We stand by what we do and we will be here year after year… Shane Pilato is the landscape designer, sales person and coordinator for the company. Shane graduated with high honors from Cobleskill University in 1997 where he studied landscape design & horticulture and was inducted into the phi theta kappa international honor society. Shane was also the youngest Master Gardener in Greene County when he completed training in 1990 through Cornell Cooperative Extension. As a teenager, Shane started mowing lawns and doing odd chores around the yard for various people. Driven by a passion for plants and his love of outdoor spaces, he stuck to it. Early on, Shane decided that he wanted to be a landscape designer and own a professional landscape company. Shane’s old fashioned work ethic and stubborn “stick to it” outlook has won him many friendships, long term clients and much professional respect. Growing up in a family of tradesmen and carpenters had also earned Shane an additional edge in his field. “The company is not limited to just installing green bushes around the foundation. If the client desires a pergola over the patio, we build it!” With a love for every type of design, from historically accurate period gardens to ultra contemporary houses and Japanese gardens, diversification is the key for Shane. “The world is a big place and filled with many types of people. Aesthetically, the client is always right. My goal as an effective designer is to learn to appreciate who my clients are and what they love.” The goal to keep moving forward in his career is bringing Shane around the world. On May 1st, 2004, he headed to Europe to extensively study many facets of European design. France is the main focus this season, from the overwhelming structure at Versailles to the loose composition of Claude Monet’s gardens at Giverny. William VanVechten has been with the company since inception and continues to be a driving force for the success of the company. Bill works hand in hand with our staff and the client to insure that the project(s) are being installed to the clients liking. Through rain, snow and exhausting heat, Bill’s commitment to getting a project right the first time & on schedule is unwavering. Bill’s accrued experiences have earned him many talents along the way. His expertise in installing Hardscape items like stone walls, patios, plant materials, lighting and all the elements in the landscape flow seamlessly together under his direction. Landscape Design & Consultation. Consider hiring a professional designer! Many theories surround the concepts of good design. Some designs may be invoked from that of a childhood memory, or from an inspiration or feeling that a place gives you. Maybe it’s as simple as a look that you like or a look that you must match to a style of architecture; maybe it’s invoked by a simple need or function. Whatever the motivating force, there are several principles that an experienced designer is familiar with. Whether you’re designing a house, interior decorating or designing a landscape, certain principles are always taken into consideration. A landscape designer can help you with scale & proportion, balance, color, texture, composition, function and the construction of your project. Take anyone of these elements out of the design and the composition may seem haphazard. Landscape design is probably one of the most complicated facets of design because of the dynamic nature of the landscape. Selecting the proper plants, bloom sequence, soil types, available light, maintenance requirements and so on, are the difficult items that an experienced designer can help you with. A successful designer can pull all of this together, even in difficult situations. We work closely with our clients throughout the entire process. The Design / Coordination Process When you decide to contact us, via phone or email, have ready a simple overview of the project. This allows us to bring proper literature and samples for you to review. If you’re at a complete loss and not sure what you may need or are lacking, please let us know. We can help you. Step One-Initial Meeting o The design process usually begins with an initial viewing of the project. At the first meeting, we will discuss your objectives for the project, both visual & functional, and gather site information and photos. o Help us help you. If you want a sidewalk, is it cobblestone or bluestone; straight or meandering? Would you like a garden to dabble in all summer, or one you simply watch and enjoy? Lighting for entertainment or accent? Saving pictures from magazine articles or any visual aid will help us identify the look you like…a picture is worth a thousand words. o We urge prospective clients to think carefully about the scope of the work to be done, priority of projects and budget. Try to find a reasonable figure for a starting budget. Knowing your budget allows us to prepare realistically. o By the end of our first meeting, we must have enough information to leave with specific measurements and the overall geometry necessary to prepare a concept & begin pricing during step two. Step Two- Concept Review o During step two, we will review a concept sketch and possibly other visual aides we utilize to help you envision the concept. At this time, we will have cost comparisons so we can identify specific materials to be used and so on. It’s crucial at this to work out as many details as possible at this time so we can prepare a detailed proposal and price. Step Three: Final Review o During step three, we will review all the details of the project and the final pricing. Our ultimate goal during this step is to insure that both parties are on the same page. It is very important for you to know what you’re getting and for us to know what is expected of us. At this point, we should be ready to get to work. Master Plans and Specifications: o Master plans and specifications are necessary to submit for building permits, homeowner associations, municipalities and commercial projects. We follow the steps in the design process necessary to assimilate all the details your master landscape design will have. Specifications are written details, explaining the materials to be used and methods of construction. If a master plan is what you need, before we commit ink to paper, we need to know all the details necessary to do the landscape project in its entirety. It is much like doing the project on paper first. Flora & Gardens Plants are the dynamic elements that bring your landscape to life and help in defining space. There are few rules governing how we can use plants. One major advantage of using North Country for your planting needs is selection. By not stocking most of what we sell, we are never in a situation where we need to push our own stock. This affords us the ability to find the best plants possible. We work with a number of growers and nurseries around the area to find the healthiest plants available. We are fully equipped to install any size tree from small to exceptionally large! Plants and Plantings o Shade trees o Vines o Evergreen trees o Annuals o Shrubs o Perennials Garden Ideas o Planting beds & borders o Seasonal gardens o Cutting gardens o Perennial garden o Butterfly Gardens o Period & Theme gardens o Rock Gardens Outdoor Construction & Hardscape Experience in landscape construction allows NCL to go over the top with all of your Hardscape and outdoor construction needs.
