  • God Hanuman, the Dalits and the Tribals Phd Scholar, TATA Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai Abstract God Hanuman Is a Hindu God Who Has Sacred Meaning
Suraj Punj Journal For Multidisciplinary Research ISSN NO: 2394-2886 God Hanuman, the Dalits and the Tribals Phd Scholar, TATA Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai Abstract God Hanuman is a Hindu God who has sacred meaning. This paper documents how the sacred meaning of Hanuman is challenged to give multiple social, political and economic meanings during an election campaign in India. Such meanings are given for utility. Such practice, the paper argues, is in tune with the tenor of our secularized and post-truth era. Keywords: God, Hanuman, Yogi Adityanath, Symbol, Sacred Introduction Gods like Hanuman are symbols in their own right which have a meaning, like sacredness. Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Chief Priest of the Gorakhnath Math Yogi. Adityanath recently said that Hanuman was a Dalit, a member of the ‘lower caste’. A lot of other important commentators also made references to Hanuman’s caste in response to Yogi’s comments. This paper argues that Yogi’s comment and the ensuing commentary indicates that the meaning of Hanuman’s symbol is changing from religious to political, social and economic. This paper attempts a semiotic analysis of this phenomenon. Herein, Hanuman is a signifier which has a signified (meaning, including sacredness). The signifier is acquiring political, social, economic signified. Such change in the meaning of the sacred symbol of Hanuman is a ‘rupture’ in the meaning of symbol, which is not happening just by accident. Such political, social, economic meanings are given according to the utility of the meaning to the person who is giving meanings to a particular symbol.

Yogi Adityanath’s Background and Rise to Power 1 Yogi Adityanath’s Background and Rise to Power Véronique Bouillier 1 Styled “the Hindu Priest” or “the Hindu Monk,” even “the Fanatic Hindu Monk” by the Press, Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, is a Yogi, specifically a member of the Shaiva sect of the Nath Yogis.1 The Nath Yogis are characterized by the huge earrings that they wear in the thick of the ear, the cartilage being split in the middle, hence their popular name of Kanphata Yogis or Yogis with split ears. But Adityanath’s golden rings are very discrete. 2 Being mahant, i.e. chief of the monastery (math) of Gorakhpur, Adityanath is both the heir to an ancient ascetic tradition dating at least from late sixteenth century, and the present successor of a movement of secularization which started in the 1930s with the powerful and political mahant Digvijaynath (b.1894, mahant 1935-d.1969).

  • Minority Rights and Hindu Nationalism in India
Asian Journal of Law and Society (2021), 8,44–55 doi:10.1017/als.2020.51 RESEARCH ARTICLE Minority Rights and Hindu Nationalism in India Peter van der Veer* Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Gottingen *Corresponding author. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In this paper, I want to focus on some aspects of the political process in India that have an impact on the treatment of religious minorities. Much of the discussion on multicultural jurisdictions deals with differ- entiated citizenship rights that allow religious groups to maintain their normative universe. This literature shows the tensions surrounding individual and group rights. I want to approach the question of religious freedom from a rather different angle. I want to first focus on the protection of bare life in the face of religious violence and then examine the issue of conversion from one religion to another. The issues of human security and conversion are linked in India, since Hindu nationalists see Muslims as forcibly con- verted Hindus who should be reconverted. To highlight the importance of majoritarian nationalism rather than political systems in the treatment of religious minorities, I offer a brief comparison with China. Keywords: minority; nationalism; Hindus; Muslims; violence 1. Introduction The sovereign nation-state has to be the guarantor of religious freedom in the modern period. Multilateral treaties and international organizations may put pressure on nation-states and, in extreme cases, may even intervene, but the nation-state remains the ultimate arbiter of reli- gious freedom. In many societies, the state faces the difficulty that it has to accommodate dif- ferent religious groups, but at the same time has to unify the people into a nation.

LUCKNOW l MONDAY, JANUARY 11, 2021 l Pages 12 l 3.00 RNI NO. UPENG/2020/04393 l Vol 1 l Issue No. 59 MATH OF THE NATH Vishal Srivastav racing the footprints, the role of the Gorakhnath Math in Ram Temple movement, dates back to time im- memorial. It was during the British era in 1935 that Mahant Digvijay Nath of the Math, rolled out the movement for the Temple. Nath’s T tireless efforts resulted in success after 14 years when in 1949, Lord Ram’s idol was consecrated in Ayodhya. Digvijay Nath was present at the Math at that very moment. The reins of the Math were then handed over to Mahant Avaidyanath, who in 1984, formed the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mukti Yagya Samiti, to bring everyone, rooting for Ram Temple, at one platform. In February, 1986, when the court ordered opening of lock of the Babri Masjid, Avaidyanath was pre- sent in Ayodhya. The Ram Temple movement gained a significant momentum when Yogi Adityanath, a fresh gradu- ate, renouncing his family life, became a monk with Nath Panth in 1992. He was a disciple of Ma- hant Avaidyanath. Adityanath soon proved his mettle and further ignited the fire for Ram Temple where it had either been doused or was never erupted. Soon, in 1996, Adityanath was heading the Gorakhnath Math. He held scores of meetings at the Math for Ram Temple. The basic agendas dis- cussed during the meetings were banning cow slaughter, uniform civil code, anti-conversion cam- paigns and so on. In the mid 90s when the Temple movement had reached a tipping point and then began to decline, it was Yogi Adityanath who plugged the holes and held the forte in Eastern Ut- tar Pradesh and never let the fire douse.

An Open Access Journal from The Law Brigade (Publishing) Group 142 ELECTORAL POLITICS AND SECULARISM: LEGAL FACET Written by Debasmita Bhattacharjee* & Carol Elsa Zachariah** * 3rd Year BA LLB Student, School of Law, Christ University ** 3rd Year BA LLB Student, School of Law, Christ University INTRODUCTION A layman perception of secularism will encompass a view of religious coexistence. However, such a narrow thought doesn't suffice the true spirit of the same. As quoted by Shashi Tharoor, the Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, “Western dictionaries define secularism as absence of religion but Indian secularism does not mean that irreligiousness. It means profusion of religions." Mere coexistence is insufficient to indicate if equality persists between the existing religions.1 Thus, secularism might fail to serve the very purpose for which it was introduced into the Indian society: equal protection to all religions. India might have officially declared itself a secular country in the year 1976 when the words secular and socialist were added to the Preamble through the 42nd amendment, but a very careful analysis of the Constitution of India will very well indicate that secularism had always been an innate part of the political ambition of the Drafting Committee. Article 15 under Chapter III of the Constitution of India dictates that no individual will be discriminated by the state on the ground of religions. Other fundamental rights which supplement the efforts in preserving the status of a secular state include articles 16, 17, 25, 26, 27 and 28. In Chapter IV, articles 44 and 46 highlight the state's endeavour to further ensure equality among religions through a mechanism of Uniform Civil Code and through promotion of the economic and 1 Historian Romila Thapar Breaks Down What Secularism Is And Is Not In The Indian Context, YOUTH KI AWAAZ (2018), https://www.youthkiawaaz.com/2015/10/secularism-in-india-romila-thapar/ (last visited May 31, 2018).

Cane Development Department, Moradabad, India DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.290168 ABSTRACT An Earthquake is a natural phenomenon which produces surface waves ultimately causing the vibration of the ground and structures standing on it. Depending on the characteristics of these vibrations the ground may develop cracks, fissures and settlements ultimately resulting ground movement and sometimes proves violent and damages of structures at a very large scale, though earthquake itself is not a disaster. Complete protection of a building due to generation of earthquake waves poses unique challenges in the form of protection of more vertical sensitive non-structural components ,mitigation of total uplift tension demand generated by overturning forces in slender members and shifting or sliding of the superstructure .For the prevention of buildings and other civil engineering structures from the damaging effect of earthquake ground shaking ,base isolation is a widely adopted techniques all over the world. This technique consists of shifting the natural period of the structure to the long period range by placing horizontally flexible isolation devices at the base of the structure to physically decouple it from the ground. This allows the superstructure to remain elastic or nearly elastic following a design level event and minimize the likelihood damage to the civil engineering structures.
