About Workshop

The workshop OTSIP-2016 to be held in the Department of Mathematics, IIT Roorkee, is focused to disseminate knowledge and share basic and innovative ideas about the use of optimization methods for solving the industrial problems. The classical and numerical methods of optimization will be described by the subject experts and practitioners. The successful applications of soft computing approach to deal with the optimization problems of real world industrial problems for obtaining the best possible solution under unavoidable constraints will be explained.

About Department of Mathematics, IIT Roorkee

The Department of Mathematics attained its present status of an independent department in 1960. Growing steadily, today the department not only teaches various topics in mathematics to undergraduate and postgraduate students of different engineering and science departments, but also runs its own M.Sc. Courses in Mathematics. The Department also offers facilities for research work leading to Ph.D. degree in different branches of Pure & Applied Mathematics, Operations Research and Statistics.

Objective

The objective of the workshop is to provide a platform for the participants to learn and share the knowledge through the lecture delivered by the eminent speakers and discussions with the practitioners. The participants will not only exposed to traditional theoretical developments and natured inspired techniques in the field of optimization but also learn about the practical applications of optimization techniques in diverse areas. Both theories and practices of optimization techniques will be covered during the course of the workshop. Who can apply?

This workshop will be suitable to B.Tech. students, postgraduate students, research scholars, early career faculty members from any discipline of sciences & engineering who are interested in the applications of optimization techniques in real world problems.

The registration fee for different categories is as follows:  Rs 500/- for Students & Research Scholars  Rs 1000/- for faculty members and Corporate  50% of fee is exempted for Students & Research Scholars of IIT Roorkee  70% of fee is exempted for members of Mathematical Colloquium, IIT Roorkee. For the outstation participants accommodation will be arranged in the campus guest house/hostels on payment basis.

Speakers & Course Contents

The faculty members from IIT Roorkee and other premier institutes, will delivered the lectures on various optimization techniques with an objective to make participants confident in solving the real time optimization problems involved in industry. A poster session will be arranged to bring the participants from different areas together so that the inputs/insights from everybody are shared to identify the real life optimization problems. The use of MATLAB software to solve the optimization problems will be demonstrated. The topics to be covered are as follows:  Classical non-linear programming methods  Search and gradient based numerical techniques for optimization  Nature inspired optimization techniques: Genetic algorithm (GA) & Particle swarm optimization (PSO)  Multi-objective optimization problems using PSO: Application in manufacturing systems  Implementation of classical and natured inspired optimization techniques using MATLAB.
