This established a binary paradigm between Americans and Muslims, where Americans represented “us” whereas Muslims represented “them.” Through a qualitative analysis of the main characters in the post-9/11 terrorism-show, Homeland, season one (2011), as well as an analysis of the opening sequence and the overall narrative in the show, this thesis argues that this binary system of “us” and “them” is no longer black and white, but blurred, and hard to define. My analysis indicates that several of the enemies in the show break with the stereotypical portrayal of Muslims as crude, violent fanatics.

After conducting an initial pilot study consisting of one episode from each of the seven seasons, we decided to focus on the ideolect and slang of intelligence circles, deixis and pronominal reference, irony, variations in register, patterns of repetition and doublespeak for this purpose. This paper concludes with a discussion of how each of these analytical tools work toward either strengthening Carrie Mathison’s power or indicating her disempowerment in relation to her social context and working environment. Keywords: Power; Madness; Women Empowerment; Deixis; Pronominal Reference; TV Series. 1. Introduction This study examines the language used in a TV series that represents a predominantly male working environment, the world of intelligence, when a key female empowered protagonist becomes disempowered due to her mental illness, bipolarity. • Homeland's Discourse
REVISTA DE LENGUAS MODERNAS, N.° 31, 2019 / 63-71 ISSN IMPRESO: 1659-1933 ISSN ELECTRÓniCO: 2215-5643 Homeland’s Discourse El discurso en Homeland DANIEL E. JOSEPHY-HERNÁNDEZ Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica Abstract This article concentrates on the discourse employed in Homeland, a television show pro- duced in the United States. After a discourse analysis of three characters and the set- tings of the third season, it is easy to conclude that the show encourages and display stereotypical portrayals of not only the US and the government’s secret-service agencies, but also of Iran and the Middle East in general. It foments an Orientalist image of the Middle-East (the near Orient) as both an exotic place (as explained by Said’s 1978 book Orientalism) and a chaotic, underdeveloped one full of terrorists that must be saved and purged by the United States.

Structures of Power 2 Introduction For those who know me, it would come as no surprise that the topic of this paper has switched approximately 329 different times. At the start of the semester, I was going to write a paper arguing the need for a feminist perspective in international relations. My topic, shortly after, switched to an evaluation of humanitarian intervention in foreign policy. However, as I was scrolling through Instagram and Facebook the day after Halloween, exactly one week ago, I saw at least a dozen people dressed in culturally and racially insensitive costumes. While many say it is “all in good fun” to be dressed for Halloween as a Mexican Mariachi performer, a Native American tribal chief or Saudi Arabian oil Sheik, I argue otherwise.

  • Homeland and Orientalism: an Examination of Arab Muslim Identity and US Nationalism Gemma Kumaraea Abstract: Homeland Is a Popular Show with American Audiences
Volume 1 • Issue 1 z.umn.edu/MURAJ Homeland and Orientalism: An Examination of Arab Muslim Identity and US Nationalism Gemma Kumaraea Abstract: Homeland is a popular show with American audiences. However, it has also garnered harsh criticism for its representations of Arab Muslim communities. Critics argue that these representations present Arab Mus- lims as violent, one dimensional, and primitive, all of which are tropes present in Orientalism as defined by Said in his revolutionary 1978 book. Orientalism frames the Middle East as a negative inversion of the West, creating a setup in which the East is portrayed as primitive and inferior in comparison to the mod- ern and superior West. This paper examines the presence of Orientalism in the show’s representations of both Arab Muslim identity and of US nationalism. This study links concepts of Orientalism to the produc- tion of narratives surrounding Arab Muslim identity and US nationalism. My research question therefore is as follows: how does Homeland represent Arab Muslim identity and US nationalism in the context of Orientalism as defined by Said? That is to say, how does Homeland frame and link Arab Muslim identi- ty and American nationalism as inherently antithetical to one another? My examination concludes that despite the appearance of complex narratives in Homeland, the writing falls victim to the same outdated stereotypes of Arab Muslim identity and US nationalism that are rooted in Orientalism. “Homeland is an edge-of-your-seat sensation,” ac- millions (O’Connell, 2013 ; Otterson, 2017). cording to the official website of the show.
