CHAPTER 6

Installing the IPM Client on Windows NT

IPM supports running only the IPM client software on a Windows NT system. However, you can run the IPM client on Windows NT with an IPM that resides on a different platform such as Sun Solaris. The IPM client software can be installed from the -ROM or it can be downloaded for installation using the IPM server’s web server. This chapter provides the following information about installing the IPM client software on Windows NT: • Requirements for the IPM Client on Windows NT on 6-2 • Installing the IPM Client on Windows NT from the CD-ROM on page 6-3 • Installing the IPM Client on Windows NT Using the Web Server on page 6-4 • Verifying the IPM Client Installation on Windows NT on page 6-6 • Modifying the IPM Client Configuration on Windows NT on page 6-7 • Uninstalling the IPM Client on Windows NT on page 6-10

Installing the IPM Client on Windows NT 6-1 Requirements for the IPM Client on Windows NT

Requirements for the IPM Client on Windows NT The following hardware and software is required to install the IPM client on a Windows NT system: • Windows NT version 4.0 with 3

Note IPM software release 2.0 has not been tested with Windows NT Service Pack 4.

• 64 MB RAM minimum (128 MB recommended) • 30 MB hard disk space Before you install the IPM client on a running Windows NT, you should know the following information: • IPM server port number for the Naming server (the default is 44342) • Name of the host where the IPM server software is installed

Tips The IPM server port number is obtained using the pkgparam -v CSCOcwbS | grep OSAGENT_PORT command on the Solaris server system.

Note If you cannot verify the IPM server port number or host name the time of the installation, then you can accept the default port number and enter a temporary name to continue with the installation. You can modify the installation settings for these items after the installation is complete without having to reinstall the software. For more information on how to do this, see the “Modifying the IPM Client Configuration on Windows NT” section on page 6-7.

6-2 Internetwork Performance Monitor Installation Guide Installing the IPM Client on Windows NT from the CD-ROM

Installing the IPM Client on Windows NT from the CD-ROM The IPM client installation program for Windows NT runs as a standard installation program. To move forward or continue with the installation program, click Next. To go backward or change options on a previous window, click Back. To complete the installation using the options that you selected, click Finish. To install the IPM client from the CD-ROM, complete the following steps: Step 1 Insert the IPM CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive on the workstation. The Install Shield setup window appears.

Note If the setup window does not automatically appear when you insert the CD-ROM, go to the root directory and run the ipmsetup.exe command. If you are having trouble reading the CD-ROM, be sure that your CD-ROM drive is compliant with the ISO 9660 standard.

Step 2 Follow the setup program messages and respond according to your site’s requirements. Step 3 When the Select IPM Server Configuration Dialog box (Figure 6-1) is displayed, do the following: • In the IPM Port box, verify that the default port 44342 is being used by the IPM server. The IPM client and server can only communicate if they are configured for the same port number. The default port number is 44342. If the system administrator who installed the IPM server did not accept the default port number, then you need to modify this field to match the value used in the IPM server installation. • In the IPM Host box, type the name of the host where the IPM server software is installed. • Click Next.

Step 4 Review the settings displayed at the end of the installation option windows. If the current settings are acceptable, click Finish to run the installation. Step 5 When the Setup Complete window is displayed, click Finish again.

Installing the IPM Client on Windows NT Using the Web Server You can use the IPM web server to access the client installation software if you do not have access to the CD-ROM or if you prefer to download the IPM client software from the IPM server to run the installation. Once you download the IPM client installation software to your workstation you can install the software on your local system by running the ipmsetup.exe command. For requirements and information about using the web server see the “Installing the IPM Client Software Using the Web Server” chapter. The following procedure explains how to download and install the IPM client software on a Windows NT workstation.

To install the IPM client on Windows NT using the web interface: Step 1 From your browser, go to the URL for the IPM web server (for example, http://youripmserver:1744).

Note If you do not have this information, contact the system administrator who installed the IPM server software.

Step 2 From the IPM home page, click NT 4.0. The IPM Client for NT 4.0 web page appears (Figure 6-2).

Step 3 From the IPM Client for NT 4.0 page, click the first instruction to download the installation setup program. Step 4 When queried, specify the directory where you want the installation software files downloaded.

Installing the IPM Client on Windows NT 6-5 Verifying the IPM Client Installation on Windows NT

Step 5 Go to the download directory and run the ipmsetup.exe command to install the software. The installation files automatically uncompress into a temporary directory, and the installation setup program starts. Step 6 Continue with the installation according to the instructions provided in the “Installing the IPM Client on Windows NT from the CD-ROM” section on page 6-3.

Verifying the IPM Client Installation on Windows NT To verify the IPM client installation, be sure that the IPM server is available. Go to the Cisco Internetwork Performance Monitor 2.0 program folder and run the IPM client. If the IPM client installation was successful, the IPM Main window should open (Figure 6-3).

Figure 6-3 IPM Main Window

If the IPM Main window does not open, the IPM server might not be available. If you have incorrectly configured either the IPM port or the IPM host name during the client software installation, then you will receive a message as shown in Figure 6-4 when you start the IPM client.
