Lifehouse STEP IT UP! CONGRATULATIONS lifehouse serving people with developmental disabilities since 1954 AUGUST 2018 | NO. 38 STEP IT UP! As part of our mission here at Lifehouse to increase the quality of life for our residents, we aim to integrate health and wellness living skills in our programs. On June 4th, with the help of Filice Insurance as our sponsor, we launched the pilot run of a new Resident Wellness Program. Equipped with Fitbit trackers, four Lifehouse residents, Bomun, Anne, Patti and Kasie embarked on an eight week wellness challenge. Badges could be earned every week for walking 1,000- 10,000 steps in a day as well as walking 3,000 steps or more for multiple days in a row. Each resident sets individualized goals for themselves. Anne was determined to hit 4,000 steps a day, and Bomun was determined to increase the length of his daily hikes each week. As a whole, each of the residents were inspired to lead more well balanced and healthy lifestyles. In the end, Kasie came out victorious by logging 190,489 steps and earning 43 badges! Go Kasie! Her warm smile and BY Jennifer Waight upbeat personality are contagious, which has made her a well-known fixture in the Lifehouse community for the last nine years. The Independent Living Program is perfect for Stephanie KWAME since it lends to her enthusiasm for getting out and about in the community. She is a social media maven and selfie-artist. Collecting scores of photos along the way Meet Kwame- He has been with Lifehouse for for her next great post, she enjoys going to the beach, the last eleven years. He is in the Independent JULIA the movies, and local events such as the Marin County Fair. Living Program and lives at Laurel House. Kwame especially enjoys budgeting his money and has a goal to land a job this summer. At Laurel House, all of the roommates take turns cooking throughout the week. Back in 1971, prog(ish)-rock band The Who were planning a rock opera movie with Universal Studios called Lifehouse as a follow-up to Tommy . It never happened. Abandoned as a rock opera in favour of the album Who's Next , its songs would appear on various albums and singles by the Who, as well as Pete Townshend' s solo albums, including Behind Blue Eyes, Won't Get Fooled Again, and Baba O'Riley . Fifty years later, it is fully coming to fruition as a graphic novel with Heavy Metal Magazine . And may even get back on the screen as a result. Lifehouse will be published in July 2020, as a 150-page graphic novel based on Pete Townshend 's screenplay and music, written and drawn by Little Nemo's James Harvey, set in a dystopian world that relates to today's themes of politics, global warming, and technological reliance. In liner notes at the time, Townshend described it, "a fantasy set at a time when rock 'n' roll didn't exist. The world was completely collapsing and the only experience that anybody ever had was through test tubes. In a way they lived as if they were in television programmes. Everything was programmed. The enemies were people who gave us entertainment intravenously, and the heroes were savages who'd kept rock 'n' roll as a primitive force and had gone to live with it in the woods.

    Class, Youth, and Dirty Jobs: the working-class and post-war Britain in Pete Townshend’s Quadrophenia This chapter examines Pete Townshend’s Quadrophenia (1973) and the way in which it depicts continuity and change in the lives of the British working-class in the period that the album documents (1964/5), the political milieu in which it was written (1972/3), and the legacy of the concept that was depicted in the screen version directed by Franc Roddam (1978/9).1 Quadrophenia was recorded and released in a fraught period of industrial militancy in Britain that had not been witnessed since the general strike of 1926.2 The album can be ‘read’ as both a social history of an element of youth culture in the mid-1960s, but also a reflection on contemporary anxieties relating to youth, class, race, and national identity in the period 1972/3.3 Similarly, the cinematic version of Quadrophenia was conceived and directed in 1978/9 in the months prior to and after Margaret Thatcher was swept to power, ushering in a long period of Conservative politics that economically, socially, and culturally reshaped British society.4 Quadrophenia is a significant historical source for ‘reading’ these pivotal years and providing a sense of how musicians and writers were both reflecting and dramatizing a sense of ‘crisis’, ‘continuity’, and ‘change’ in working-class Britain.5 Along with the novels and films of the English ‘new wave’ and contemporary sociological examinations of working-class communities and youth culture, Quadrophenia represents a classic slice of ‘social realism’, social history, and political commentary.

We have been stepping up our game in terms of incorporating recreational activities into our services and programs. You may have read from last year’s newsletter that we received a generous grant of $10,000 from the Marin County Parks’ Breathe!/!Respira! Program for the agency to use for one year. The goal of this fund is to encourage Aunderserved populations to use and access county parks throughout Marin. With this grant in hand, we have been assisting people in our programs to participate in park outings that enable them to have fun, enjoy nature, and socialize with each other and the wider community. Lifehouse Program Managers and Assistant Managers have been busy planning lots of fun activities in different parks, each with a theme. Last October, we had a Pier Fishing trip at Paradise Beach Park in Tiburon, which quickly became a favorite for the people we serve. The excursion was made even more special by a park ranger and local anglers teaching them secrets and tricks of the trade when fishing from a pier.
