  • Sound Recording in the British Folk Revival: Ideology, Discourse and Practice, 1950–1975
Sound recording in the British folk revival: ideology, discourse and practice, 1950–1975 Matthew Ord Submitted in fulfilment of the degree of PhD International Centre for Music Studies Newcastle University March 2017 Abstract Although recent work in record production studies has advanced scholarly understandings of the contribution of sound recording to musical and social meaning, folk revival scholarship in Britain has yet to benefit from these insights. The revival’s recording practice took in a range of approaches and contexts including radio documentary, commercial studio productions and amateur field recordings. This thesis considers how these practices were mediated by revivalist beliefs and values, how recording was represented in revivalist discourse, and how its semiotic resources were incorporated into multimodal discourses about music, technology and traditional culture. Chapters 1 and 2 consider the role of recording in revivalist constructions of traditional culture and working class communities, contrasting the documentary realism of Topic’s single-mic field recordings with the consciously avant-garde style of the BBC’s Radio Ballads. The remaining three chapters explore how the sound of recorded folk was shaped by a mutually constitutive dialogue with popular music, with recordings constructing traditional performance as an authentic social practice in opposition to an Americanised studio sound equated with commercial/technological mediation. As the discourse of progressive rock elevated recording to an art practice associated with the global counterculture, however, opportunities arose for the incorporation of rock studio techniques in the interpretation of traditional song in the hybrid genre of folk-rock. Changes in studio practice and technical experiments with the semiotics of recorded sound experiments form the subject of the final two chapters.

  • Otis Blackwell: Songwriter to “The King”
Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum • Words & Music • Grades 3-6 Otis Blackwell: Songwriter to “The King” As the songwriter of two of Elvis Presley’s career-making hits, Otis Blackwell will always be linked to the man known as the King of Rock & Roll. But so many artists have recorded Blackwell’s songs that his work reaches far beyond Presley’s shadow. The many hits Blackwell wrote made him one of rock & roll’s most influential songwriters. Born February 16, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York, Blackwell grew up next to a movie theater and developed a passion for Hollywood’s singing cowboys and their western music. “Like the blues, it told a story,” he once said. “But it didn’t have the same restrictive construction. A cowboy song could do anything.” Blackwell began writing songs in his teens, but turned his attention to performing after winning a local talent show. He soon tired of the road, however, choosing instead to focus on songwriting while working a day job pressing clothes at a New York tailor shop. Presley soon followed this success with “All Shook Up,” which Blackwell penned after his publisher shook a bottle of soda and Blackwell’s demo tape of “Don’t Be Cruel” caught the ear of jokingly challenged him to write a song about it. Presley, who was then looking to expand his popularity from the South to the nation as a whole. Taking cues from Blackwell’s vocal Building on his early success, Blackwell continued to write phrasing, Presley turned the song into a 1956 sensation that topped for Presley, and he created a string of hit songs for other the country, R&B, and pop charts alike.

But many other artists gave voice to Blackwell’s work, leaving behind a legacy that reaches far beyond Presley’s shadow. Indeed, Blackwell is considered one of rock & roll’s most influential songwriters. According to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, “Blackwell is without question one of the select songwriters whose songs literally helped redefine America’s popular music in the early and mid-1950s.” Born February 16, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York, Blackwell grew up next to a movie theater and developed a passion for Hollywood’s singing cowboys and their western music. “Like the blues, it told a story,” he once said. “But it didn’t have the same restrictive construction. He soon tired of the road, choosing instead to focus on songwriting while working a day job pressing clothes at a New York tailor shop. Blackwell’s demo tape of “Don’t Be Cruel” caught the ear of Presley, who had just signed with RCA Records in November 1955 and was looking to Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, insisted that Blackwell share expand his southern regional popularity to national stardom. Taking cues writing credit with Presley to increase the artist’s profit—a common from Blackwell’s distinctive vocal phrasing, Presley turned the song into a practice at the time among stars.

  • Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds for Our Purposes, The
"KICK OUT THE JAMS!" Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds For our purposes, the story of Detroit rock & roll begins on September 3, 1948, when a little-known local performer named John Lee Hooker entered United Sound Studios for his first recording session. Rock & roll was still an obscure rhythm & blues catchphrase, certainly not yet a musical genre, and Hooker's career trajectory had been that of the standard-issue bluesman. A native of the Mississippi Delta, he had drifted north for the same reason that eastern Europeans and Kentucky hillbillies, Greeks and Poles and Arabs and Asians and Mexicans had all been migrating toward Michigan in waves for the first half of the 20th Century. "The Motor City it was then, with the factories and everything, and the money was flowing," Hooker told biographer Charles Shaar Murray." All the cars were being built there. Detroit was the city then. Work, work, work, work. Plenty work, good wages, good money at that time."1 He worked many of those factories, Ford and General Motors among them, and at night he plied the craft of the bluesman in bars, social clubs and at house parties. But John Lee Hooker was no ordinary bluesman, and the song he cut at the tail of his first session, "Boogie Chillen," was no ordinary blues. Accompanied only by the stomp of his right foot, his acoustic guitar hammered an insistent pattern, partially based on boogie-woogie piano, that Hooker said he learned from his stepfather back in Mississippi as "country boogie." Informed by the urgency and relentless drive of his Detroit assembly line experiences, John Lee's urban guitar boogie would become a signature color on the rock & roll palette, as readily identifiable as Bo Diddley's beat or Chuck Berry's ringing chords.
