So many advances have changed the methods of key generation for autos. 20 years ago, if you made a key for a car, you either used try-out keys, impressioned the lock,or for most cars, removed one or more locks to make the key. For those just starting in automotive, you’ll never realize the joy of pulling a door panel on a Saturn, BMW or Mercedes to make a key, for that method is no longer a necessity. Many tools have came along in the past 10 years or so, E-Z Readers, Kobra Readers, Accureaders, and Determinators, and all are great tools, but none have revolutionized car key generation like the Lishi. When Mr.Li, the inventor of the tool, made these tools, he hit a grand slam with automotive locksmiths. Jobs that used to take an hour often can be done now in less than 10 minutes. Sometimes, I get it done so fast that I’ll actually kill some time straightening the truck so that the customer doesn’t complain about the price versus the time spent on site. I made keys for an 02 Pontiac Grand Am last week, and my usual method is to use the A-1 PS3 in dash ignition removal kit (another great tool), but I had dropped the jig for drilling the hole in the face of the cylinder into the dash of an Impala and wasn’t able to retrieve it, and had forgotten to order a new jig. I used the GM-39 Lishi to get cuts 3-9 in the door, cut the door key to check the correctness of the cuts, progressioned the 10th cut in the trunk, and then ran a code fill program to determine the first 2 cuts. There were 3 possibilities and the 2nd key worked the ignition, and I was still done in less than 15 minutes! A customer brought an ignition into my shop from an 1985 Nissan truck to have a key made. My usual method would have been to impression this, but instead I tried the NSN-11 Lishi for Nissan and picked the ignition over, read the cuts, and had a key made in less than 5 minutes.
