  • •2011 CJFL Record Book Special:2007 Record Book
…Introduction This edition of our Record Book includes some new material and recent research. First, we had an opportunity to obtain the original game sheets from former PJFC Chief Statistician Darly Slade. These sheets are from 1976 to 1982 and provide us with a hugh catalogue of lost information. Included in the Prairie papers were copies of weekly stats releases from the BC, Manitoba and Ontario Conferences. In particular there was a 1978 letter from former OFC Chief Statistician Lloyd Norton regarding the suspension of the Etobicoke-Lakeshore Bears by President Paul Teolis. In researching this matter we also found that Scarboro Rams ceased operations for the season some 10 days later and that both teams were missing in previous OFC final standings. This has been updated. Also, we have learned from Paul Shortt that the 1978 BC league had similar issues in 1978. North Shore Cougars failed to field a team and Vancouver Blue Bombers folded after just two games. More detailed information can be found in the 1978 Milestone section. Secondly, more newspaper articles became available for the Eastern teams of 1904 to 1913, the Manitoba juniors of 1912 & 1913, the Western Groups of the 1927 Jr ORFU, as well as the 1949 and 1970 Jr ORFU. These team standings have been update. New research information on the actual organization structure of both the ORFU and the QRFU have required us to refer to them as the Junior ORFU or QRFU per say rather than the ORFU- QRFU Juniors. The Eastern team standings are updated on this change.

  • Weekend Magazine Collection Finding Aid
Weekend Magazine Collection Finding Aid Explanation of the series: The groups identified in the trakker circulation system were created to imitate the manner the Weekend Magazine stored its photo library. The collection is essentially chronological, following the numbering system of the dockets. To find the most material from a particular date, it would be advisable to look into multiple series, as the same story is sometimes repeated in different series. Each original docket is stamped with the format (IE “colour” and/or “safety”) indicating whether material can be found elsewhere. However, as the note for Group 2 indicates, much of the safety material is simply a copy of the original colour item. Group 1 consists of small original dockets that originally held one black and white negative that was used in publication (and on occasion a few “outs”). Group 1 material was photographs that were originally taken on black and white film, in various formats and sizes. It includes nitrate, safety and a very small quantity of diacetate. The first 10 pages of this finding aid are also located, with more contextual information, in the other Weekend Magazine finding aid, which concentrates on The Standard. Group 2 consists of photographs that were originally taken on colour transparency film. The series also includes black and white material as well: these images are all copies of what was originally a colour transparency. The magazine’s policy was to make b&w reproductions of photographs taken by freelancers and it appears that many original colour items taken by staff were also copied onto black and white (mainly safety) stock.

…Introduction This year we are introducing Coaches records, something that we are sure you will find interesting and informative. Special thanks to Daryl Slade, former PJFC chief statistician and his coaches list 1976-81 and several newspaper articles. Barry Kowalski of the Edmonton Wildcats, Jim Stevenson and Paul Shortt for providing coaches records from their respective conferences. Apologies to Queen’s University II. Further research has found that there was an Ontario junior championship game played Nov 7, 1891. In spite of Hamilton not wanting to make the long train trip, the game was played with Queen’s winning 13-10 over the junior Tigers. Queens also scored the first safety touch. Apologies to “Billy” McDonald, Montréal AAA III. His 5 singles in the Quebec junior championship on Nov 17, 1894 was a then junior record. Apologies to Harvey Evel, Hamilton Tigers II. His 12 singles on October 24, 1903 is a still standing playoff record. Apologies to Ridley College Tigers. In their 80-4 win on November 6, 1915 the 14 touchdowns scored in this game was the second most in junior history and the 12 by rushing equaled the junior record. James Wallace Alexander scores 33 points, the third most in junior history. Apologies to Paul Robertson, Westmount II Rugby Club. His 8 converts in the Quebec championship on Nov 22, 1913 is a junior record. Apologies to Fred Payne, Westmount II Rugby Club. His 3 rushing touchdowns in the Quebec championship on Nov 22, 1913 was third most. Apologies to Stanley Booth, Grand Trunk Boat Club. Research has found that during the 1920 season he kicked a then record of 24 singles.

  • 2010 CJFL Record Book
…Introduction Once again this edition of the CJFL Record Book includes the latest research from both Paul Shortt and myself. In the team standing Paul Shortt has found scores and team standing from the Quebec Junior Union of 1900-1901 as well as between the wars. There was a junior cham- pionship played in Quebec as far back as 1898. As well, I have found a four team junior football league in Ottawa in the same year. There was an article in a Toronto paper questioning why not in Toronto as there were several teams able to form a junior section of the ORFU. We have been able to obtain Ottawa and Montreal junior scores before the First World War and thus team standings. We also researched that other junior league east of Montreal, the Nova Scotia Junior Canadian Football League 1956-58 and found many points of interest. As well, several prairie junior unions between the wars now have complete team standings. We have revisited the scoring of the 1915 University of Toronto Schools, particularly the 81-2 score over St. Thomas juniors on October 30th. Through additional Toronto newspapers I found the school scored 13 trys, 6 rouges, 1 field goal and 7 converts. Of that total, a player, only identified as B. Garrett scored 5 rushing trys as well as all the kicking points for a total of 41. I wrote to UTS if they might have records that far back. I received an email from Ms. Jennifer Orazietti, Alumni Affairs Officer of the school. She had to dig into the archives of students records and found that the only person attending the school by that name was a Beverley Noble Garrett, who entered UTS in September 1912.

  • Widger, to the Point of Suggesting He's the Second Best Outside Linebacker in the World
Widge r: No- 2 andtrying harder High tributes have been paid to Mike Widger, to the pOint of suggesting he's the second best outside linebacker in the world. It's enough to make a guy go into showbusiness. Widger "bumps" Ottawa's Tom 'Pullen, a Illegal move this season. Jack Gotta was playing host to the media mob after a tough game between the Ottawa Rough Riders and the Alouettes a couple of years ago . There was nothing of his torical significance crossing lips until Gotta, in that sedous way he had, mentioned that he had spot ted a flaw in Milke Widger. This may not have been his torical but it was certainly signifi cant. Mike Widger, All East-now, later to be AU-Canadian line backer, with a flaw? What flaw, Mr. Gotta? Let's hear more about this. Does he cave in under triple cov erage? Do his feet get tangled when he crosses over to another zone? Let's hear it Jocko! "Well, it's not really much," hedged Jocko as he does when he goes into hiscon act. The mob was alert, as it closed in on the scoop, eyes gleaming, ears pointing and pencils poised, urging him to con tinue. " It's something I never noticed before," admitted Gotta as he fixed his audience with that wide-eyed, honour-bright stare that usually precedes a hearty guffaw, " but today it suddenly struck me that once in about every two or three years, Widger plays a bad game." 48 He has the pass-coverage against the tight ends.
