September 29, 2001 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Lev Vasilievich Shubnikov, one of the most out- standing experimental physicists of the twentieth century. Shubnikov was the founder and director of the first cryogen- ics laboratory in the USSR, and his pioneering work laid the foundation for many extremely important fields in modern condensed-matter physics. In terms of the quantity and the level of the results obtained in various fields of physics, he can be placed in the same rank of such giants of experimen- tal physics as Faraday, Kelvin, and Kamerlingh Onnes. The Best in British Soul on Austin City Limits with Emeli Sandé and Michael Kiwanuka New Episode Premieres November 9th on PBS Austin, TX—November 8, 2013—Austin City Limits (ACL) showcases British soul with a brand new episode featuring two uniquely original singer-songwriters—chart-topping Scottish songstress Emeli Sandé and UK sensation Michael Kiwanuka making their ACL debuts. Sandé performs hits from her breakthrough album Our Version of Events, while Kiwanuka plays tunes from his debut Home Again. The episode premieres November 9th on PBS Stations. ACL airs weekly on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings for times) and full episodes are made available online at acltv.com immediately following the initial broadcast. Sandé has achieved breakout success in her native UK and stateside with the striking debut, Our Version of Events, which was the biggest-selling album in 2012 in the UK and toppled The Beatles' long-standing album chart record for the most consecutive weeks spent in the top 10 (an astounding 66 weeks). Sandé emerged as the big winner at this year's 2013 Brit Awards, winning a pair of awards, including the coveted Album of the Year prize. Memory, and the ability to reflect and find meaning in our experiences, is an important cornerstone of engaging the past. Decisions I’ve made, who I am, what I hope to become, and how recognizable or unrecognizable my past self is to the present are some of the mental fragments that ebb and flow throughout my consciousness on a near daily basis. What triggers these thoughts? I believe that memories—no matter how detrimental or pleasing, significant or forgettable—become a true anomaly of how our inner-consciousness operates or developments.
