Prunus Serrulata J Prunus serrulata J. Lindley Japanese Flowering Cherry (Cerasus lannesiana, Cerasus leveilleana, Cerasus serrulata, Prunus jamasakura, Prunus lannesiana, Prunus leveilleana, Prunus tenuiflora) • Prunus serrulata is also known as Hill Cherry, Japanese Cherry, Japanese Mountain Cherry, Korean Mountain Cherry, or Oriental Cherry; Sato Zakura is the Japanese name for this species; the species type is a medium to large tree, 50 to 70 tall, in its native China, Korea, and Japan with a variable vase-shaped to upright oval crown, however the species type is seldom encountered in the U.S. nursery trade, with the various cultivars offered instead; masses of single or double pink, or less commonly white, early spring flowers are the primary asset of this species; the small blue-black cherries are seldom produced in southern climates; cultivars are usually grafted on another species such as P. avium as standards; the lack of heat tolerance in the rootstock probably adds to the difficulties this species experiences in our heat and low chilling conditions; most of the selected cultivars are smaller than the species type, maturing in the 20 to 30 range; most genotypes are cold tolerant to USDA hardiness zone 5, but suffer in the heat of zones 7 and warmer, particularly in our region where summers can be brutal; it would be interesting to see if grafting cultivars onto rootstocks from species with more heat tolerance could improve performance; the specific epithet refers to the small saw tooth leaf margins. • 'Kwanzan' ('Kanzan', 'Sekiyama'), Kwanzan Cherry, is the most frequently encountered cultivar of this species in the U.S. nursery trade; it forms a vase-shaped crown usually grafted atop a standard at chest to head high and is covered in a cloud of double rosy pink carnation-like clusters of 1 to 1½diameter spring flowers; in northern areas this cultivar matures as a medium size tree, but is usually a small tree in zone 7 or south if it survives; reasonably durable in cooler climates, it is prone to borer infestations and inadequate chilling in warmer climates. With the exception of the American wild cherry species P. emarginata and P. pensylvanica, all host plants are cultivated in Europe as fruit trees or ornamental plants; sweet cherry and P. mahaleb are also endemic wild species. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION The disease, which originated in Japan, is probably now distributed world-wide in latently infected ornamental cherries.

Despite recent advances in apricot research, much is still to be done to improve its productivity and environmental adaptability. The availability of wild apricot germplasms with economically interesting traits is a strong incentive to increase research panels toward improving its economic, environmental and nutritional characteristics. New technologies and genomic studies have generated a large amount of raw data that the mining and exploitation can help decrypt the biology of apricot and enhance its agronomic values. Here, we outline recent findings in relation to apricot production, pomological and nutraceutical properties. In particular, we retrace its origin from central Asia and the path it took to attain Europe and other production areas around the Mediterranean basin while locating it in the rosaceae family and referring to its genetic diversities and new attempts of classification. The production, nutritional, and nutraceutical importance of apricot are recapped in an easy readable and comparable way. We also highlight and discuss the effects of late frost damages on apricot production over different growth stages, from swollen buds to green fruits formation. Issues related to the length of production season and biotic and abiotic environmental challenges are also discussed with future perspective on how to lengthen the production season without compromising the fruit quality and productivity. Watson2 INTRODUCTION Yoshino Cherry grows quickly to 20 feet, has beautiful bark marked with prominent lenticels but is a relatively short-lived tree (Fig. 1). It has upright to horizontal branching, making it ideal for planting along walks and over patios. The white to pink flowers which occur in early spring before the leaves develop are sometimes damaged by late frosts or very windy conditions. In Washington, l’hiladelphia, New York and other eastern cities extensive plantings of them can be seen in late April when they first burst into bloom, for the flowers have the most desirable trait of appearing before the leaves (in the case of most single flowered forms) or with the leaves in the case of the double flowered forms. Certainly in no cases are the flowers hidden by the fohage! In New England there are some that are perfectly hardy, some that are hardy in all but the most severe winters, and others which should not be grown at all, either because they are tender, or be- cause they are similar in flower to some of the better species and varieties. The Arnold Arboretum has been responsible for the introduction of many of these oriental trees and has planted numerous varieties over the years. Charles Sprague Sargent, Ernest Henry Wilson and others have been outstanding in the study and introduction of many of these plants, so it may prove helpful to gar- deners in New England to review some information about these plants at this t~me, as they come into flower. The Sargent Cherry is the tallest of all, being a standard tree up to 75 feet in height, although m this country few trees have exceeded 50 feet.

    Trees to Avoid Planting in the Midwest and Some Excellent Alternatives Dr. Laura G. Jull Dept. of Horticulture, UW-Madison Trees provide us with many environmental, aesthetic, functional, and economic benefits. Tree selection is one of the most important considerations when a homeowner, nurserymen, or landscaper is deciding what species to grow or plant. Many questions need to be answered including size, location, site characteristics, aesthetic features, pest susceptibility, hardiness, and maintenance considerations. Some trees can become a maintenance headache due to their inherent pest problems or lack of structural integrity. The trees represented in this story have not generally performed well in urban and suburban areas of the Midwest. Some are susceptible to insects and diseases, and some have severe structural problems such as being weak- wooded or prone to girdling roots or included bark formation. Others have cultural problems such as intolerance to high pH, road salt, drought, and poor drainage. A few tree species are invasive and should be avoided near sensitive areas or seed dispersal into woodlands could occur. Some of these trees may do quite well in other parts of the U.S., so my intention is not to apply a blanket statement for all these trees to all situations. Invasiveness and pest susceptibility can vary geographically. The article is based on more than 25 years of field experience and data collected from numerous states’ plant disease and insect diagnostic clinics, and conversations with arborists, nurseries, landscapers, and extension personnel. There are alternative species that can be used and are mentioned here. These alternative tree species have performed well in USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 4b.
