Recursos De La Zona Béntica De La Bahía De Sechura Recursos de la zona bentónica de la bahía de Sechura Recursos de la zona béntica de la bahía de Sechura Resources benthic of the bay of Sechura Juan Tume Ruiz*, Alejandro Ibaceta Cipirán**, Miguel Cortez Oyola***, Joseph Santisteban Atarama**** http://dx.doi.org/10.21503/CienciayDesarrollo.2012.v15i1.02 RESUMEN La bahía de Sechura se ubica en la costa norte del Perú, en las coordenadas 05°18’46” y 05° 50’ 33” de latitud sur, está delimitada por el norte por la Punta Gobernador y Punta Aguja por el sur, y los paralelos 80° 50’ 59” y 81° 04’ 80” de longitud oeste, a 49 km al sur de la ciudad de Piura. La bahía es una de las principales zonas de obtención de recursos pesqueros; pero progresivamente los relaves, los desperdicios de la población, plantas industriales de harina de pescado, de congelado, de con- centrado de fosfato y las exploraciones petroleras con posibilidades de producción la están contaminando. Ello nos ha llevado a identificar las especies bentónicas de cuyo registro existe escasa información. Hemos registrado ciento cinco especies. Palabras clave: Recursos bentósos. ABSTRAC Sechura Bay is located on the northern coast of Peru, at coordinates 05°18’46” and 05°50’33” of south latitude, is bounded on the north by Punta Gobernador and Punta Aguja on the south, and parallels 80°50’59” and 81°04’80” of west longitude, 49 kilometers south of Piura city. The bay is one of the main areas of fishery resources production, but the tailings, the waste of the population, industries such as fishmeal, frozen, concentrate of phosphate and oil exploration with the production possibilities are polluting it gradually. This leads us to identify the benthic species whose registry has limited information. We have regis- tered one hundred and five species. Key words: Benthos resources. EMERSON' INTRODUCTION The present paper continues a study of the Recent marine mollusks collected in west Mexican waters during the course of the expedition. Previous reports considered the family Conidae (Emerson and Old, 1962), the superfamily Cypraeacea (Emerson and Old, 1963a), and the super- families Strombacea, Tonnacea, and Cymatiacea (Emerson and Old, 1963b). The present report treats the gastropod families Harpidae, Vasi- dae, and Volutidae. Specimens were taken by shore and intertidal collecting, by skin div- ing, and by dredging from a small skiff and from the schooner "Puritan." Dredging operations were restricted to depths no greater than 50 fathoms. The itinerary and descriptions of the collecting stations were recorded in the general account of the expedition (Emerson, 1958). The present collection contains three of the four eastern Pacific species that represent the families covered by this paper. Accepted 11-V-2001) Abstract: The mollusks in Manuel Antonio National Park on the central section of the Pacific coast of Costa Rica were studied along thirty-six transects done perpendicular to the shore, and by random sampling of subtidal environments, beaches and mangrove forest. Seventy-four species of mollusks belonging to three classes and 40 families were found: 63 gastropods, 9 bivalves and 2 chitons, during this study in 1995. Of these, 16 species were found only as empty shells (11) or inhabited by hermit crabs (5). Forty-eight species were found at only one locality. Half the species were found at one site, Puerto Escondido. The most diverse habitat was the low rocky intertidal zone. Nodilittorina modesta was present in 34 transects and Nerita scabricosta in 30. Nodilittorina aspera had the highest density of mollusks in the transects. Only four transects did not clustered into the four main groups. The species composition of one cluster of transects is associated with a boulder substrate, while another cluster of transects associates with site.

Abstract: Peru is an ecologically diverse country, with 84 life zones in the Holdridge system and 18 ecological regions (including two marine). 1910 molluscan species have been recorded. The highest number corresponds to the sea: 570 gastropods, 370 bivalves, 36 cephalopods, 34 polyplacoforans, 3 monoplacophorans, 3 scaphopods and 2 aplacophorans (total 1018 species). The most diverse families are Veneridae (57spp.), Muricidae (47spp.), Collumbellidae (40 spp.) and Tellinidae (37 spp.). Biogeographically, 56 % of marine species are Panamic, 11 % Peruvian and the rest occurs in both provinces; 73 marine species are endemic to Peru. Land molluscs include 763 species, 2.54 % of the global estimate and 38 % of the South American esti- mate. The most biodiverse families are Bulimulidae with 424 spp., Clausiliidae with 75 spp. and Systrophiidae with 55 spp. In contrast, only 129 freshwater species have been reported, 35 endemics (mainly hydrobiids with 14 spp. The paper includes an overview of biogeography, ecology, use, history of research efforts and conser- vation; as well as indication of areas and species that are in greater need of study.

D., Adjunct Curator of the Department of Mollusks. In the spring of 1876, Mr. W. J. Fisher, of San Francisco, who had previously, in 1873, been connected as Naturalist with the IT. S. S. Tuscarora Telegraph Sounding Expedition, under Commander George E. Belknap, conceived the idea of chartering or purchasing a small vessel and making an investigation of the shores and islauds of Lower California and the Gulf of California in the interest of natural history. Through the generosity of Mr. Fisher, the greater part of the mollusks collected by him were given to me, and became a part of the Stearns Collection, now incorporated into the greater collection of the IT. S. National Museum. Mr. Fisher's collection, though made, as it will be seen, many years ago, has not heretofore ))een brought to notice. Notwithstanding this lapse of time, its value, through the importance of the information it furnishes on the geographical distribution of most of the species enum- erated, has not been impaired by delay in publication, as no subsequent collector has touched at or visited so many localities around the shores of the Gulf and of Lower California, or if any such collection has been made it has not been made known. Many of the localities have not pre- viously been mentioned, either by collectors or authors. The impor- tance of Mr. Fisher's collection, in its bearing upon the Molhisca of the Tres Marias, is worthy of special mention; it would of itself justify the publication of the list, for it exhibits more fully the mollusk-fauna of this interesting and little-known group of islands, and includes a greater number of species than any and all previous publications.

The species were on sandy and rocky beaches, coastal lagoons, estuaries, mangroves, rocky breakwaters of ports, and shallow subtidal areas (14–47 m depth). A total of 78 bivalve species and 82 gastropod species were recorded. Most of these were associated with sandy and rocky beaches and breakwaters of ports. The estuaries host 30 species and the coastal lagoons only two. In the shallow subtidal there were 18 gastropod species and 40 bivalve species representing 36.3% of all. This study adds 24 bivalve species and 29 gastropod species not recorded in previous studies for a total count of 213 species (102 bivalves and 111 gastropods) for Gulf of Tehuantepec.
