted into electronically retrievable computer programs. Index Fungorum includes data harvested from Index of Fungi, but perhaps its major source has been Saccardo’s Sylloge Fungorum, probably the most prodigious compilation of the 19th–20th century. Names for lichen-forming fungi were gleaned from the catalogues of Zahlbruckner and Lamb. The role of the Commonwealth Mycological Institute, its predecessors and its successors, has been significant. Key words: compilations, nomenclators, name registration, Index Fungorum. -

Biographical Sketches of Deceased North American Mycologists including a few European Mycologists L. R. Hesler January 1975 FORWARD Ron Petersen University of Tennessee May 2020 For the first half of his long career, Lexemual Ray Hesler (1888-1977) was a plant pathologist. His interest in botany was sparked by his mentor at Wabash College (class of 1911), Mason Blanchard Thomas, professor of botany and horticulture. Thomas’ time at Wabash was marked by his uncanny identification of promising young men and encouraging them to continue their studies at leading universities. But that is only one side of the equation. Once a student was discovered, graduate studies required funds to pay for tuition, books, board, and room. Often, a former student, now on the faculty of a more comprehensive university (Yale and Cornell come to mind), made arrangements for an earmarked fellowship. Hesler benefited by such. Herbet Hice Whetzel (Wabash class of 1902, by 1911 head of the Department of Plant Pathology at Cornell University) arranged a fellowship for Hesler assisting apple growers in upstate New York in the summer of Hesler’s graduation from Wabash. In September, Hesler enrolled at Cornell in plant pathology. The next three summers were spent in the orchards. There followed the Cornell Ph. D. in 1914, and retention on the Cornell Plant Pathology Department faculty until his move to Tennessee in 1919. At Tennessee, administrative duties (i.e. Head of the new Department of Botany and later Dean of the College of Liberal Arts until his retirement in 1958) reduced research time, but his plant pathological interests didn’t flag.
