Not only was it a record-breaker for total attendance, but FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine also broke a personal participation record by sending 13 members of their staff. CVMer's attending covered a broad spectrum of experience and Center expertise - all the way from a summer student intern (Ms. Courtney Coddington) to two Office Directors (Dr. Steve Vaughn, Office of New Animal Drug Evaluation and Dr. Meg Oeller, Office of Minor Use and Minor Species). HRISHI: It’s episode 22, and it’s called ‘What kind of day has it been’. JOSH: It was written by Aaron Sorkin, it was directed by Tommy Schlamme, and it originally aired on May 17th, in the year 2000. HRISHI: Here’s a synopsis.. JOSH: A hrynopsis? HRISHI: [laughs] Sure.. JOSH: I just wanted to make sure because, you know, it’s an important distinction. HRISHI: An American fighter jet goes down in Iraq, and a rescue mission ensues to find the pilot. But, it’s a covert operation, so CJ has to mislead the press. Toby’s brother is onboard the space shuttle Columbia, but it’s having mechanical difficulties and can’t land. Plus, Josh has to meet with the Vice President to bring him around to the Bartlet administration's plans for campaign finance. President Bartlet travels to Rosalind, Virginia, to speak at the Newseum and give a live town hall meeting. But as they’re exiting, S#&* goes down and shots ring out. JOSH: Well done HRISHI: Before we even get into the episode though, Josh, I want to ask you about the title. ‘What kind of day has it been’ is a very Sorkin title, it’s been the finale for lots of things that he’s done before. -

Spatial Competition, Innovation and Institutions: The Industrial Revolution and the Great Divergence∗ Klaus Desmet Avner Greif Stephen L. Parente SMU and CEPR Stanford University University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign February 2017 Abstract Why do some countries industrialize much earlier than others? One widely-accepted answer is that markets need to be large enough for producers to find it profitable to bear the fixed cost of introducing modern technologies. This insight, however, has limited explanatory power, as illustrated by England having industrialized nearly two centuries before China. This paper argues that a market-size-only theory is insufficient because it ignores that many of the modern technologies associated with the Industrial Revolution were fiercely resisted by skilled craftsmen who expected a reduction in earnings. Once we take into account the incentives to resist by factor suppliers' organizations such as craft guilds, we theoretically show that industrialization no longer depends on market size, but on the degree of spatial competition between the guilds' jurisdictions. We substantiate the relevance of our theory for the timing of industrialization in England and China (i) by providing historical and empirical evidence on the relation between spatial competition, craft guilds and innovation, and (ii) by showing that a model of our theory calibrated to historical data on spatial competition correctly predicts the timing of industrial- ization in both countries. Tips for Writing a Curriculum Vitae A curriculum vitae or CV is an expanded, detailed version of your resume that provides an employer with in-depth information about your experience and training. If you are searching for a college-level teaching position, you will be expected to submit a current CV along with other supplemental materials, such as a cover letter, teaching philosophy, recommendations and possibly a sample syllabus. Search committees expect CVs for full-time college teaching positions to be longer than 1-2 pages—more veteran educators may have a CV that exceeds 10 pages. Even though long CVs are permissible, it’s important to be judicious about what you include so that your CV is easy to scan and digest. This handout will provide an overview of the main components that should be included in a CV, best practices for formatting, and sample CVs for you to work from. The Basics Always keep the employer’s needs in mind. Study the job description carefully and then adapt your CV to address the position’s specific responsibilities and qualifications. If private teaching is the focus of a faculty position, you will want to highlight all of your studio teaching experience first. If ensemble coaching and theory instruction are also part of the position, you should find a way to frame your experience so that you convey to a search committee that you are also capable of meeting these demands. Gross∗ Harvard Business School and NBER December 30, 2018 Forthcoming at The Review of Economics and Statistics Abstract: Though fundamental to innovation and essential to many industries and occupations, individual creativity has received limited attention as an economic behavior and has historically proven difficult to study. This paper studies the incentive effects of competition on individuals' creative production. Using a sample of commercial logo design competitions, and a novel, content-based measure of originality, I find that intensi- fying competition induces agents to produce original, untested ideas over tweaking their earlier work, but heavy competition drives them to stop investing altogether. The results yield lessons for the management of creative workers and for the implementation of competitive procurement mechanisms for innovation.
