Byrd Dr. Crab Orchard, WV 25827 May 2021 • Glade Living 17 and when we next met in a social setting.” Both were in a wedding party, “Soup” as best man, Carla as a bridesmaid. The chemistry sparked that time and continues to this day. Small- “I had toned down and matured enough that she gave me a Town second chance, thank heavens,” he says gratefully. Together they’ve weathered the pandemic lockdown Kids and an old-fashioned snowy winter in their snug one- level ranch home on Preston Place here at Glade, and Living are enjoying their “empty nest.” Their sons, Luke and Kirby, recently spread their wings and moved out. Luke, It Up In now 27, is a sales rep with E.I.N. in Beckley, and Kirby (22) lives in Lewisburg and works as a correctional Glade! officer at Southern Regional Jail. Both boys, who are in serious relationships now, were raised in Mullens, where the Campbells settled after tying the knot. John was working in real estate and later as a pharmaceutical rep while Carla went to work for Marshall and WVU as a program coordinator for rural health programs after graduating from Concord. At the time there just weren’t any teaching jobs available, so she had to look outside of education in order to stay in the area she remem- bers. For the past eight years, Carla has been using her

CAMPBELLS education degree and is a dedicated teacher at Shady Elementary and loving every minute of it, even during covid. John changed career paths in 2011 when he went

THE to work with old teammate Jeff “Bubblegum” Mullins at E.I.N. where he is a valued part of their sales force.

One of the beautiful things about growing up in rural West Virginia is that those small-town values that so many of us were raised on travel with us wherever we settle. Glade residents John and Carla Campbell are poster children for such sentiments. Born in Mullens and raised in the winning culture that was prevalent in that small Wyoming County berg where sports were the heartbeat of the community, Carla was a Rebel cheerleader while John was the point guard on championship basketball teams and a hard-throwing pitcher on the diamond who later took the hill for the Mountaineers. Although their graduations from Mullens High School were

your neighbors meet your several years apart, remembering their first impressions of each other makes them giggle today. John chuckles when he recalls evening teenager play in “Tin Can Alley,” a local hangout for youngsters before being called home by darkness. “She was a female* and just young enough not to be taken seriously in any games or competitions. Besides, she was from the other side of the tracks.” For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of visiting the home of the Rebels, the town is bisected by railroad tracks that for decades hauled coal out of Wyoming County to the steel mills in Pittsburgh and the shipyards of Norfolk.

Carla, likewise, was unimpressed with their initial encounter some years later as young adults. “He was a little too rowdy and came on a little too strong for me. Definitely not my type,” she laughs today. John remembers sheepishly maybe the best mulligan he ever got. “I had a couple years to grow up between that encounter

Life wasn’t always rosy for the Campbells. Kirby developed health issues six weeks after birth and had to be airlifted to UVA. Diagnosed with aortic stenosis, he has had three open-heart surgeries but now lives a normal life thanks to a mechanical valve in his heart. With his athletic

options somewhat limited in his youth, his father decided it would be a good time to introduce him to golf at their local course, Twin Falls State Park. The lanky, long-hitting Kirby took to it like a duck to water. His infatuation with game prompted the family’s move to Glade Springs so he could fully immerse himself in the game. It didn’t hurt that mom and dad also fell in love with the people and lifestyle offered by living here.

As the old adage says when one door closes, another opens. So it was that soon an opportunity for Carla to apply her skills and passion as an educator at SSES presented itself, and like- wise, John’s old teammate came calling. Nearly four years ago Carla faced her own heart issues. She had been working out with her sister doing “Grit,” a very rigorous fitness regimen when she began to feel “a little funny.” Later, walking the hills in Morgantown at a WVU football game, the feelings returned. Thanks to assistance from another old Rebel, former MU head coach Greg White, Carla was able to get speedy admittance to CAMC. Diagnosed with an occlusion, that resulted in her being “gone” for about 18 minutes while doctors worked feverishly, the Campbells’ future was in question. “The scariest time of my life,” is how John describes those long drawn-out minutes.

Now fully recovered, Carla and John share their empty nest with their other baby, a 13-year-old Whippet, aptly named “MJ” in this hoops-loving family. Carla says, “We love our neighbors and all that living at Glade affords us.” They often take part in activities offered here like mixology, the member guest golf tourney, and dining and social gathering with friends at Bunkers or in their home. Members of Glade Community Church, the dismissed by both as just a coincidence, giving more credit to HGTV Campbells know how blessed they are. than their small town heritage for their color schemes. Nevertheless, Carla sums up the couple’s outlook this way. “We celebrate each day Chatham Lake is another of their favorite Glade amenities where as a gift, and there aren’t many places better for celebrating than they enjoy kayaking, fishing, and swimming.
