The news was on, but no one was really watching. They were watching Mr. Tanaka demonstrate some weird martial arts move. Then an interesting story came on. And in local news, Station Squares criminals have been plagued by a mysterious vigilante. He had been described as pale, with dark hair, a white shirt, and long black coat. The police are baffled by this humans actions. More on this as it comes. Amy hugged Sonic tight, much to his dismay. Sonic, you dont think hell come after us, do you? she asked. Relax, Ames, hes like us, a good guy. Hes going after criminals. Tails had pulled up a search page on his laptop. Hey guys, look at this! The photo showed Rouge and Shadow, but the background was what caused everyone to stare. Thats gotta be him! said Chris. The pictures showed a blurred him, jumping behind a building. The group was unaware they were under surveillance. He let his coat blow behind him. Chao? asked the little creature at his side. He petted it absently, as it rubbed against his leg. Relax, Blush. Well get you back to her soon. The blue hedgehog particularly interested him. But there would be time for that later. He left, leaving the strange domestic scene. Here you are Maam. He handed the chao to its owner. Thanks kid. What do I owe ya? Rouge the Bat, formerly a government spy, asked. The human shook his head. Nothing. Well, come in and dry off, at least. He stepped in the door, and immediately took in his surroundings, looking around warily, some kind of martial arts instincts kicking in. Well, thanks kid. You sure I cant pay you? As if I would. He shook his head again. He decided to talk in a fake voice, just in case. It was my pleasure. He said, or, rasped. He nodded at her, then rose from the couch and left. Rouge stared at him as he left. Hmm. Ill have to keep my eye on him& Sonic raced around town, saying hi to the people he knew. Quiet day. He commented to Amy, who had been hanging on his leg for the last mile. Too quiet Sonic. She said. He rolled his eyes. Cmon, lets he- hold it! He dashed up a building, next to the human up there before he could react. Youre that vigilante! Why are you doing this? The human, taken by surprise, answered. I do whats right. Same as you. Aw snap, I talked in my real voice. Too late Why, are you going to turn me in? Sonic smiled. Wouldnt think of it. Thanks for the help. Would you like to join us? He actually nodded. Back at the Thorndyke mansion, he was tightlipped. They asked him questions, and he responded politely. But quick. His dark eyes darted around, searching for a threat. Then he was asked his name. Rather accusingly, actually, by Tails. He shook his head. Amy pushed Tails out of the way. We really cant thank you properly, until we know your name. Amy said. The human sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose. No one has asked me that in a long time. My name is Ekyt. Sweet! Thats an awesome name! How come nobodys asked you? she said. Because Im alone. Have been for a year. Amy felt her heart soften. Cream, bring Cheese here. Chao are a good judge of character. Cream brought Cheese over, and the human bent down to let him smell his hand. Cheese did, looking at the humans fingerless gloves, before a heart popped over his head. Well, if Cheese thinks youre cool, so do we. Sonic welcomed him. Now we just gotta introduce you to Knuckles&and Shadow. 2 - The Wrong Stuff Ekyt walked alone. Nothing new. He wasnt lonely. Just devoid of feeling. Some punk tried to mug him. He didnt answer. A simple whack from his staff took care of the problem. The police could take it from there. He went back home. Home. That was a weird word to him. He had loving parents, and they supported him. But he couldnt endanger them. That was why he lived alone. A life. That was foreign. He didnt have friends. He had plenty of enemies, but they were all in jail. As for a girlfriend. He was partial to echidnas (Check out my other fanfic, the original Next Guardian! Youll see what I mean!) but they were practically extinct. Rouge? Business. Only business. He didnt know what to think of her. Strictly speaking, she was bad. But somehow, she seemed to like him. Hmmm. She was attractive, no doubt. But he had been alone for the better part of a year. At least that was how it seemed. No time for feelings. No time for emotions. He left, thinking all the way. His mind never stopped. No. Romance was out of the question. At least for now. He needed to think& Not that he had anything else to do, aside from busting the occasional criminal. He went to the casino, his regular place. Whatll it be? asked the bartender. Coke. They should know by now. He noticed a purplish hedgehog at the end of the bar.

U.S. Coast Guard Oral History Program Interviewee: Marvin J. Perrett, USCGR World War II U. S. Coast Guard Veteran Interviewer: Scott Price, Deputy Historian Date of Interview: 18 June 2003 Place: U. S. Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, D.C. Marvin Perrett joined the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and served aboard the Coast Guard-manned attack transport USS Bayfield (APA-33) as a coxswain of one of the Bayfield's landing craft. He was a veteran of the invasions of Normandy, Southern France, Iwo Jima and Okinawa and he even survived the "Exercise Tiger" debacle prior to the Normandy invasion. Although each of these events has received extensive coverage, his story, and the story of the thousands of young men who manned the boats that landed troops on enemy beaches, is little- known. It seems that the men who transported the troops to the beach were often been overlooked by historians, writers, and film producers. Yet, as Mr. Perret points out, without them, how would any invasion have happened? 1 Mr. Perrett's oral history is comprehensive. He describes his decision to join the Coast Guard and he then delves into the extensive training he received and how he was picked to be the sailor in charge of a landing craft. He also describes, in detail, this craft he sailed through enemy fire during the invasions he took part in. The boat he commanded was the ubiquitous LCVP, or "Landing Craft, Vehicle / Personnel. It was made primarily of wood by the famous company Higgins Industries in New Orleans.

VOLUME 53 - 3 • SEPTEMBER 2008 EDITORSNOTE GLEN USLAN Several weeks ago, I received some disturbing news in my mailbox. It came in the form of an invitation. It seems that I am now eligible to become a member of an organization that has as its sole requirement, my age. Then, upon sharing this news with others, I was told by our very own POC President, that it gets worse. Mr. Bodine informed me that after about six months of membership, I will actually look forward to receiving the most relevant news in my life in their monthly publication! After pondering this notion and contemplating my potential arousal by the idea of “hey, Jamie Lee Curtis is looking pretty good for her age,” I have decided to continue to live in denial. Then I remembered that I have some input on a different publication of an organization that holds much more excitement and interest to me. It is a club that I am actually proud to be a member of. The POC is different things to different people. Ten years ago, it was for me a chance to enjoy my own car in a way that I imagined it was designed and engineered to be enjoyed. Then, it became more about the events themselves. I found that I enjoyed managing the STS and spending my time with the new members almost as much as being on the track. On the Cover: Now, I have Velocity to work on. It feels good. It feels like the right fit for me in the club at this point in my life.

WALKER, SUSAN OVERCASH, M.F.A. With Regards from Frankel City. (2008) Directed by Lee Zacharias. 206 pp. How does landscape influence character? What ties the inner landscape of a character to the world they inhabit? With Regards from Frankel City , a novel told in retrospect by a female character in Frankel City, Texas, explores these questions through the intertwining of relationships, community and setting. Spanning more than thirty years, JoDell Orsak, the narrator, and her unlikely roommate and 1977 Frankel City High School Homecoming Queen, Homily Hope Walpole, seek success, friendship and immortality in small town Texas. With the Colorado River valley serving as both backdrop and character, JoDell and Homily fight for their small-town legacy, their greatest inheritance – to have their stories told for years to come over a glass of tea at the Dixie Dog Diner.
