Module 2 : Anatomy – The Skeleton In this module you will learn: The functions of the skeletal system The types of bones in the human body The effects of exercise on your bones What happens to the bones as we get older When studying to become a fitness instructor or personal trainer, you will learn all about the anatomy of the human body. Studying the skeleton is one of the foundations of your trade, you will need to know how the body is structured, the names of each bone, types of bones, importance of bone and joint health, detail of the spine and different terms of movement. Without stating the obvious, each of your clients has their own skeleton and you must be fully aware of how this works. This is for many reasons; you are a teacher and must be fully aware of how to prevent injuries, avoid unnecessary stress on the bones and, if qualified, help the client prevent or heal bone and joint related conditions or medical problems. 2.1 Understanding the Skeletal System The skeleton is comprised of 206 different bones that provide 5 main functions: Support mechanism for muscle and tissue Protection for organs Movement with bones, muscles, and joints Storing minerals and blood cells Growth Skeletal System 2.2 Bones are Formed by Ossification Some bones (such as the flat bones of your skull) in the body are formed in a similar stage to connective tissue. The process is known as direct or intramembranous ossification. Other bones are made up of cartilaginous matter, this is developed from future bone in the embryo which then dissolves and is replaced with other bone cells. -
The Muscular System
THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM COMPILED BY HOWIE BAUM 1 Muscles make up the bulk of the body and account for 1/3 of its weight.!! Blood vessels and nerves run to every muscle, helping control and regulate each muscle’s function. The muscular system creates body heat and also moves the: Bones of the Skeletal system Food through Digestive system Blood through the Circulatory system Fluids through the Excretory system MUSCLE TISSUE The body has 3 main types of muscle tissue 1) Skeletal, 2) Smooth, and 3) Cardiac SKELETAL MUSCLE SMOOTH MUSCLE CARDIAC MUSCLE Skeletal muscles attach to and move bones by contracting and relaxing in response to voluntary messages from the nervous system. Skeletal muscle tissue is composed of long cells called muscle fibers that have a striated appearance. Muscle fibers are organized into bundles supplied by blood vessels and innervated by motor neurons. Muscle structure Skeletal (striated or voluntary) muscle consists of densely packed groups of hugely elongated cells known as myofibers. These are grouped into bundles (fascicles). A typical myofiber is 2–3 centimeters ( 3/4–1 1/5 in) long and 0.05millimeters (1/500 inch) in diameter and is composed of narrower structures – myofibrils. These contain thick and thin myofilaments made up mainly of the proteins actin and myosin. Numerous capillaries keep the muscle supplied with the oxygen and glucose needed to fuel contraction. Skeletal Muscles • Skeletal muscles attach to bones by tendons (connective tissue) and enable movement. • Skeletal muscles are mostly voluntary Feel the back of your ankle to feel your Achilles tendon - the largest tendon in your body. -
Is the Skeleton Male Or Female? the Pelvis Tells the Story
Activity: Is the Skeleton Male or Female? The pelvis tells the story. Distinct features adapted for childbearing distinguish adult females from males. Other bones and the skull also have features that can indicate sex, though less reliably. In young children, these sex-related features are less obvious and more difficult to interpret. Subtle sex differences are detectable in younger skeletons, but they become more defined following puberty and sexual maturation. What are the differences? Skeletal system fact sheet • At birth the human skeleton is made up of around 300 bones. By adulthood, some bones have fused together to end up with 206 bones. • Human bones grow continually from birth till our mid 20's. Our skeleton's bone mass is at its maximum density around the age of 30. • If broken our bones will re-grow and repair themselves. Often doctors will place a cast on splint to make sure these bones repair straight and true. • The axial skeleton part of the human skeleton has 80 bones. It includes the vertebral column, the rib cage and the skull and helps us maintain our upright posture, by spreading the weight in the head, and upper areas down to the lower areas near the hips. • The appendicular skeletal section of our skeleton has 126 bones. It includes the pectoral (shoulder) girdles, the pelvic girdle and the bones of the lower and upper limbs. Its function is for movement of the body and to protect some organs. • The human skeletal system has six major functions including the production of blood cells, for support, for movement, for protection, for storage of ions and endocrine regulation. • The longest bone in the human body is the thigh bone called the femur. • The smallest bone found in the human body is located in the middle ear. The staples (or stirrup) bone is only 2.8 millimetres (0.11 inches) long. • Like our skin, the human body's bones are also constantly worn down and re-made, to the point where every 7 years we essentially have a new bone. -

Purpose: To perform a quantitative anatomic evaluation of the (1) coracoid process, specifically the attachment sites of the conjoint tendon, the pectoralis minor, the coracoacromial ligament (CAL), and the coracoclavicular (CC) ligaments in relation to pertinent osseous and soft tissue landmarks; (2) CC ligaments’ attachments on the clavicle; and (3) CAL attachment on the acromion in relation to surgically relevant anatomic landmarks to assist in planning of the Latarjet procedure, acromioclavicular (AC) joint reconstructions, and CAL resection distances avoiding iatrogenic injury to sur- rounding structures. Methods: Ten nonpaired fresh-frozen human cadaveric shoulders (mean age 52 years, range 33- 64 years) were included in this study. A 3-dimensional coordinate measuring device was used to quantify the location of pertinent bony landmarks and soft tissue attachment areas. The ligament and tendon attachment perimeters and center points on the coracoid, clavicle, and acromion were identified and subsequently dissected off the bone. Coordinates of points along the perimeters of attachment sites were used to calculate areas, whereas coordinates of center points were used to determine distances between surgically relevant attachment sites and pertinent bony landmarks. -

ABSTRACT The question of how tetrapod limbs evolved from fins is one of the great puzzles of evolutionary biology. While palaeontologists, developmental biologists, and geneticists have made great strides in explaining the origin and early evolution of limb skeletal structures, that of the muscles remains largely unknown. The main reason is the lack of consensus about appendicular muscle homology between the closest living relatives of early tetrapods: lobe-finned fish and crown tetrapods. In the light of a recent study of these homologies, we re-examined osteological correlates of muscle attachment in the pectoral girdle, humerus, radius, and ulna of early tetrapods and their close relatives. Twenty-nine extinct and six extant sarcopterygians were included in a meta-analysis using information from the literature and from original specimens, when possible. We analysed these osteological correlates using parsimony-based character optimization in order to reconstruct muscle anatomy in ancestral lobe-finned fish, tetrapodomorph fish, stem tetrapods, and crown tetrapods.
