Administration of Barack Obama, 2015 Remarks at a State Dinner Hosted
Administration of Barack Obama, 2015 Remarks at a State Dinner Hosted by President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya in Nairobi, Kenya July 25, 2015 President Kenyatta. Thank you very much, Amina. And I appreciate your sentiments. President Barack Obama, President Mwai Kibaki, our distinguished visitors, distinguished guests: Let me begin once again, as I have said severally since the start of this visit, on behalf of the people of the Republic of Kenya, that we are once again delighted to welcome you to this country and to this city. And I know and strongly believe that you have felt the warmth of our people and, indeed, especially you, President Obama, the tremendous joy at your presence here with us in Nairobi and in Kenya. Welcome and welcome again. Mr. President, this is not your first trip to Kenya. And indeed, we have heard severally, Amina has just mentioned, and you yourself have told us that you have been here. But yesterday you returned riding on the wings of history as a President of historic consequence for America, for Africa, and most importantly, for Kenya. As a world leader who has grappled with great challenges of this age and as a builder of bridges, and to you once again, we say, karibu na sana Kenya. The people of Kenya and the United States share such an abiding love of freedom that we have made grim sacrifices to secure it for our children. We then chose to weave our diverse cultures into a national tapestry of harmonious coexistence. Our paths have not been easy. -

Racializing Affect a Theoretical Proposition
654 Current Anthropology Volume 56, Number 5, October 2015 Racializing Affect A Theoretical Proposition by Ulla D. Berg and Ana Y. Ramos-Zayas Despite the recent boom in scholarly works on affect from a range of disciplines, scant attention has been paid to the intersection of affect and racialization processes, either historically or in contemporary contexts. This paper situates the diachronic articulation of race and affect—particularly in terms of the historical everyday lives and the political, economic, and material contexts of populations from Latin American and Caribbean backgrounds—in anthropological studies of “racialization” and the “affective turn.” Drawing on a broad reading of both scientificandpopularconstructions of affect among Latin American and US Latino populations, we propose the concept of “racialized affect” to account for the contradictions embedded in the study of race and affect, both separately and at their intersections. We highlight what we see as the two cornerstones of our theoretical intervention: on the one hand, a conception of “liable affect” results in a simplified, undermined subjectivity of populations racialized as Other, and, on the other hand, a conception of “empowering affect” perpetuates the privileged and nuanced affective subjectivity frequently reserved for whites in the United States and for self-styled “whitened” elites in Latin America. In recent years, scholars have increasingly used the concept ured prominently in both scholarly discussions of “race” in the of affect to critique the long-held assumption that capital ac- Americas and popular representations of affective expressions cumulation and economic projects inherently conflict with (“Latin people” as hot-blooded being the most salient example). -

Federal Chan- cellor Angela Merkel was accompanied by Federal President Joachim Gauck to lead the triumphant celebrations with the German World Cup champions and the World Cup trophy. National coach Joachim Loew had a bottle of beer in his hand while the players remembered their colleagues, such as the Bender twins, who didn’t make it to the tournament. A photo was taken with the shirt of Marco Reus, then the party began. The German squad and around 35 team staff celebrated heartily at In 2006 they were just “Schweini” and “Poldi” – now they’re Schweinsteiger and Podolski, World Cup Winners (forever). It examines the tension between leader and mass base during the revolutionary process in a sampling of Afro Caribbean, African American, and European modernist texts and how this tension relates to C.L.R. James’s definition of hamartia (tragic flaw), as formulated in his 1938 study The Black Jacobins: Toussaint L’Ouverture and the San Domingo Revolution. James modifies Aristotle’s understanding of hamartia in his Poetics to signify the degeneration of communication between leader and base in the making of modern day Haiti. The dramatic work and criticism of C.L.R. James, Eugene O’Neill, Paul Robeson, Edouard Glissant, and Lorraine Hansberry capitalize on this leader and base tension constitutive of Black radical aesthetic politics and attempt to stage a useful representation of the past, in service of their individual political desires.
