    JOHN STANDEFER BIO Winner of the 2002 National Fingerstyle Guitar Contest and open division winner of the 2004 International Home of the Legends Competition, John Standefer is a true master of fingerstyle guitar. He began playing the guitar in 1963, soon learning the Chet Atkins style by ear as well as studying music in a conservatory. These early accomplishments gave John a great start towards a career in music. By age 16, he had begun a lifetime as a professional guitarist and teacher. His musical interests continued to expand to include folk, pop, jazz and bossa nova music (among others). As a result, the guitar arrangements he has developed contain a surprisingly colorful blend of styles and genres. Over his life John has traveled throughout the U.S. and abroad performing concerts, teaching master classes and instructing Christian guitarists through his highly acclaimed Praise Guitar Workshop. John currently performs and teaches yearly at such events as the Chet Atkins Convention in Nashville and the Christian Musician Summit in Seattle. He has also performed and/or recorded with many other guitar greats as well, including Tommy Emmanuel, John Knowles, Pat Kirtley, Guy Van Duser, Richard Smith and Doug Smith. John also writes regularly for Fingerstyle Guitar and Christian Musician magazines. Recently John was inducted into the Clark County Hall of Fame in Vancouver, Washington where he also teaches a limited number of private guitar lessons. Besides these live appearances, John has produced numerous CDs, books, videos and TAB arrangements, which can be found on the ‘store’ page of this website.     1 THE BLARNEY PILGRIM WORLD OF CELTIC FINGERSTYLE GUITAR VOLUME TWO This collection of traditional music from Ireland and Scot- land arranged for solo guitar is the result of a passionate study and adaptation of the tradition by the musicians featured here. The idea of arranging this music for solo guitar is still relatively new – the steel-stringed acoustic guitar appears in the Irish- Scottish tradition only in relatively recent times. Looking back less than a century, you would find this music performed on fiddle, pipes, button accordion, flutes and whistles, in solo and ensemble settings, but never guitar, even in its basic role of providing rhythm and chord backup. The guitar, in its basic role of accompaniment in folk-type music, had been (and still is) used as a chordal instrument. But the sound of Celtic traditional music requires, above all else, attention to just two elements: melody and rhythm. Stark melody, often excluding all chordal accompaniment, is a signa- ture of Irish and Scottish music. Examples are numerous. Many traditional Irish and Scottish fiddlers perform solo in a this style. The intricacy of their playing comes in the form of precise nu- ance and ornamentation, not chords, harmony, or counterpoint. A similar characteristic is carried over to Celtic ensemble play- ing – even with a group of players on different instruments, it’s typical for everyone to play the melody in unison. Beyond the dominant importance of melody, there is the el- ement of accented rhythms. Celtic dance rhythms – jigs, reels, hornpipes – are built upon simple meters of 3, 4, or 6 beats per 2 measure, but with accents that give each form its unique rhyth- mic feel.

As they say just about everywhere around here, “About dang time!” Maybe you’re one of those people who like the cold weather, but my old bones like it warm. However, I reserve the right to change my mind come August. I read a short article the other day about that little music/interactive/film festival that comes to Austin about this time every year. Combine that event with the rodeo that came to town at the same time and you have a mess of folks dealing with crowded streets, increased traffic, and packed businesses. A fun time for all! But, the crux of the article by Peter Blackstock on austin360.com is that “...if major corporations really want to funnel their SXSW budgets toward a worthy cause, look no further than the musicians who, more than anyone else, make SXSW what it is.” Couldn’t agree more. Even though I don’t play professionally or even on a casual basis for pay, I can totally understand this sentiment. You’d be surprised how many inquiries we get here at CTBA central from someone or some organization who’s looking for us to supply them with a band for their special event that’s coming to town next week. Oh, and they have no budget for the band but, “Just think of how much exposure they’ll get.” It’s hard to buy groceries with all that exposure. Of course, we point them to the CTBA list of bands on our website and hope they can come up with some money for the band but I can’t help but wonder if they realize just what they’re asking.
