Skiing in New South Wales
SKIING IN NEW SOUTH WALES Located within Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains, NSW’s four snow resorts – Perisher, Thredbo, Charlotte Pass and Selwyn Snow Resort – each has their own style and personality. The resorts have invested heavily in recent years to extend the Winter snow and make sure skiers and boarders have optimal conditions. All-inclusive deals that bundle accommodation with transport, lift passes and equipment hire are a great way to stretch your dollar. The season generally begins on the June long weekend (the second weekend of the month), with loads of fun events planned throughout the weekend. Now is the time to start planning your Winter holiday – all you have to do is decide where to go. PERISHER The largest ski resort in the southern hemisphere, Perisher covers more than 12 square kilometres across seven peaks and four distinct resort areas – Perisher Valley, Blue Cow, Smiggin Holes and Guthega. It’s great for all ages and abilities with more than 1,200 hectares of skiable terrain, hundreds of runs, 100km of cross country trails, 47 lifts, five terrain parks and two halfpipes. 240 Current as at 8 February 2019 snow cannons ensure there’s a coating of fresh powder for the whole season. The large resort village has lots of places to eat and drink, and other restaurants are spread across the mountains. Once the lifts have closed for the day, there are plenty of welcoming bars and clubs. EDUCATION RESOURCE TEACHER’S NOTES 1/7 teacher’s notes This is an education resource catering for the curriculum needs of students at Year 7 through 12, across New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria. The following snap- shots show the Australian Alps as an effective focus for study. • The alpine and sub-alpine terrain in Australia is extremely small, unique and highly valued as a water supply as well as for its environmental, cultural, historic and recrea- tional significance. • Most of the Australian Alps lie within national parks with state and federal governments working cooperatively to manage these reserves as one bio-geographical area. • Climate, landforms and soils vary as altitude increases and so create a variety of envi- ronments where different plants grow together in communities. These in turn provide habitats for a wide range of wildlife. Many of these plants and animals are found nowhere else in the world and some are considered threatened or endangered. • The Alps reflect a history of diverse uses and connections including Aboriginal occupation, European exploration, grazing, mining, timber saw milling, water harvesting, conservation, recreation and tourism. Retaining links with this past is an important part of managing the region. -

The wintertime (May–October) precipitation across south-eastern Australia, and the Snowy Mountains, was studied for 22 years (1995–2016) to explore the sensitivity of the relationships between six established climate indices and the precipitation to the orography, both regionally and locally in high-elevation areas. The high-elevation (above 1100 m) precipitation records were provided by an independent network of rain gauges maintained by Snowy Hydro Ltd. These observations were compared with the Australian Water Availability Project (AWAP) precipitation analysis, a commonly used gridded nationwide product. As the AWAP analysis does not incorporate any high-elevation sites, it is unable to capture local orographic precipitation processes. The analysis demonstrates that the alpine precipitation over the Snowy Mountains responds differently to the indices than the AWAP precipitation. In particular, the alpine precipitation is found to be most sensitive to the position of the subtropical ridge and less sensitive to a number of other climate indices tested. -

In exoplanet studies the age and mass of a planet are known only as well as the age and mass of the hosting star, mass transfer in intermediate mass binary systems lead to type Ia Su- pernova that provide the strictest constraints on the rate of the universe’s acceleration, and massive stars with low metallicity and rapid rotation are a favored progenitor for the most luminous events in the universe, long duration gamma ray bursts. Given this universal role, it is unfortunate that our understanding of stellar astrophysics is severely limited by poorly determined basic stellar properties - effective temperatures are in most cases still assigned by blunt spectral type classifications and luminosities are calculated based on poorly known distances. Moreover, second order effects such as rapid rotation and metallicity are ignored in general. Unless more sophisticated techniques are developed to properly determine funda- mental stellar properties, advances in stellar astrophysics will stagnate and inhibit progress in all areas of astrophysics. Fortunately, over the next decade there are a number of observa- tional initiatives that have the potential to transform stellar astrophysics to a high-precision science. Ultra-precise space-based photometry from CoRoT (2007+) and Kepler (2009+) will provide stellar seismology for the structure and mass determination of single stars. -

Controversies over the name of Mount Kosciuszko Andrzej Kozek 2020-03-26 The story we are going to tell is about visibility of the highest peak of the continental Australia, Mt Kosciuszko (2228 m), from all directions around because this is the key to understanding where all the troubles with naming of the mountain came from. The tourism industry is another factor. Tourism Industry in Australia became an important component of Australian economy. In the year to June 2019, there were over 8.5 million international visitors in Australia, an increase of 3% from 2018. Tourism contributed 8.0% of Australia's total export earnings in 2010-11. Australian Alps with the highest Australian continental peak, Mt Kosciuszko belong to the icons attracting tourists [1,2]. Often over 1000 tourists visit Mt Kosciuszko on summer weekend days. Clearly the walk from Thredbo is the most popular one. Chair lifting over 560 m to level 1930 m [3], then a comfortable walk 5 km over elevated steel mesh way to Rawson Pass (2124 m) with ecological toilets brings you to the final 1.5 km on a maintained road to the top of Australia. The metal walkways have been built in the 1980’s. What a cute description of the walk has been found on the internet. Climbing Mount Kosciuszko is worth doing. It is pleasant. It is easy. It is hugely enjoyable. And, when you have done it, you can bask in the glory that once you stood on the highest point between the Andes and the East African Plateau. -
